The nation's largest reservoir is at only 37% of its capacity. That water flows downstream to customers in Nevada, Arizona and California, all of which face potential delivery cutbacks. Ben Tracy reports.
Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

Agreed, there is not enough forward-thinking by wise people in our government, we could have gradually solve this problem without great expense over time but no one looked this far forward. Even though water shortage has been a major problem with Southern California for a hundred years. Those who are in the know saw this coming a long time ago. But there has been no political will to solve problems. Politics has been mainly about getting power and keeping power not really doing any work involved with solving problems. This is an interstate issue that federal government needs to get involved. Perhaps by redirecting large tax breaks to the rich, instead of going into space maybe we need to look to our basic needs of the near and far reaching future . Where is the government we need to help us with solving these interstate problems?

My Pappy & I were both born in St George, UT. Shortage of water out west has always been a problem. Water usage in St George was always regulated. I was with him in 1972 when we went out to Nevada to bury his father. We stopped by a gully with a trickle of water running along the bottom. Pappy explained that that was the Virgin River! And even back then he was worried that St George was gaining a large influx of retirees from other states. He wondered where the water was going to come from to sustain them. While we were in St George, we stayed with some of his friends, who had a house right on the edge of town. Their yard had a lawn, which had to be watered daily. Where the lawn stopped, the desert began. Literally. The world needs for some brilliant leaders, engineers, and environmental scientists who can not only develop workable solutions to save it, but a population who will COOPERATE instead of oppose them. Too many people don't believe there is a major problem until they are DIRECTLY affected by it; then they wonder why someone didn't WARN them.

As someone who lives in Phoenix and hears about this line all the time, I feel like it’s important to inform people that lawn and golf courses are a very small portion of the percentage of water use here. This is a talking point to distract your anger toward someone other than the actual culprit. Golf courses in Phoenix use recycled water. There are issues that need to be addressed still like flood irrigation lots, but in Phoenix people having real lawns has decreased by significant amounts. By far, the biggest drain on our water is agriculture. 70% of water use in Arizona is for agriculture. Phoenix residents use less water now than they did 50 years ago even with all the population growth. Agriculture either needs to invest in crops that use less water or start investing more into hydroponics and aeroponics. Otherwise they will get cut off because of these emergency declarations far before residents do. Residential homes are doing their part to improve the situation. We can always get better tho, but let’s keep our focus on the biggest issue.
