I thought I'd tell you that this game is the result of a collaboration between Konami and the Japanese gaming magazine, Famimaga, short for Family Computer Magazine. This collab was called the Game Koubou. The magazine polled readers for input about various elements, including the title, plot details, monster designs, and even NPC dialogue. This development process was similar to that of Megaman Legends 3, except Lagrange Point was not cancelled. Also, Akio Dobashi and Noriyuki Takahashi, of the 80's Japanese rock band REBECCA, contributed to a couple of tracks for the game.

Aeon Genesis (Gideon Zhi) serious legend in the translation community. He translated Metal Max, that makes him a hero to me. Possibly my favourite rpg series of all time.Glad you gave him props, as a few channels playing fanslations don't :) good vid.

Beat this game not too long ago. I really liked it. Pros: Large playable cast with their own strengths and weaknesses (whether it be in stats, equippable weapons, or skills), decent story, excellent music, nice enemy designs, entertaining/satisfying boss fights. Cons: High encounter rate, lots of grinding, weapon fusion is hard to take full advantage of without a guide. My score: 4 out of 5 stars.

When you said "Phantasy Star" you had me sold on playing this. I am totally putting this on my list of RPGs to play and beat for 2015. Thanks for the video on this awesome gem of a game!

Mang, those colors and graphics in that game are pretty darn good for Famicom! They're SMS class! VRC7 mapper is one a helluva chip.

And a big thumbs up for what you said about the people who take their personal time to translate these games for us to play. If any of you see this, thank you.

I'm a huge fan of this game-- I think the music is top notch. It gets a lot of attention in Japanese books/articles about video game music because of how unique and advanced it was for the Famicom/Famicom era. One thing I love about playing older games on the original hardware is getting to hear the sound being produced by the hardware!

Gotta love sci-fi RPGs. This definitely would have been awesome back in the day. I wonder what it would take to create a repro cart of this, given that there was a whole other sound chip required - if that chip is even able to be reproduced/emulated or even bought somewhere - in any event it would probably be a lot more expensive repro cart than most.

Looks great and still looks very playable. It's amazing how much potential was in the late 8-bit days. Sci-fi fantasy theme sounds very interesting. (Love how you can drive a car in the over-world) Nice!

I've been a huge fan of Aeon Genesis for over 10 years. I'm glad that they finally translated Tactics Ogre, even though it's basically the PlayStation text. I'll definitely be checking this out! Also, the main character in Lagrange Point kinda reminds me of Mag Launcher, from Evolution:The World of Sacred Device.

This just shows how Phantasy Star on Master System was ahead of it's time. Still this game is one of those forgotten gems. Too bad it never got a global release.

Konami was always doing things to enhance the sound in their games with the various MMC chips for the Famicom or Sound Cartridges for the MSX. Old School Konami was the best!

I came across this game a few months back, and was disappointed when I saw that the translation wasn't being worked on anymore. I'm really glad that Aeon Genesis picked up on it again and finished it. I can't wait to play this later tonight. I would wait until a repro could be made, but I doubt one could be made, knowing that it uses a VRC7 chip. But that's fine.

Then you need to make the sound expansion mod on your NES, but I think it is not likely that this will gonna go for NES carts, because making a VRC7 board is not that easy.

***** bro back in the 80's and 90's, Yamaha played a HUGE role in video games in the sound department with their FM Synthesis chips, which is found in: -Lagrange Point (of course) -MSX/MSX2 -Sega Mark III (Japanese Sega Master System, which Lagrange Point's chip is supposedly a variant) -Arcade games -Sega Genesis -Sharp X68000

That VRC7 chip is what's called a "Memory Mapper Chip" or MMC, and it's probably one of the main reasons why the game wasn't brought over to the west. This is one of the key differences between the Famicom and the NES: The Famicom hardware will allow the game cartridge to augment the sound chip, whereas the NES does not. Now in some cases they can work around this; for example the VRC6 chip that was used in Akumajo Densetsu was replaced by a mapper called the MM5 when it was brought over as Castlevania 3. The MM5 is essentially a VRC6 without the sound-enhancing components and the VRC7 is basically a VRC6 + 1 more sound channel. Like you said though, JRPGs weren't especially popular in the west at the time, and the work required to make it run on an NES probably couldn't be justified on Konami's end.

This is a longshot but... Does anyone have any save state files they could send me? I was playing this on an actual Famicom cart with a reprogrammed English eprom, but my save file got erased :( I was at the part where you first get to Center City after draining the waterway in Land 2. I'd like to try and continue via emulator from roughly where I left off...

Let me polietly say, that this game was a disaster to translate it. Almost every single fucking tileset has been compsressed in the ROM, so it needed a reverse enginnering, to recode the whole text compression method. No wonder that it needed almost 10 years to make this, but by the time this patch was released I knew every ins and outs of this game, because of a japanese dictionary.

It's funny how you made a video about this game when i just found out about it trough this video right here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXzIp3hjlLpnnZI It's part of a 6 part documentary about the history of videogame music from japan from the beginning right to the 32 bit era, if you haven't please check it out Johnny i'm sure you'll absolutely love it. You have the likes of Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage) and Yoko Shimomura (Street fighter II) telling telling their stories.
