Not a copy of Ella or Chaka, but a fresh and new groove to this epic piece! Wow, what a voice and presence!

A long time ago in the forties Dizzy and bird gave us this song They called it "a night in Tunisia" And the melody still lingers on It was new and very strange Blew the squares right off the stage Few could play along But the melody still lingers on Max and miles to name just two Together they grew The music was young and strong And the melody still lingers on They paved the way for generations From Coltrane to Stevie No one could stop the winds of change Without them where'd we be? The duke and the pres were there before The past you can't ignore The torch is lit, we'll keep the flame And the melody remains the same The duke and the pres were there before The past you can't ignore The torch is lit, we'll keep the flame And the melody remains the same A long time ago in the forties Dizzy and bird gave us this song They called it "a night in Tunisia" And the melody still lingers on In the forties A night in Tunisia In the forties A night in Tunisia In the forties A night in Tunisia In the forties

I'm in awe. I actually clicked this video to make fun and anticipating I would be saying "oh, please, she has nothing on Chaka" but how wrong was I! I'm obsessed by this song, and have been working my way through dozens of Chaka performances, I didn't think anyone would come close. This woman REALLY does. I am a new fan.

LMAO. My sentiments exactly. She killed it and is absolutely amazing. Still have to give the edge to Chaka though :)

The moon is the same moon above you Aglow with its cool evening light But shining at night, in Tunisia Never does it shine so bright The stars are aglow in the heavens But only the wise understand That shining at night in Tunisia They guide you through the desert sand Words fail, to tell a tale Too exotic to be told Each night's a deeper night In a world, ages old The cares of the day seem to vanish The ending of day brings release Each wonderful night in Tunisia Where the nights are filled with peace

That is a very difficult piece to get right. Never heard of her til now which is a great shame and perhaps testimony to how fantastic singers don't get the wider publicity they deserve. Props to the band and to the sharp backing singers too.

WOW!! Ein HOCH an alle zusammen - absolut coole Version!!!

She's from Florida I think. She moved to Sweden some years ago and we collectively fell in love with her (easy to do, she's not just good looking but also charming) and she became pretty well known here since she toured extensively with a show called Rhapsody in Rock, that is pretty big in Sweden. I think this clip is from one of those tours.

@paddeyOmalley Most of that is just from the epidemic of auto-tune in most music today. When you hear a real live singer its just not possible to get that kindn of exactness. At least in the first half (where I'm at so far) she has pretty great pitch.

You are right about Chaka Khan making it possible to sing it this way. Which version one prefers is another issue. Didn't really hear the pitch problems last time I listened to this but then again I might have been fooled by LaGaylia's looks.

I know I'm way late here. But yes, those were written by Arif Mardin and Chaka Khan. Lagaylia's singing those lyrics here, with her own flourishes and some vamps built upon the original Chaka/Arif Mardin arrangements, which themselves based off Dizzy's, Frank Papareli original composition.
