I'm so glad you touched base on Kayak safety in big lakes. Had a horrific experience with the young bloke late last December on Waranga basin. Have fished it for 4-5 years from my boat but was my very first time in a Kayak. Planned well, checked the forecasts, lifejackets on and bought my phone. We were only 20 mtrs from the Harrimans point boat ramp when the wind picked up and pushed us out to about 30-40 mtrs, Young bloke had a bit of trouble coming in so i paddled out to him to get him to hold onto my kayak so I could get us both back to shore. One thing led to another, very long story. We ended up both capsizing. Loosing both paddles, his kayak, an eski, my rod and everything else on board. Kicked like Ian Thorpe for a good 15 minutes trying to get back to shore before i started really struggling and had to pull my life vest to inflate and watched helplessly as were dragged away from the shore by the undercurrent & wind. After screaming out for help for 5 minutes, was clear no one coming when i remembered I packed my phone, in it's Lifeproof case. Hanging on to the side of our Kayak as the whitecap waves picked up to well over half meter, we finally got onto the police. I remember telling the young bloke to keep spitting the water out as the waves hit the kayak at went over our heads (that plays in my mind often) after what seemed like forever the police asked me how much % I had left on my phone, it was 17% or 27%. Cant remember, but wasnt much, The scariest point was when the lady on the phone said "we are hanging up now, you going to need all the battery for your light for when the Rescue Helicopter comes later tonight". then we were on our own.. i reckon it was around 7.00pm at this point. An hour and a half after I first called the police we were finally rescued by a bloke on a Jetski who was directed by police on where we were. We had been swept out 1.5Ks from the shore, and got in just on sunset to a sight of ambulances, police & SES crews.. I was sure I was a dead man for a good hour or so there but wasn't giving up on my young fella and was mighty embarrassed when I got back to shore. Since this day I have very strict rules, After all I wouldnt be here had i not followed them. 1: Tell someone where you are going. 2: Wear a lifejacket, A bloody good one. Even wear it when you don't have to. 3: Take a charged & waterproofed phone. I still haven't been on a Kayak since, my hands got sweaty and my heart raced when I seen you on it. At the end of the day, it was down to mine and my young blokes inexperience on Kayaks. But also goes to show, you really need to plan for when it does go wrong. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway. Happy fishing!

WOW, thank you so much for sharing this with me. I'm so glad you you two are both OK. I was actually at Harrimans Point this morning. I drove over with my kayak, but I wasn't liking the wind so I didn't even launch it, I just bank fished instead. I've seen that Lake go from calm to chaotic in a matter of minutes. I have a lot of kayaking experience, and am very confident, but I am also smart enough to know that just because I have taken it, doesn't mean I ha e to use it. The lake will still be there next time. Stay safe buddy and thanks so much for sharing your story.

Hey Robbie DPI in NSW and Victorian fisheries would strongly prefer that red fin weren’t returned to the water. They are classed as a noxious pest. Also removing them decreases the population so the ones left don’t get stunted due to over population.
@robbiefishing3 жыл бұрын
Really? WOW. There's literally thousands of redfin being harvested from that Lake each week. And that's no exaggeration. Some people are taking over 200 EACH. Then, all of the big trout and yellowbellynrhst are being gutted are full of small redfin. I saw a photo of a trout that had over 30 small redfin in its stomach. Do you really think that me throwing ba k a few will make a difference? LOL
@jimatsydney3 жыл бұрын
@@robbiefishing I love your videos and think they are great for freshwater angling. Thank you. You are right the release of a dozen or so fish wouldn’t make a difference however, whether you know it or not you are an influencer. What you show and say on camera has a thousand fold effect than just releasing a couple of fish. I’m just saying what the fishery management bodies recommend. Redfin are noxious and do massive damage. There are heavy penalties for possession of live Redfin. The reason there are so many small ones around is that they breed in still water like dams and produce a toxic egg string that nothing eats. Without predation they quickly overpopulate and stunt along with other species that eat the same food. I saw it once in Eildon where the average fish size was about 10 cm. Stocking with natives and Trout is the only way to bring any numbers back to these species once Redfin are around. Maybe the big trout and yellow belly that ate the Redfin should have been released instead.
