Lake Anna Seaplane Splash-In 2017

This is some of what I saw and did at the 2017 Lake Anna splash-in. It's all seaplanes and seaplane people and flying--no music, no frills, no foolin' around. You'll see most of the seaplanes that were there, but I may have missed a few. I missed filming at least half of the attendees, too--sorry!
Seaplanes present include three Seareys, two Seabees, a Twin Bee, a Legend Cub, a Maule, a C-185, two Lake amphibians, and--well, I think that's all.
And the venue--well, watch the video and see for yourself. It's very nice. The location is Lake Anna, in central Virginia.

Where is this beautiful place ? Loved the SeaRay formation. The only annoying point is that stupid announcement : “water landing, O.K.”

Ha! It’s meant to be annoying-because if you don’t pay attention to the landing gear position you can have a very bad day. That’s so for all airplanes with retractable gear, but even more so for amphibious seaplanes because you have to make the correct decision for three of the four landing gear situations-water takeoffs, land takeoffs, water landings, and land landings. Land takeoff is the one you can’t get wrong. Water landing is the most critical: Get it wrong and you’ll probably go swimming and may well drown before you can get out of the inverted submerged airplane. You’d think it would be a no-brainer to get the gear right every time; but it isn’t. EVERYthing else is a distraction. Almost all seaplane fatalities are drownings. So I love that noxious Landing Gear Lady. The lake is in central Virginia.

Great video!!!! So, is it safe to say that you can land an amphibious aircraft legally on Lake Anna, VA? My friend has a lake house there and I would sure like to fly my ultralight (w/ pontoons) from PA? But I could not find any information about any such restrictions that may apply to Lake Anna. I looked online for more information and came across your video. Hence, my question.

Yes, Lake Anna is open to seaplanes. (If you're a Seaplane Pilots Association member, check the Water Landing Directory for info about many waterways in the USA. Use the app or point a browser to www.seaplanemembers.com/waterway/ ) The lake can get congested on summer weekends, but every part of is is open.

Nice to see the old Ryan SeaBees still flying. N713ET is a beauty. Love that paint job. They were very popular when I was a kid in the 1940s.

I have a question. At the beginning when you were setting up to land. You were asked what type of landing. I’m confused if the is a system thing or just someone on the radio asking. This is a fun video. My son and I watch it in bed before he goes to sleep. I bet I’ve seen it 100 times.

Great question, Mike. The questioner is a robot in my Searey whose job is to keep me from an unplanned swim--that is, to help me be sure that I have the landing gear in the right position for the landing surface. For landing on water the wheels must be up. If they're not, the airplane will probably flip upside down. Getting that right ought to be easy; but it's THE most common serious mistake made in amphibians. There are four opportunities to have the landing gear in the wrong position--takeoffs and landings on water and land--so you really have to think about it and get it right. I'm glad you and your son are enjoying the video. Thanks for mentioning it! Lots of seaplane pilots enjoy taking people for rides. If that interests you, just ask around at airports in your area and maybe you'll find one.

I notice you don't use a normal yoke on seaplanes, what do you call the instrument you pilot seaplanes with please (I'm still learning)..??

It all depends on the seaplane. It can have either a stick or a yoke. It makes no difference to whether you're flying a seaplane or not. Most of the larger seaplanes have yokes.

wow, just amazing. Thank you for sharing this. We don't have freshwater lakes like this in Australia so the amount of seaplanes we have on the whole continent wouldn't match what you have in one state. What an amazing life style you guys have.

Australia probably has about the same number of seaplane pilots per capita as the US has. A lot of them fly Seareys like mine--including Michael Smith, who flew his all the way around the earth a couple of years ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXnXeHeEr8-Xr6M
