It was a very small dam, maybe ten feet tall, basically an earthen dam reinforced with wood and stone, holding back a six foot deep reservoir. It's in such a remote location, that it was only inspected every ten years or so, because its failure was considered such a low hazard.

The same thing happened at Lake Delton in Wisconsin Dells. The dam broke taking houses near the damn for a ride down the Wisconsin River. Lake Delton was completely empty except for a small stream flowing down the middle of it. The bottom was packed with decades of silt. I walked out on it and got stuck waist deep in the muck. Was lucky to crawl out of it, but covered head to toe looking and smelling like I took a dip in a septic tank. I wasn’t the only one though. Saw several others crawling too.

How about looking into repairing or even better replacing hundred year old anything. You don't live in hundred year old house without repairs. Your body won't last a hundred years without repairs. Spend some money to help Americans first.
So they knew about it but didn't put the time into fix it, I feel people in charge of these Forest Services should either get more help or actually do some improvement projects. Thankfully the Dam was more like a beaver dam so not too much damage from the new flow

I was told those Earthin' Dams were built during the Great Depression, part of the Government Work Programs to get people "working". The Dams were built, I wasn't told what the Dams were made with, BUT the Counties were to Budget $ $ $ for FUTURE improvements/ replacements. These Dams were supposed to last about 25 YEARS NOT to last 75 to 100 YEARS!

One small low lying area was flooded several years :) So, the COUNTY decided to move an old, narrow, cement bridge to where the flood waters went into area farmer's fields so they can't plant crops. It wasn't more than a YEAR {chuckling}, the small "brook" decided to MOVE BACK. . .to it's original place where it had been for hundreds of years. :) :) :) BOY! Was the COUNTY Father's "M A D"! ! ! The farmer's effected could "tile" their low lying fields and they'd be "fine" IF THE "BROOK" DECIDES TO MOVE AGAIN :) :) :)

So instead of doing an engineering study on this dam and realizing that it is unstable, they decided to ignore the problem and push it on a different government body. I guarantee you that nobody will ever claim full responsibility here.
@thurgoodstubbs96703 ай бұрын
People commenting about how crappy the dam is / was and they fail to notice the dam hasn’t failed yet. The electric company dropped the ball here in my opinion. When heavy rains come dam operators need to open the flood gates to release the excess water. This dam held and the excess water had to go somewhere so it went around the dam. The people that lost structures should sue or be compensated for the power companies ignorance. This didn’t have to happen at all.
