Thanks Basic Fishing yes the kayak has great potential for this style of fishing especially soft plastics something I have pursued further since this and will be covering the techniques for them and trout in a future episode,

Can you please give me a link for the softbaits you used? I can't seem to find the unscented ones
@NZkayakfishing
@NZkayakfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Okay yes the minnows are difficult to come across in NZ especially from Berkley however they can be found overseas. Another option is the Savage 4" shads which can be sourced in NZ.

Berkley Powerbaits are a scented softbait and not legal for use on the Rotorua Lakes (unscented softbaits only). Would suggest checking the rules before you promote the use of such a product, or you might lose your kayak if checked by a ranger.

Hey R C thanks for some feedback and am fully aware of the scent rule. I have had extensive discussions with the team at Eastern Fish and Game on this subject so first of all I would like to make you aware that the plastics used did not contain scent, however as you say the new Berkley products do. Having spent quite a bit of time chasing these fish on lake Rotoiti since this experience it is clear soft plastics work and the choice I prefer that complies with the regulations in this area are those available from Trent Hayman at Trout Pro Sportfishing and from Savage. Again thanks for the input and check out my new clip showing the soft plastics in action and how to use them here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmPOfIKhn9WnmJo

NZ Kayak Fishing I was refering to that first fish that didnt look so healthy when you put her back :)
@NZkayakfishing
@NZkayakfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Okay got you, yes that first fish. I am certainly no expert but trout are a bit different when on the line. They tend to give themselves a bit of barotrauma as they swim quite fast to the surface when in deep water of 20 to 30 meters. I was quite concerned when this happened but Herb who was fishing with us and a very experienced trout angler assured me they come right after going belly up when put back in the water. An that fish did exactly this but did swim away after some recovery.

Nice video Rob, what's the reason that you prefer using lip grippers instead of a net?
@NZkayakfishing
@NZkayakfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan, I just find nets a bit cumbersome on the kayak as I predominantly salt water fish and the lip grippers I use these days have a release button which makes grabbing a fish easy.
