The weepy reaction from the elderly show how cult-like this movement has become. Ever since the supreme court normalized gay marriage, all the people represented by that flag possess the same rights as those not represented by it. There is no longer a need to declare that a month be devoted to honoring a group of people based solely on their sexual proclivities. I'm impressed that the mayor was brave enough to make a stand. I honestly wish him luck weathering what will undoubtedly degenerate into a national-level media storm.

Wouldn't recommend it. The mayor's voice here is a minority, the outcry from the Lake Stevens population has been significant, we are already a welcoming community to LGBTQ folks. The Lake Stevens community is quite upset (rightfully) that he's using his official position and authority to act and speak out based on his personal beliefs, and not what is wanted by or best for the people he represents. If he wants to speak out about not supporting pride or not supporting LGBTQ individuals, or other personal opinions, that's all well and good, that's free speech, but it's inappropriate for him to speak about this in an interview as a public official, representing Lake Stevens government and our people. What he said and wrote as his justification for not declaring pride month after 2 years of doing so was entirely his own personal beliefs and dislike of transgender individuals. His own beliefs should not be the sole fact in what is put into policy for a city of 36,000 people. He's using his position of authority to amplify how many people both hear and believe his personal dislike/biases. It's unprofessional and inappropriate. People who are okay with that misuse of authority - whether they're conservative or liberal - are not someone most of us in Lake Stevens want moving here. And yes, I would say the same thing if he was, for example, a very liberal atheist who decided not to declare Christmas or any other religious day/period for the city despite having many Christian constituents, due to him personally not believing in it and not wanting to support it. Or any other similar example. He's entitled to his opinion and to share it, but not to making decisions and speaking out as the mayor, with authority, based off personal feelings and biases.

I think the commenters here are being intentionally obtuse and missing the point, or perhaps some are just ignorant. For most, it has nothing to do with safety or the lack of proclamation. Yes, I understand that the individual they interviewed who started Lake Stevens pride brought up safety and feeling welcomed, and that is how some feel, I am sure. But for the vast majority of both the Lake Stevens LGBTQ community and just many Lake Stevens constituents in general, are not concerned that a lack of a piece of paper declaring pride will make us feel unsafe or feel entitled to pride or anything like that. That is not the issue we have here. It's not even really about the Pride aspect, it's about him using a position of authority to further his own personal beliefs rather than listening to and representing his community, which - overall - supports the LGBTQ community. Yet when this gets brought up, comments go straight to mockery or dismissing us as being entitled or "needing" pride or etc. The Lake Stevens community is quite upset (rightfully) that he's using his official position and authority to act and speak out based on his personal beliefs, and not what is wanted by or best for the people he represents. If he wants to speak out about not supporting pride or not supporting LGBTQ individuals, or any other personal opinions, that's all well and good and no matter how much I may personally disagree, that's free speech. But it's inappropriate for him to speak about this in a professional interview or as a public official, representing Lake Stevens government and our people. What he said and wrote as his justification for not declaring pride month after 2 years of doing so was entirely his own personal beliefs and dislike of transgender individuals in particular. He didn't say it was because he wanted to keep identity matters out of politics or give any reason other than his own, individual beliefs. Those beliefs should not be the sole fact in what is put into policy from a politician for a city of 36,000 people. He's using his position of authority to amplify how many people both hear and believe his personal dislike/biases. It's unprofessional and inappropriate. People should not be okay with that misuse of authority - whether they're conservative or liberal - just because they agree with him on this specific decision, because it could easily go the other way instead. Next time, he (or another politician) may say something in an official capacity that conservatives disagree with strongly and is equally inappropriate to take an official stance on as a figure in power. And yes, I would say the same thing if he was, for example, a very liberal atheist who decided not to declare Christmas or any other religious day/period for the city despite having many Christian constituents, due to him personally not believing in it and not wanting to support it. Or any other similar example. He's entitled to his opinion and to share it, but not to making decisions and speaking out as the mayor, with authority, based on only those personal feelings and biases.
