I was there a little over two years ago, my son graduate from boot camp, first time that far east, a NAVY buddy from when I was in, he lives in that area he pick me up and showed me around, we went to the graduation it's was cool, I remember my graduation in 1981 in San Diego, long time ago. I had never seen a fire fly before until that night, it was a cool trip for me and seeing my friend again and see my son graduate. Luc, soak up the times there.

Congrats to Maddie! Most people who have never seen Lake Michigan have the same reaction. They expect a small lake and get something that looks like the ocean.

I'm from Chicago, born and raised. You went through some of the most deadly areas if I think you were where you were. Chicago proper has 2.7 million people, and that's not including the suburbs. So, yeah, I can see it being a bit of a shock. But, aside from the hood, it's a beautiful city.

Dude, you just passed through my town!! Fort Wayne! If you swing back by, I can take you to my range while Susie shops for yarn!!! (the building next to that yarn barn, used to be my barber shop, and that Tru hotel is right across the street from my work!!)

As a former Chicagoan it was nice to see Indiana Dunes area again. I used to go there pretty often. Actually the Chicago Forest Preserve districts can be pretty awesome, it's one thing that city has going on. I lived right in the middle of the city but I could drive an hour and be middle of the woods which is actually a bit better than what I have right now in coastal Alabama.

It’s awesome that she graduated basic training, I can tell you guys are so proud. Those lakes are impressive, I like to go up to Erie every once in awhile. There is actually a exact replica of colonial era sea ship in Erie. In the summer you can actually pay to sail around the lakes, the guy at the museum told us that if you do sail it’s a full time job, you are working the entire time. If you volunteer to work on the weekends you can earn a place to sail on the ship, in another life I would have done that.

Brings back memories Luke and Susie. I went through Navy bootcamp there in 1966. It was tough but not as tough as the following 4 years. The whole experience toughened and strengthened me. I would not have given it up for anything else (even though I cursed it almost everyday during that time). I also had a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing am looking forward to seeing part 2 I'll watch tomorrow.

Hi! Ex-Navy here! I know what you're going through! I'm from the backwoods of NW Pa., Navy boot camp in San Diego and did the remainder of my 4-yr enlistment in Norfolk, Va. Talk about culture shock! I too hate cities - even small towns. I'm living in FLA now, retired but am looking to spend the rest of my years in a more mountainous, rural area. Doing my homework on that. Congrats to your daughter! Hope her enlistment goes well and she will have many happy memories!

Congrats to Maddie! I hear ya guys about the country lifestyle compared to the city. I grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Small town with vast empty spaces. Loved it as a kid. I've lived in Southern California now for over 20 years and even though I'm used to all the people and crowded places, I long for the emptiness of my old small town as a kid. So if the city freaks you guys, don't come to southern california...you'll have a heart attack. Even camping or hiking in the woods here is crowded. I envy your hikes and camps with barely a soul in site. Another great vid Luke and Susie!

Thank you for sharing. Congratulations to Madison! That is the greatest feeling. As a life time resident (50+ years) of Chicago I agree with your assessment of city life. It will suck the life and your soul out of you. Everyone moving fast to go nowhere. We have been looking to retire in eastern Tennessee. So was any cool yarn picked up? Yes the coffee in most places is just colored water, that is why Starbucks has been a great success, also you need to watch for small coffee houses. Stopping at Indiana State Beach was a great choice, one of the best views of the lake and you can see Chicago in the distance. Your selection of routes west of the duns and on the south side of Chicago was some of the most interesting parts of the city and not safe. No only are there a wide selection of Adult Clubs, liquor stores, you missed the chance to lose all you money at a casino. I hope on your way back you take the interstate or 294 to bi pass downtown. Glad you made it to Great Lakes with no issues. Safe and happy travels.

Nice road trip, guys! I had a CDL Class A license for 11 years and drove from Urbana and Columbus, Ohio delivering "piggybacked" Internationals and bulk products such as ash, plastic, syrup, etc. The first electrical items I purchased for my truck was a coffee percolator and a fridge. The road coffee (polite name for it) nearly ruined my desire for coffee.

Every Jeep privately owned or rented in Hawaii are heavily used and abused. A buddy of mine, Kalani, was a manager at one of the car rental companies and he used to tell me funny stories about Jeep rentals returned in "trashed" condition. Just as you were about to tell your Jeep story, I was thinking it would have been great to have the Moose on the dunes...LOL! Aired down the Moose could have owned the dunes. Congratulations to Maddie, too!

Next long road trip get off the highway and drive down local roads. South Dakota is a place you want to meet the locals. So friendly. All of them, even many(almost every car) waving people/families from oncoming traffic. On another topic, I always find it funny how leaving one state and entering another the landscape changes nearly immediately. Beautiful and diverse landscape in this country. Glad you're enjoying or enjoyed your trip and thanks for bringing us along and also for staying candid through it.

One thing you could have told her was that from the sand dunes hill you could (almost!) see the Recruit Training Command on the other side of the lake. The best time to see Lake Michigan is right after the Fourth of July. If that’s the first time you have seen Lake Michigan, then I’d like you to see it from the Michigan coast. Definite points of interest: South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, Grand Haven, Ludington, Pentwater, Manistee, Leland, Petosky, Charlevoix, Traverse City, Mackinac Island. Sandy beaches and the water gets more beautiful as you go north!
