If you're looking for something to do with the kids these coming school holidays, they will LOVE doing this. I was doing this over 30 years ago when I was a kid and remember how much I loved it. (And still do). With kids it doesn't matter how big the fish are, as long as they are catching fish and as long as the fish wiggles you won't stop the kids from smiling. Make sure you pack sunscreen and a hat.

We're encouraged not to throw them back in many waters in Tasmania ...Considered an invasive species but actually eaten fresh they are one of the nicer fresh water fish ...Some would argue that trout are too and have decimated the grayling , blackfish and such native fish but they are more an introduced species . Grayling and blackfish are still around after 156 years since trout came along and all the famous southern hemisphere trout including the monsters from N.Z. are originally from the 1864 Tasmanian hatch that were introduced to the Plenty River and nearby other local rivers initially and have provided anglers from all over the world with so much ..Sometimes introduced things are not so bad ..

Robbie, Are Redfin are an invasive species in Aus? If yes, why do you put them back?
@robbiefishing3 жыл бұрын
They are invasive in some places. In this lake they are food for the massive yellowbelly and even the large trout, and they provide hours of enjoyment for many anglers. Also, in a lake that holds over 3 million megalitres, I am certain that anglers have zero chance of effecting redfin numbers by killing them, which means that I would be killing something in vein and that is something that I can not do. I can kill them to eat them, or feed the pelican, or even use a crayfish bait, but I can not just kill them for absolutely no reason.
@padsmm3 жыл бұрын
@@robbiefishing excuse my ignorance about freshwater rules..... but is it illegal to have live redfin in possession? I reckon they'd be awesome in an aquarium!!
@robbiefishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, In Vic and NSW it is illegal to be in possession of live redfin. You can put them back into the water in which you caught them, but if you want to keep one you must kill it. That law is to stop people relocating them from one waterway to another. If you want one as a pet my advice would be to call fisheries and ask them how to go about keeping one as a pet. I know a lot of people keep them, including tackle stores and I have heard stories of people getting a permit.

@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie, I was not having a pop at you for culling or not culling them, I just wondered if all invasive fish had to be culled. I've seen some of your Carp videos and wondered why the different treatment for Redfin... I keep RedFin and Carp in my garden pond and as a schooling pack hunter, as seen in todays video, I would have thought Redfin would do more damage to the native predatory fish population, Yellow Belly, Murrey Cod etc... because they directly compete and will eat native fish. They can be very agressive when feeding and will have a go at most things that they can get in their mouth...lol. Keep the videos coming mate... I particularily like your small stream trout stuff. So when you need to add more line to the reel , don't you find that where you joined the new to the old , the knot messes up your casting and you cast the same distance just the same ?
@robbiefishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mohammed, I find is messes with my casting, which is why I always take the old line off first. I don't use backing. Most of these light spinning reels can usually hold about half a spool of 4lb Maxima Ultragreen. A spool is about $16, so it costs me around $8 to fill up a reel with no knots and that usually lasts me quite a long time. This current spool that is on there now has been there for around 14 months.... and I've done a LOT of fishing in that time. LOL
