The picture you used for the 12 year old isn’t one of the yearly release ones but their Feis bottle released in 2022.

This release left a lot to be desired, I was quite disappointed. 43% seems way too light, I was in a hurry to grab a good bottle to share with a childhood friend while visiting and this is what I ended up with. I was hoping this would have been cask strength. *It certainly was not a bad purchase, still a very good release*

Erik: I appreciate the background info. that you provide in your videos. Everything you said about Sherry/Jerez seems correct, but in addition to Palomino and Pedro Ximenez (pr. Himeneth) grape varieties, another often encountered from Jerez D.O. (pr. Hereth) is Moscatel (muscat)--e.g. Lustau produce the excellent Moscatel Emilin Sherry. Moscatel grapes are raisined (on mats/straw) prior to fermentation, like with PX, but it has a greater natural acidity than PX and so is more pleasant to drink as a (still very) sweet wine. Liquid fruit-cake (Xmas) rather than the syrup of a PX sherry.

I learned how to pronounce Spanish while working on the USA/Mexican border back in the late 1990's which is different than Spanish in Spain. Mexico City talks more Spain but not the border towns. I studied sherry preparing for the Certified Sommelier exam (CMS) and while going through the WSET Diploma program. @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Thank you very much for that link to your series on sherries and sherry cask whiskies. I'm about 1/3 through so far and there's a tremendous amount of fascinating and very useful information, all presented in a very accessible/clear way. You are an excellent communicator. I don't have any of your qualifications but my interest in wine also preceded my interest in whisky, and I find it strange to sometimes encounter people who like the range of tastes in whiskies but who aren't also intrigued by or interested in the range of tastes in wines. Their choice/loss. A non-whisky aside, sorry: like you I absolutely love Palo Cortado, particularly Barbadillo's Obispo Gascon, i.e. ~20 years old sherry--I could be wrong but they don't seem to use VOS on their labelling? Sadly, an alcohol tax change made in my country (New Zealand) probably ~20+ years ago, aimed at stopping teens drinking RTDs, effectively killed "fortified wines" as a category here. That was an "unintended consequence" but there was seemingly no will to ever "fix" it, and also little effect upon RTDs/their social harms. I know sherry was seriously underpriced in the 1980s and 1990s, which damaged the industry there, but the tax change was used as an excuse to double+ the price of everything sherry/port, here, so people just stopped buying it--i.e. retailers/distributors went far further than the effect of the tax change should have amounted to. Palo Cortado is a fantastic accompaniment with roast/baked (glazed) ham, which some seem to think is difficult to wine-match.

Very nice review, glad it's a rich one. I never had much interest in this bottle. Seems expensive for a 43%. I think I'm going to crack open the Laphroaig Cairdeas PX. Did you ever do a review on this?

Though I’m not a peat guy I do enjoy the 16 year. But it’s at the top of my peat tolerance. And if I’m going to drink it it’s the only thing I’m drinking that day as my palate is shot after drinking it. Big scotch fan but I’m more of a speyside drinker. But always single malt. Blended scotch is what I drink on vacation out of the country it’s cheaper and they always have JW black. Nice review. Enjoy!!

You never know.... one of these days the peat will get you and you'll be hooked. The next thing you know you'll be buying the Ardbeg 10 Year old!

I hear you... Try a Kilkerran 12 or something like that. I was pleasently surprised. Very slightly peated but more sweat ash than burnt tires.

Now that it's definitely younger than 15 years of age as their last age statement one dropped from the original 16, what do you think this one is around? I have tried it and kinda liked it but I have not compared it head to head with the 16 year old DE. Cheers Erik, great video as always!

It is and it is difficult to tell as the smoke and intensity of a PX cask would mask its age fairly well. That being said, it has NO youthful notes so I'd say 12-16 would be a good bet.

Bummed that they dropped the age statement from this one, only reason to do that would be because they want to mask the fact it's not as old as it once was 😥

I prefer the 11yr and the 12yr because of the natural color and flavors.

I prefer the 12 CS but if I had to choose between the Lagavulin 16 and DE I'd take the Ardbeg 10.

Lagavulin Distillers Edition is great with brownies. BTW Lagavulin D.E. is a 10yr old whisky.

I can't believe they removed the distillation and bottling dates from the distillers edition. Coupled with it's weak specs, it's no longer worth the price imo.
