Laika Animated Film Characters: Good to Evil
For the most part, stop-motion animation is a medium that’s both admired and
underrated. With most major studios sticking with either hand drawn animation or CGI
animation, Aardman was pretty much the biggest (and practically only) name in town
when it came to clay. But this all changed in 2009, when the studio LAIKA made its
grand debut. Since then, LAIKA has released five films, each of them being acclaimed
and adored by thousands. Whether it's their films’ darker themes, their amazing
attention to detail, their incredible animation techniques or their loveable characters,
people just love LAIKA. In honor of this great studio, we’re going to look at each of their
movies and see just which of their clay-creations are the most pure and which are the
most evil.

I agree that The Beldam is the most evil, but I wouldn’t say she “loves” her victims. Given that after consuming the kids, she locks their souls away and takes their eyes away, thus preventing them from moving to the afterlife, Beldam is practically sentencing these innocent kids to eternal suffering. Coraline could’ve ended up in that fate too. The “love” thing is all just an act to make the kids fall for her trap.

You can't forget about The Cat from Coraline! He was helpful towards Coraline for a brief moment telling her about the other universe she was in, and even attacking the other mother so Coraline could get back to her normal world!🖤💙

Also the other father is a very underrated hero tbh. He tried warning coraline of the dangers of the other world in cryptic ways to stop the other mother catching on and he also gave her the first ghost eye

If I had to do a list for Coraline itself, I would rank them as follows from good to evil: 1. Other Wybie and Other Father: since both of them sacrificed themselves to help Coraline out in the end 2. Charlie: he works hard to support his family, cooks for them, and also tries to keep a playful attitude with Coraline despite being clearly stressed 3. Bobinski: he's quite friendly towards Coraline, and considering he has the medal showing he assisted with cleanup for Chernobyl, he's clearly got a good heart 4. Wybie: he's kind of weird by stalking Coraline, but he doesn't seem to be malicious in any way, just doesn't know how to talk to people properly 5. Coraline: she's a bit bratty at the start, but it seems to mostly be from stress about the move. She stepped up to save everybody in the end anyways 6. Spink: incredibly polite towards Coraline, and overall a good person who will help when she can 7. Mel: she's dismissive at the beginning, but I firmly believe it's only due to the deadline, the move, and her having her neck broken from hitting a truck. She really did try to make it up to Coraline 8. Dead Children: while they give Coraline good warnings, there's still the fact that they abandoned their real parents for the Beldam, their level of willingness is debatable though 9. Cat: he's snarky, rude, dismissive, but still decides to side with Coraline and helps her win 10. Mrs. Lovat: she's bossy and controlling over Wybie, but it is due to genuine concern. There's also the fact she let Coraline's family move in, despite knowing something was wrong, but it's debatable on why she let it happen 11. Forcible: she's forceful, brash, loves to argue, and prideful. She's not evil, but she could still manage to be a little nicer. There's a huge jump in morality from here on out 12. Dog Bats: they're definitely evil, but they didn't try and attack Coraline until she provoked them 13. Other Spink/Forcible: same as above, except they definitely had more of a conscious decision to attack rather than being an animal instinct that the bats had 14. Other Bobinski/Rats: they match here since they're technically the same creature, but they both work to screw over Coraline 15. Beldam: shocker. She's easily one of the most evil villains in any film due to her manipulative, cruel, and deceitful nature towards children. To be honest, Coraline is a movie that has a feeling of Coraline being alone, but there's quite a lot of characters in it

@@charliezard64man55 I'll try to stick with different characters for each medal, because most of them would probably go to the beldam: Sloth: the cat: a very lazy guy, he usually does the bare minimum to help, with his character arc showing him becoming much more active and helping out more Envy: Ms Forcible: kind of a stretch, but she seems to always want to be the spotlight over Spink, having to prove that she's just as good at Spink at tea reading, and prove she's prettier by knocking Spink down Pride: Mr Bobinksi: he already knows he's amazing, need I say more? Wrath: the beldam: obviously, she straight up kills other Wybie for him saving Coraline Greed: the rats: kind of a stretch, but they clearly horde tons of cheese to themselves in the other attic Gluttony: Coraline: she's frequently shown wanting more and more, and is one of the few characters that eats. And she eats a lot, considering she's constantly given feasts. It's not until the final game Coraline stops being gluttonous since she doesn't eat the food anymore and becomes content with what she has. Lust: the ghost kids: not lust in the sexual sense, but lust as in a super powerful desire and longing to the point of self destruction or destruction of others. Which we see, their desire to be loved was so strong they gave up their eyes

Attention, definitely. As for aid, the owner is Phil Knight, the billionaire co-founder of Nike. After Kubo flopped, he invested over $100 million into Missing Link, which was an even bigger flop-the worst in the studios history. But still, all their movies got great reviews. Even now, Laika is still working on Wildwood, set for a 2023 release. I'd say they have enough funding, but if Wildwood flops financially, they may not see another production being greenlit, even if Knight can afford it.

Ah yes Samus Aran, admittedly one of my first crushes and not physicals, looking back more made me like her a lot more. Despite a traumatising past or the scary harsh situations she's in, Samus Aran still keeps a headstrong and will powered attitude in eliminating those hostilities from harming/corrupting other life forms. From what I could remember she's quite the badass good heroine in my book. :)

In my opinion, I think Kubo and Boxtrolls are pretty underrated. They deserve more attention. Coraline already has the fanbase it deserves and gets the most attention. It's a pretty good movie tho. The same with paranorman and corpse bride. I didnt watch the Missing Link, so I can't really say anything about it.

My opinions on Laika Films Paranorman - Actually pretty wholesome. Coraline - My childhood. Kubo - I cried. I love it so much. Box Trolls - The villain is terrifying and the trolls are wholesome. Missing Link - No opinion. I have not watched it yet.

Yeah what I think a lot of people don’t realize is that Laika films are actually pretty wholesome and creepy. But the wholesome out-ways the creepy by the end. Paranorman is my favorite because it made me laugh and cry in a short-span, but Kubo is really good as well.

The beldam/other mother is of course the gold med of evil because of how she takes children’s eyes by luring them with things they wanted. After she takes their eyes she replaced them with buttons and eats them. She claims she “loves” coraline but just wants to live forever by abduction and murder. She was so desperate for coraline that after coraline locks the door the beldam screams “DONT LEAVE ME. DONT LEAVE ME. ILL DIE WITHOUT YOU”. She is a messed up villain in many ways

The other mother's "hand" is actually her true form so she can create illusions at will and the well coraline throws the key in looks like the tunnel coraline uses to get to the other world because it's the same thing that's why there was a circle of mushrooms around the lid to the well it's to keep the other mother inside so it's called a fairy circle and she's still in the other world but limbo SO THE OTHER MOTHER ONE she wanted coraline to accept her which she did when the movie ends

Looks like Archibald Snatcher and Other Mother (aka Beldam) are rightfully ranked as Laika's 2 pure evils But I think Norman should be on top given his pure good status

Kubo was just approved as pure good. I think he can stay where he is. But it could definitely be argued Norman deserves a higher ranking, as he also saved an entire town from a supernatural threat, whom they redeemed rather than killing them (or, in Norman's case, putting to sleep). In fact, I can see an argument to rank Norman above Kubo because everyone in town saw Norman as a weirdo, whereas Kubo, while just as sympathetic, lived in a village where people viewed his powers as something cool.
