I see a lot of comments say you should send this to coaches and Lonzo, which would be wise, but I wanted to take a moment to say that you deserve much more credit and views than you are getting. This is true basketball analysis at a professional level. I'm a high school player and watching these videos helps me learn smart decision making and better mechanics and teamwork. Your not only helping fans get a sense of what need to be improved, but your improving your fans. WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP MAN!!! Please like if you agree :)

Think that this analysis hasn't gone unnoticed by the Laker brass. During his rookie year changing a player shot is risky, as everyone here would agree. Best bet is to tweak his footwork, parts of the shooting form so that he's comfortable and consistent as the video suggest. He'll be fine

Len VDL: you are comparing a seasoned vetaran vs a rookie who hasn't played 20 nba games yet. he will learn to use his speed or lack of it and make good plays in the future it just takes some time.
@ThaLedg7 жыл бұрын
True True wall had 16+ ppg and 8apg as a rookie. If you want to compare lonzo to the other rooks, then how about De'aaron Fox or DSJ? Both average somewhere around 15ppg and 5a. Both are faster and more athletic then lonzo. So why are they able to make their reads but Lonzo Isent?
@intendedexpression66097 жыл бұрын
Len VDL:lonzo is averaging 7 assists hes making better reads than both of them natural passing talent. 8pts 6reb, 7 assists is decent for lonzo rn. fox and smith have just adjusted better when it comes to their scoring.

Very good analytics. One more point I would like to highlight is that he exposes the ball too much when he goes for a layup. Leaving him open to get blocked. We can find defects with just about anybody's shot mechanics but ultimately it comes down to Lonzo gaining the confidence to finish. He needs to get in there stronger and not expose the ball so much. He obviously knows how to finish, he did it well in college. It's more of a confidence thing than anything else. Most importantly like the video pointed out, he has to not do as much unnecessary things like switch hands when there no reason to.

MH_1231: I think its a combination of not yet adjusting to the size of NBA players, and playing basketball against older players too much as a youth. He thinks about the size of the other players too much. He thinks they're always going to block his shot... look at Lamelo's game. He's at least 6'3", but you'd think the rim was 20' feet high the way he shoots it. He still thinks he's a little kid.

You make some good points. Looks like small adjustments but I am not sure he can correct the 3-point issues nearly as well as his finish at the rim, and passing off penetration. He will need to learn to play through contact and get to the line, problem at the moment is he can't make FT either. More of a long-term project than the Lakers planned on
@epicDuftbaum7 жыл бұрын
It was always a long term project. This guy only played one year at UCLA. The longer you play at that level (of course you need good coaches) the better your fundamentals and you are more "game ready" than most other guys. His body is clearly not at NBA level and that is ok, everyone knew that. Maybe his start was a bit slower than expected, but it was always a long time project to begin with.

This video is awesome. It's crazy to see the difference between NCAA and NBA like this. When he came off screens at UCLA, he had plenty of time to pivot that right foot an extra few degrees before starting his jumper. In this video you see that even when defenders go under the screen, NBA players just close out to fast. He needs to have his feet in position to shoot as soon as he picks up his dribble and stop taking the extra half second to align himself
@2en1th7 жыл бұрын
not a lakers fan but still learned a ton from his analysis!
@simon_patterson7 жыл бұрын
Good analysis. I notice that almost all the dish off opportunities he doesn't take are outside his field of view. Combine that with the fact his team mates are too often in the wrong spots, and it makes it hard for him to be able to pass when a big is about to block him. You make a great point about how early he commits to his lay up though. He doesn't make use of the gather step like say LeBron or Westbrook do, and I think it would help him greatly if he did start a gather step at the point he currently takes his first of two layup steps. His follow through is so inconsistent on all his shots. Often (but not always) he keeps his shooting hand extended when the shot drops. Pulling back before fully extending the shooting hand is a sign (and, ironically, cause) of a loss of confidence. I think the best way to fix that is the exaggerate the follow through on the shot by keeping the shooting hand extended after the shot. He tried this in one of the examples where he missed a shot in your video, but then reverted back to an inconsistent follow through again.

Star Wizzy the ankle is more of an excuse to me but i could understand cuz he’s been lackin elevation on his layups and we’ve seen him be explosive around the rim (granted that’s with a head of steam and off one foot not 2 ft jumps but still) and yehh his conditioning seems off those chino hills don’t get u ready for nba life it’s time for him to get a proper offseason trainer (julius’s guy preferably)
@epicDuftbaum7 жыл бұрын
Well you cannot compare the games back at UCLA with NBA games. Everyone is longer, stronger and more athletic in the NBA. The defenders in the NBA are going up against freak athletes like Westbrook, Giannis or LeBron every night, Lonzo Ball isn´t that freak athlete by any stretch of imagination. Of course he can´t come in and dunk over guys like he used to do.

I'm pretty sure they want him to take those contested shots at the rim. So I don't think it will change. He was making right decisions in SL when we and the coaching staff were yelling at him wrongly for it.
@imyourhuckleberry45477 жыл бұрын
ItsPooly Yes. I think he passes enough and he needs to take those shots so close to the rim. I agree with the evidence that the video pointed out but I feel more than anything, he has to just simply get comfortable attacking the rim. He obviously knows how, just needs to get used to going up against pros.
@douglasmurdoch72477 жыл бұрын
ItsPooly lol wut? They want their pass first point guard to take smothered shots in the paint after drawing two defenders, more than they want him to pass to the open man? What?
@douglasmurdoch72477 жыл бұрын
I'm Your Huckleberry plain and simple it's the wrong basketball play to draw two men like that and not hit the open guy. You guys are wrong
@ItsPooly7 жыл бұрын
Douglas Murdoch There was like 3 total plays in SL where he wrongly kicked out when he didn't draw help yet coaching staff was saying they want him to take those shots. Other people on the team are taking lots of contested layups on drives and Luke referenced the fact that we're taking so many 2-point shots to bad shooting i.e. kick-outs not as valuable.
@imyourhuckleberry45477 жыл бұрын
Douglas Murdoch Normally you would be correct. However in this case, Lonzo passes up shots so much that if he's that deep, he should just finish. If you watch the games, 95% of the time he will make that pass.

Superb work. Zero doubt about his talent and potential. But being a Laker, 2nd overall pick and being Lavar's son of course adds the expectations and pushes idiots like Stephen A Smith into proclaiming him a bust after 10 games. But judging from this analysis, some of his decision making leaves a lot to be desired which is something that was supposed to be an absolute strength of his. 5 gold stars for decisions etc. Perhaps this is a major side effect to growing up playing high school ball for a team that essentially let the inmates run the asylum and honing his skills in his backyard rather than seeking coaching outside of his Dad. For the record, I'm a fan of Lonzo and even his Dad for building everything they have so far and continue to do so. I anticipate and look forward to improvement from Lonzo, I just hope others share your thoughts in the organization and help him along!
