Royal Albatross ~ QT Watches Parent Feeding Chick! Sees YRK & Runs To Her! Gets BIG Mouthful 8.27.22

QT sees one of the Bluff Track parents - either YK or YKO come in and feed its chick and watches and hopes that she will get a smoothie too! QT heads up the track and looks out over the water and then she sees Mom flying in at 5:57. She runs all the way down the track to get back to her nest wheeing with excitement over Mom bringing lunch! YRK comes down the hill and does a beautiful skycall greeting as QT is begging and bill tapping for her smoothie.
Be sure to watch at 9:55 as YRK gives QT a huge chunk of squid/octopus! QT quickly swallows it and asks for more but YRK was finished with that mouthful and she walks towards the nest. QT follows her but YRK takes off over the water in a beautiful departure. Short but effective feeding by YRK. YRK has been in 6 out of the past 7 days! Now that is pretty amazing!👍💕🌷🍀 Thank you for watching!

I watched this on the live cam and was so happy and thrilled when QT quickly ran to Mama YRK who brought her long awaited smoothie. Watching QT run up that steep hill was possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Well except for the fuzzy gray arctic owlets poking around the tundra, she’s the 2nd cutest thing in the universe. It’s been a fruitful time lately for Lady Hawk uploads. Thanks again, LH! 🦉🦅🐣💙💛💜😻🪶🐣

Hi Nurse Julie! I believe that foraging for food at sea is instinctual. Albies are soaring the skies at speeds of up to 70 mph, searching the waters for food. They breed in colonies but at sea they are loners, in that it's every bird for itself. No sharing of food as a deliberate act. I just recently read that in 2019 there was a series on TV, "Seven Worlds One Planet", hosted by David Attenborough, where the chick fell out of the nest and when the parent showed up to feed it, it refused to do so, in spite of the chick's calling out, because it was not in the nest. He concluded that they don't recognize their chick by sight, sound or smell, but, rather by the nest location. When the chick was back in the nest, feedings continued as normal. It apparently caused an internet storm as viewers were distressed. That's all I know about that, at this moment. But, the way they live at sea is not conducive to family type associations. Mated pairs join for life but don't see each other during the year, as a rule. They meet on land in the nesting colony location during the mating season, to mate and raise their one chick, every other year. They will see each other in passing as they come in to feed their chick and may sit with each other and alopreen, etc., while visiting their chick. I hope this helps, some. TC Be blessed! 😻

QT: There’s my Momma! There’s my Momma!! Mum! I knew you’d come back! Wait for me! Im on my way back!! 💨💨💨 Love seeing QT spot her Momma and runs fast to her, she loves her Mum! So glad YRK is a dedicated Mum and keep visiting her everyday especially now before she fledges! 💞 I will miss her wheeing sounds..the only time albies makes this sound is to their parents. Even they grow up, the wheeing is the baby voice to their parents. QT loves her parents. 💞

QTs mom has the most beautiful skycalls. I love the way they do a little preliminary “meet and greet” a few feet from each other rather than just rushing headlong towards each other. It’s amazes me that birds have essentially no sense of smell yet can find family members simply by sight and sound. Especially in a huge colony where everyone looks identical!

💖 I must say that the less sleep I get, the more QT seems like a kid in an Albie costume. Lol! 🤣 She is so adorable ❤ and animated that it's hard to believe we are looking at a bird. Her personality is bigger than I ever thought a bird could be. If she lifted up a little lacy dress from both sides, with the tips of her wings, and spun around in a circle and bounced off my screen, danced around the room with the gulls singing in the background, I would think I was in a Disney movie. ❤ She makes me feel 5 years old! 🥰 TYLH! 😻 What an incredible delight!!💕

Hi Donna, They don't! It takes two parents to raise one chick. You can see by this one short feeding that mom brought chunks of fish, today. The dad is missing and the Rangers 💕 will, at times, supp feed QT with 10+ fish at one feeding. She wouldn't survive without their help. The process is very strenuous on the parents. Incubating alone in some cases can cause the parent to lose weight. They only have 1 chick every other year. I hope this helps! Have a great day! God bless! 😻
