I remember going to one of your sets with my girlfriend and she was not used to this fast type of mixing (hot cue mixing). She said "this guy is all business, cut the records as fast as you can and no thanks for coming out at the end of the set".

Great advice. Something I noticed Luke do about a decade ago was mix during the during the build and jump to the 2nd drop of a track. A lot of DJs never realize that the 2nd drop a lot of times is more powerful and more energetic than the first one, plus if you are mixing fast, The outro beats come up and gives you another opportunity to mix in the next track on the fly. I definitely incorporated that into my own mixing style. Blessings Luke!

100% but sometimes is better to use the first drop bcz theres the break and depending on the song you can start a different song with an acapella for example

That's why I have all my cue points set. Always try to prepare track's even if just playing on the fly.

I have a method that I haven't seen anyone do yet, but it's usually common if you are DJing music you created yourself. When you're DJing only the music you produce, you have the advantage of having of all the stems. That means you have the freedom to group all stems into 4 parts: Drums, Bass, Melodic/Harmonic, and Vocals (and additional group is fx or transitions, but I'm gonna keep it simple for now, and make a full tutorial on this). This means you can rearrange, and Mashup, and have full control of how you mix everything by adding or taking out parts, without having to use EQs. Now, you can apply this to other music you didn't make. There is software that usually splits a song into those 4 parts. If you do this method, it's a bit tedious for a long set to split all music you have into those 4 parts, but the freedom it allows for mixing is unmatched!

I want to add to this because I actually tend to mix out the chorus all the time: IMO If you're going to, for example, mix out the chorus to My Humps - Black Eyed Peas, you really need to follow up with a song that people are also going to enjoy (Temperature - Sean Paul, Fireworks - Katy Perry as examples).

Luke! thanks for your video tutorials! You explain to me the most understandable and simple language! I would really like to know how do you put together your performance playlist? Can you please tell us about the dramaturgy of your DJ set? It would be cool if you took apart one of your DJ sets!

Can you make a video about how to beat mach be ear genres that are not in 4/4 ? I tried to beat mach dubstep and I couldn't, but is easy for me to do that with techno or EDM because the beat is more constant, so could be great to give us some tips.👍👍👍🎧

I tend to play around with looping parts of a track and play them on top of the actual track, whenever there’s room for it. Ofc the energy has to match. Even better if the key matches too. As you once said, it’s like juggling 😃 p.s; for fast mixing, I actually prefer matching the energy levels, instead of topping it. That way it’s more smooth to me. / More of a journey vibe, if you will. I also don’t fast mix throughout my entire set. I switch back to slower pace mixing once the crowd can’t breath anymore, lol

If you are not supposed to mix during chorus, then how do you do it? Let chorus play ( while tracks are beatmatched) then switch over to chorus? Or stop track 1 at end of chorus and start next track?

How reliable is the DJing on a Phone? I'm still a bit skeptical, so it would be interesting to know.

Luke did the whole of Creamfields festival on his phone for 1.5 hrs. So very reliable. I think it helps to have a dedicated phone / tablet for this purpose and in airplane mode so no notifications come through etc.

@@dj_paultuk7052 Oh absolutely, I would never want to relly on a Phone that might also have other things running in the Background. Although he did mention that he Streams music sometimes, so he is just setting his Phone to do not desturb, and not on airplane mode.

For open format: best vocal verse then chorus then I'm out. No one cares about that second verse that nobody knows..... When I mix progressive- I finish the transition when the melody finishes its progression (takes longer than open format).
