I've been taking Lexapro for 8 years. It was the first (and only) anti-depressant/anti-anxiety I have been on. I started at 46 years old. Before that, I just accepted the nature of being depressed, anxious and sensitive most of the time. I agree with Andrew that it's more like "taking a supplement" than taking a party drug. There is no noticeable high, stimulation or sedation. My personal analogy is that it is like wearing a raincoat. It keeps you dry when it's raining. If you are feeling wet all the time... maybe it would help. I also would like to say that it doesn't seem to affect my motivation level in one direction or the other. It does mute emotions somewhat, but in a mostly helpful way. I also agree with Andrew that given the benefits and the minimal negative effects, it's best to stay on an anti-depressant if they are helping and you are prone to depression / anxiety / melancholy. Going off them is usually not a winning move.

When I was 24 years old back in 2004 I was diagnosed with stage four squamous cell carcinoma cancer. It hit me hard. I beat the cancer. But the massive doses of radiation treatments messed my body all up. I also had a right radical neck disectomy surgery. The tumor was on my tongue so the cut half my tongue off. I had a stomach tube installed because I couldn’t eat or drink anything because of the severe burns in my mouth and throat from the radiation. I was so depressed. I didn’t have a girlfriend. But I had my family. But I was still very depressed. Especially when I had to give up my career welding at the shipyard. I still get depressed because now that I’m disabled I will never be able to afford to do what I wanted to in my life. I live in Maine. I can’t even afford to put a small home on an acre of land for Christ sakes. What you said about the monks in China really made me think. Maybe I shouldn’t let certain things depress me anymore. I mean I’m 42 years old. I should just be happy I’m alive pain or no pain. Sorry for the blabbering but thank you for being so honest. I really enjoyed this video. You said it right at the beginning, “everyone has their own problems.” But the part of it being cliche is not true, it is actually the opposite. People like to hear about these things because the way society is today most people are not vulnerable or lack the ability to openly express their shadow. People like to hear about other people’s sufferings because we can relate to them and it brings diction to what one may not be able to form for their selves.

thank you for talking about this. i'm 24 years old with a great life, in grad school now, partying, happy but still suffer through anxiety and depression. i am an extremely extroverted person that everyone knows due to being 6'8 and a former athlete but no one ever expects me to deal with anxiety and/or depression. for no reason i had extremely horrible anxiety attacks from ages 19-23 where I thought i was going to die early and constantly felt panicked and would shake at night, unable to sleep and so confused why I felt like the world was going to end and i would die. i literally had times where I was thinking about my funeral and who would show up. i began lexapro 10mg and didn't feel much of a difference at all, went up to 20mg lexapro and it changed my life. for the past 9 months, my anxiety has almost completely been eliminated and my depression has lessened but still exists. the main side effect i've seen is feeling tired CONSTANTLY. even going to bed by midnight, i sleep in til 1pm usually and feel so exhausted. a few nights in the past month, i've slept in til 4-5pm and felt like I could keep sleeping. exhausted all the time but it's better than anxiety attacks. i hope you can get through anything in your life, especially mental health wise. lexapro did help me completely but still i often feel so lazy and unproductive and am currently trying to get my life together. best of luck brother

Hey Andrew, I share a lot of your struggles...this issue is a constant endeavor to deal with and treat. The most helpful thing I've found beyond the common sense things and medication has been taking on the general mindset of trying new things. Like, getting out of your head by putting yourself in a new environment or literally just occupying your time with something other than the " script". That beats down rumination. Depression convinces us that we will never be happy and that all is lost and anxiety convinces us that there is a million things to fear...which are both not reality. Your honesty about this topic helps people, probably more than you can imagine.

@@wackey2k10 brother I wouldn’t wait I’d invest in a juicer ASAP Masticating one if you can cause it doesn’t heat up the juice Celery is very cheap Make sure it’s organic tho Has to be organic cause celery has high water content and absorbs pesticides in concentrated amounts The theory is it build up stomach acid Helps to assimilate nutrients As well as direct minerals jump starting your brain via gut It’s sounds crayz and honestly stupid and esoteric believe me I know I resisted trying for a long time despite advice from others cause of how too good to be true woo woo it sounded but immediately you’ll notice a difference prob within an a couple of hours Has to be fresh organic and unpasteurized aka raw celery juice You’ll feel more in your body within the day

I used to like your videos for your content, but Im liking them now even more because of YOU. You’re real, humble and unpretentious just talking about you and the difficulties you’re facing. We can all relate in some way, we all have these conversations with ourselves, but never really get to hear these personal conversations from another person. You have amazing interview skills and have loved your past interviews with other people. Your recent videos are like you are interviewing yourself with your great skills and giving deep honest responses. I’m pulling for you! We care about you and wish you the best!

Those monks accomplish so much... by challenging them selves to explore their own minds thoughts and body...Have you ever forced yourself to literally count every second of 1000 breaths.... without letting yourself get distracted? That's... an accomplishment... We shouldnt seek accomplishment however.. They don't... they seek fulfillment. Started meds at 16... was lucky enough to be able to come off them at 22ish.... Things change... don't think any one thing is forever.

He could try to find a medicine man or woman who will lead him on an ayahuasca or DMT jorney. Or in california I believe their are therapies that allow you to be guided through a mushroom or MDMA experience to heal trauma. Nobody is anxious and depressed on accident or by chance, there is always(sometimes even tucked away and forgotten) trauma from childhood that causes us to be in our head instead of living our fullest life. Im so glad you at the same age as I am now got off of meds. Natural medicines can do so much more, and breath work/meditation can also take you into new levels of peace. I know the monks didnt use entheogens, but there breath work may have been used to naturally produce the effects of DMT in the brain. Sometimes in western society you would be wasting your time just trying to sit down and meditate when your mind is filled with stagnant negative energies. Ayahuasca and DMT give us who have been robbed of innocence and unsure where to begin healing a chance to experience relief from the inauthentic self that carries with it extreme hurt and doubt. I think that plant medicine would be the best thing he could do to have a change of energy even if its just for a week after that the depression is gone, It creates a time that allows him to discover himself after the euphoric feelings are gone.

I think that some of the issue with people not getting the whole "chemical imbalance" thing is that we abstract our feelings and emotions into something etherial, almost. When you read about how SSRI's work, it makes more sense. Your body releases serotonin into your brain. Serotonin is the hormone which regulates feelings of happiness and well-being... without it you simply cannot experience those emotions properly. SSRI's just inhibit the reuptake (removal) of serotonin from the brain. I was reluctant to "get medicated" for a number of reasons but now that I've been on SSRI's for a number of years I can undoubtedly say that they benefit my life hugely.
