Where is Bafa lake? How was Lake Bafa formed? What are the places to visit around Lake Bafa? What is the history of Lake Bafa? Where to stay in Bafa lake? All these questions are in my mind, I am setting off from Marmaris on my motorcycle towards Bafa Lake. There are 9-10 thousand-year-old rock paintings in the Beşparmak Mountains at the target. It is as old as Anatolian history.
We are staying in a pension called Selenes Pension with a wonderful view of Bafa Lake. We get up early in the morning and set out for rock paintings. We continue on the road accompanied by the view of Beşparmak Mountains and Latmos Mountains. We are staying in Kapıkırı village. Our first stop on the way is Gölyaka village, which has a wonderful view.
We do trekking and climbing among interesting rock formations. It takes 1.5-2 hours to reach the rock paintings. The first rock paintings were made 6-7 thousand years ago. We enter a place similar to the cave in the Dark series. What we saw is incredible. There are animal figures made of root dyes on the rock walls. Their full-hipped figures symbolize fertility and the cult of the mother goddess abounds in ancient Anatolian beliefs. Cybele is one of them. Perhaps the cult of Cybele emerged from a belief here. Who knows. Archaeologists say the dancing human figures in the cave may represent spring festivities, wedding festivities, or rites of passage for men or women. These are the paintings made by the first civilizations in Anatolia. We can call it the first transition to agricultural society.
A German archaeologist, Dr. Anneliese Peschlow discovers this place. It is very difficult to find this place without a guide. She describes the Carian Way for a while, but then there are no directions. We are reaching a new peak in climbing. Even Didim can be seen from here. We continue towards a monastery at the foot of the Latmos Mountains. Along the way, you can see the spikes thrown by hundreds of spiny hedgehogs. It is also possible to use them as buckles. Locals eat prickly hedgehogs and say it tastes like lamb. Friends are afraid that the spiny hedgehog will shoot arrows. Everywhere is full of arrows. We reach the monastery. There are frescoes inside a helmet-like rock at the entrance of the monastery.
The ascension of Jesus to heaven, the resurrection of Lazarus, the crucifixion of Jesus are depicted. The faces of the paintings have been scraped by vandals. Grave diggers also destroyed this archaeological site around Lake Bafa. Yediler Monastery was built like a castle at a height that can see everywhere. Yediler Monastery was also used as a writing workshop in the 12th century. Yediler Monastery is probably related to the 7 sleepers story in Christianity. There is a magnificent view of Bafa lake and didim from Yediler Monastery. Even the Temple of Athena by the Bafa Lake is visible.
That's it for now at Bafa Lake in Aydın's Söke District. See you in a new travel documentary and travel vlog.
