Lake Powells 2024 Rise! | 39,000 CFS Colorado River Inflow UPDATE at Hite, Utah.

We observe the serene yet dramatic rise of Lake Powell at its northern point, known as Hite. Hite marks the confluence of the Colorado River and Lake Powell, where the river's water flows into the lake. Currently, inflows are increasing Lake Powell's water level by approximately 0.5 to 0.7 feet per day. This is a substantial amount of water, but will it be sufficient?
After the spring runoff, the Bureau of Reclamation will send whatever is left of 7.5 million acre-feet of water from the upper basin to the lower basin, specifically to Lake Mead. While both Lake Mead and Lake Powell have experienced two favorable years of water levels, as Lake Mead rises, Lake Powell's levels will decrease.

I had the good fortune to have camped at Hite on the East bank of the original free flowing Colorado in August of 1963. There was only a cable hand trolly for crossing the river. It was great fun to use but you were definitely on your own. There was only a single shed of a cabin on that west side. The Glen Canyon was amazing, beautiful, an unequalled in splendor. It's now a fraction of what it once was.

I was at the Hite Overlook last October. Thanks for showing up close along with the 83 flood information. I enjoyed this. I drove Utah 95 and loved it. Loved the Hite Overlook and area ❤.

Nice work, Ratty 👍 Firstly, can I just pay tribute to Jim Stiles, who left us in March this year. You are obviously familiar with the archive he accumulated at Zephyr over many decades. Some of those pictures of the 'lake' are invaluable because we may never again see Powell at full pool. The Flint Family video is pure gold. Footage of Hite Marina is as rare as hen's teeth, so thanks for including that 👍

@@DesertRatExploration Yeah, all good over here DR. Summer is finally trying to make an appearance - we're sweltering in 70 degrees today but it's due to get even more unbearable. Many thanks for this stunning video. You've captured the landscape in a perfect light and have packed so much detail into these 11 minutes. It was fascinating to see you at the high water mark where the decades-old driftwood still lies. It looks as though you are filming pretty much at the interface between the river and the flat water of Powell - interesting whirlpool stuff going on there. Jeez - the sediment! The sheer quantity is quite mind blowing. And all the time, this is being carved away and dumped further downstream. At 7:03 just above centre-screen there is a rocky knob poking up from the sediment. As we look at it, the Colorado originally flowed to the right of that. The top of the knob is at ~3650 and the historic elevation of the Colorado at that point was ~3460. For a while in the mid-sixties there was an airstrip there, probably to service the original fledgling Hite marina which was at Glencove where the floaters now struggle to take out. I'm reminded that Jim Stiles took those pictures in 1983 specifically because it was the flood year and he may well have captured Powell at an elevation well above 3700. It does look rather swollen and the same happened down at Mead. From this distance in time it seems almost unbelievable and that's why his, and others, pictures, accounts, documentation are so important. The Flint Family video was a great find. I've left my thoughts over there as to why I think it was filmed in August 1980. Best wishes and keep 'em coming ... 👍

September '23 I camped at the boat launch for one night en route to northern Utah. A USGS team was there launching pontoon boats off the STEEP edge. They were planning to be on the river for a week to study recovering rapids. A neat spot to camp.

Thanks for this update and all your effort. Highly appreciated. All that driving (i know its kinda out of civilization-ish) and a shot at 4:30am?? Wild comparisons between the 80s and now. I did visit the area many times starting 1989 or so, renting boats and stuff and i am a huge fan. Greetings from Munich, Germany

Amazing!! To see video from when the Colorado had that much water. I couldn't believe is just 40 years ago when it was like that. Thanks for putting those memorable videos on there. Glad you enjoyed it. I love adding history to these videos. It is insane to think we had that much reserves. But we have finally seen the Colorado Rivers limitations with Lake Powell and Mead.

Thank you for this video. I like to keep up to date. We live in CO not far from the CO River. I heard they recently accidentally released a bunch of water from Lake Powell. That really doesn't help. We were at Powell in April and will go back in Sept. We stopped at Hite a few years ago. The gas station was still open but we didn't go in. I wish would have.

Your welcome! Well it was a margin of error for that 40,000 acre feet. But that waster was still sent to the Lower Basin (Lake Mead). So, really the upper basin just sent extra to Mead. But the press in Colorado is making it a bigger issue. They technically just sent 0.5% more. Not a lot but enough to supply a 80,000 houses for a year.

Remember the early 1980s when the lake was full, Hite Marina was booming and a great stopping point on a long stretch of WONDERFUL highway 95...

Incredible footage! Hopefully again will be the 82,83 snowfall and packs again. I was a senior in high school that year , I’m 62 . I’d like to see full pool in person.

I still have a Hite Marina hat.....we rented a small patio boat once and as soon as we untied from the dock it started sinking....the good ole days....a lotta time spent there back in the 80s 90s.......they used to send the older leaky boats to Hite feomHalls and BF....lol

Wow! Inflow for Sunday 23rd (yesterday) was 51330 cfs with a rise of 0.92 feet. I certainly didn't see that coming. How much more do the mountains have to offer?

@@DesertRatExploration Oh, right. They revised the numbers. I thought it was odd. Sun 23rd inflow 28686 cfs with a 0.41 rise. As of yesterday (Fri 28th) still coming up 0.25 each day. Powell is over the high for last year but I'm not sure there's much left to come. Yeah, just seen the windy video. Quite dramatic!
