Using Lagrange multipliers is often a convenient method for finding the maximum (or minimum) of a function subject to constraints.

Thanks so much! It is definitely my goal to build a relatively complete resource that students can use for a stat mech approach to PChem. I'm not sure my teaching is anything too out of the ordinary, but I'm glad you appreciate it.

Excellent! I think many students don't really understand the big picture behind the method of Lagrange multipliers when they first learn it.
