Lakers Fans Want Darvin Ham Fired... Now. Barkley Says Blame Players and Rob Pelinka, not Ham.

WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG?
While not exactly the sentiment of every Lakers fan... it's the sentiment of many when it comes to the expected dismissal of Darvin Ham from his gig with the Lakers. After all, reports following LA's Game 5 loss to the Nuggets earlier in the week suggested Ham's job was all but gone. Subsequent reports say the Lakers are still moving down that path, potentially as early as the end of the week. Which, to be clear, is basically today. So if they know they want to do it, and are continuing to leak that they're going to do it... why haven't they done it?
Well, one reason might be the fallout from the last time they fired a coach. You may remember the Lakers received some flak, and lost out on opportunities to interview desired candidates, after they leaked that Frank Vogel was out and it was reported basically at the buzzer of their final game, before Frank Vogel even reached the podium. So, hey, don't do that again! But is this way any better, whether to be respectful to Ham or to burnish the team's reputation?
What could they be doing, beyond PR and news cycle management? Certainly the Lakers ought to be doing due diligence, making sure they like potential candidates out there more than they like the idea of trying to make it work with Ham. After all, the guy did have a reasonably promising first season before things went south this year, and isn't far off from being one of the more sought after head coaching candidates out there.
Maybe they're double checking with all the critical stakeholders not only about whether they're ok with Darvin going, but also what type of coach would make sense to replace him, and whether that hypothetical coach would be available. So maybe all of these things are happening, but if the Lakers have their minds made up, they ought to get it done sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, is all of this attention on Ham fair? Some hoops minds think he's getting too much criticism for how the team's season turned out. And does all of this distract from criticism Rob Pelinka should be getting?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers haven't canned Ham yet. Why?
SEGMENT 2: What should the Lakers be doing with this time?
SEGMENT 3: Is Pelinka escaping criticism?

One reason why players that move out or get cut from Lakers team look really good is they are cut too soon. Lakers don't allow continuity, I'd say the Lakers should keep the core together including Jaxon Hayes and just adjust the peripheral edges.

The present and future of the Los Angeles Lakers lies on the shoulders of Lebron James. The Lakers have a 178mil payroll next season if everyone opts in including DLo (w/o FAs TP, Spencer & Max). 1st apron is at 179.5mil. 2nd apron is 189mil. Now, why Lebron? If Lebron opts out & sign a new deal at 25mil/yr, the payroll goes down to 153mil. 26.5mil below the 1st apron. If this happens, the Lakers can use the full MLE of 13mil to sign a good backup big in Jonas Valanciunis. They can also resign TP (5mil), Max (4mil/yr) & Spencer (3mil). Then the Lakers can now trade for Trae Young (43mil). DLO + Rui + Gabe & 3 1st rounders = 47mil Lakers Roster: Trae - 43m AD - 43m Lebron - 25m Reaves - 13m Vando - 11m Valancuinis - 13m TP - 5m Max - 4m Wood - 3m Dinwiddie - 3m Cam - 2.4m Hayes - 2.4m JHS - 3.9m Lewis - 2m Vetmin buyout FA - 3m Total = 176.7million payroll. Wood will be the backup 4 for Lebron Valanciunis for AD Prince for Vando Max for Reaves Dinwiddie for Trae. 3rd string guys in Hayes & Cam w/ JHS and maybe a veteran buyout player. They can still of course trade AR for a 3&D wing if they want to. But at 13mil, who would you get thats better than AR at 13mil? If Lebron wont do this & sign a new deal of 60mil/yr and the Lakers trade for Trae Young, theyll be way over the 2nd apron. They can only sign FA Andre Drummond for a vetmin & cant sign a good buyout player that earned more than the MLE. They also wont be able to absorb excess salary in a trade & will defer some of their future picks. This is happening to Phoenix & Golden State by the way.

i dont care what the analytics say, he is not worth that money for a team that is trying to win a championship. For every 30 pts Lebron scores, he easily gives up 40 do to his lack of defense and rebounding, and also the effect it has on other players (Rui, Dlo, Austin) who have to carry his load. The team is desperately trying to tell the organization something when they beat Boston and Milwaukee earlier this year

This would work better if AR came off the bench to keep the flow of the offence going. Trae and Lebron along with AD, can use another 3-D player along with Vando. 6th man of the year sort of growth for AR! 🤙🏻
@bagskie
@bagskie 20 күн бұрын
@@arshiee13 any which way how they use AR wouldnt. Hes as productive starting or coming off the bench. But the key will still be Lebron signing a massive discount to at least have the option of using the full MLE on either a center or a 3&D wing.

To try and say Ham was amazing and had a great 1st year is clueless. Lakers fans, analysts and basketball fans (not merely Lakers fans) ALL unanimously thought MANY of the same things: -What the hell is going on with 3 guard lineups? -Is there any offensive scheme? -Why are you insisting on going small, when you have have bigger players, unused, and the current ones are just being shot over? -Stop holding on to your precious time outs! Hiarding them as if some crazy cat lady collector. These were EXCUSED BECAUSE THE PLAYERS got themselves to the Western Finals. AND Ham got a PASS because it was YEAR 1. Then we saw him continue to be stubborn and make the same exact coaching CHOICES (most of which had NOTHING to due with injury). He continued to show a stubbornness and a lack of understanding of the game, to which your grandma would even comment on how idiotic the choices were. That stubbornness and lack of awareness of the game showed in EVERY action and NON action and choice. NO ONE respects him, not his PLAYERS, other coaches, analysts, other teams players or coaches. His lineups are comedy gold for the entire NBA. When we ask ourselves "Even Luke Walton or Byron Scott would not even have the thought to do or not do some things as dumb as what Darvin has consistently done throughout both years - small ball basin Denver.... really??!? recheck the analysts ahead of that series his first year

Hindsight is 20/20 but what doomed the Lakers to their one championship in the Bubble was trading for AD. If they would have waited one more season they could have signed AD as a Free Agent. They wouldn't have won the Bubble Championship but they would have been able to keep all those draft picks and Ingram, Hart, Ball Etc... Let's not forget the Lakers have lost to the BEST team in the NBA two years in a row. They're not far off from being contenders. People need to calm down. On the other hand, Darvin is incredibly stubborn with his rotations, struggles to make smart strategic in-game adjustments, and the time-out thing is just weird. Also, I can't entirely agree with Andy's opinion on the Westbrook trade. Pelinka trusted his FRANCHISE players (one of whom many consider a Goat), leading to a costly mess he had to fix. Since that trade, you'll notice the FO stopped taking LeBron's advice. Pelinka did bring the Lakers a championship 3-4 years into his tenure, with a roster he was solely responsible for. He deserves some respect for that. The constant slander and mistrust are unwarranted.

Ham should be given one more year. The Lakers gave the defending champs all they could handle and more. Yeah, he made a few really dumb coaching blunders during the series, but is it Ham's fault that DLo and Rui didn't even bother showing up?? And what happens if their next coach is worse, which is highly possible... RU gonna keep changing coaches every year?? That's absolutely frickin insane....Mike Malone was horrible his first few years as Nuggets coach, but the ownership was patient and stuck with him, even though many in Denver wanted him fired in 2019. It’s both the coaches fault AND the players fault. The problem is that there’s a massive double standard regarding accountability and lakers fans. Did Darvin Ham take responsibility for his poor coaching? No, and lakers fans piled on him and demanded that he’s fired immediately for it. You know who else did not take responsibility? The players. We watched nearly every lakers player give post game interviews and all of them (except Austin Reaves), including Lebron James, blame the failed season on injuries and nothing else. Where was the outrage from lakers fans for the lakers PLAYERS lack of accountability. Does barkley give dumb takes? Sure he does, but he’s not entirely wrong about this one. The team isn’t good enough, just like it wasn’t last year. Literally no upgrades were made to the roster. To be honest, id rather listen to Barkley on this one, who is an 11 time allstar and a top 50 player of all time, than a bunch of no name podcasters who are clearly pandering to their audience for clicks and views and a bunch of no name beat reporters, who are afraid of criticizing the players for fear of loss of access.

I'm probably one of a small minority of fans that have seen all of the different Lakers teams since they moved to Los Angeles in 1960. My problem with the current team and situation is that firing Darvin Ham is simply the tip of the iceberg. Not a real solution. Ham is being used largely as the fall guy for a Lakers team that is in need of more than just a few minor tweaks. I see the problem as the ownership and front office and a dismal transition from the passing of Dr. Buss in 2013, and Jeanie's inheritance of running the franchise beginning in the 2013-14 season. I believe we missed the playoffs altogether, beginning with the 2013-14 season, for 6 consecutive seasons!!We then went through the Magic/Pelinka power struggle. I don't know the details, just that the Lakers front office appear to be Nepotism to the max. Pelinka, Kurt and Linda Rambis, the Buss brothers handling talent evaluation, scouting and drafting. One of Dr. Buss' strengths was that he knew to surround himself with experts and let them run things. Everybody knows that Jerry West was legendary for evaluating talent and making shrewd deals. I just look at the past ten years, and how sad it is that this once storied and vaunted franchise now struggles every year just to qualify for the playoffs. We need a front office that is top of the line and will challenge the owner to winning and greatness, rather than being a hostage to a 40-year old future HOFer. The Lebron experiment has not worked. Some fans, and many others, will debate that we got the plastic Covid title in 2020, forgetting that we got amazingly lucky that the commisioner suspended the mid-season for 4 months, which allowed the first year AD to heal and return from an otherwise season-ending injury. AD then dominated the Finals in all categories, even though they gave Lebron the FMVP award. It is time to move on from Lebron. Excluding the above 2020 title, our finishes have bern 10th, 7th, 11th, 7th, 7th. The past three years our overall record is 123-123, a .500 winning %. Jeanie held on to Kobe for too long, offered him an unrealistic contract due to past services, and is about to do the same thing with Lebron!! There is even talk of Bronny. What has happened to this franchise??? Do we need the Guggenheim Group?? Maybe ownership and the front office will wake up when they see our archrival Boston Celtics in June battling for title #18??

This franchise has regressed to such as extent that moving on from LeBron might mean a decade of playoff less mediocrity... Lakers will be perpetually vying for the 14/15 seed in the West .... Are you ready for that? With incompetence of this front office in the forefront, What is your confidence that they will put together a winning team?? You pooh pooh the 2020 championship ...it is so grossly condescending... I think 10 yrs from now, having been the laughing stock of the league, butt of the most vile jokes, you'll probably appreciate this LeBron-AD era and will long for the bygone days....😂 That's exactly what you obnoxious Laker fans deserve

Let me repeat this because you guys sometimes don't to be honest. There is NO GM in the league who wouldn't have done what Palinka did in regards to Westbrook. His superstar who he wants to sign an extension asks him to trade for another hall of fame player, selling them on how he can make it work. Why not it's Lebron, who before that had the reputation of making any team work. Yes their going to do it. And only player he didn't have that type of pull was Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Krause valued Phil's opinion more than Jordan. So the Westbrook is not on him.

A few things here. First, neither LeBron nor AD had an extension imminently looming at the time of the Westbrook deal. Yes, you're always thinking about the next one, but that's not the same thing as staring it down. The Lakers were in no pressing danger of losing LeBron or AD if they declined that request. So that wasn't a factor here. Second, as I said here (and many times in previous shows), I don't believe the narrative about Pelinka being pressured into doing this against his will, anyway. The Lakers are a star (bleeper) organization and Pelinka shares that same philosophy. I've never thought this was an idea that he hated to begin with. But that said.... (third) if, and again I stress IF, Pelinka did actually think this was a bad idea, then it's ABSOLUTELY his job to prevent it from happening. And contrary to what you may believe, stars sometimes get told no, or see moves against their wishes. LeBron, for example, didn't get Kyrie as a Lakers teammate when it was abundantly clear that's who he wanted. Kobe had both Caron Butler and Lamar Odom traded away very strongly against his wishes. The Lakers refused to trade Andrew Bynum for Jason Kidd. They hired Mike Brown over Brian Shaw (Kobe's choice), then Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson (Kobe's choice). So yeah, if Pelinka really thought Russ would be a disaster, it was his *obligation* to say no. It certainly would have saved the Lakers, and by extension, LeBron and AD, a ton of future aggravation. Appreciate you watching. AK

You guys are spinning from one direction and joining the bandwagon of lopsidedness. I've been a die hard Lakers fan since 1969. I've witnessed the Jerry/Wilt, Magic/Kareem, and the Kobe/Shaq-Gasol eras. And I've witnessed this next era of LeBron/AD. This tenure of LeBron is very different. He's gone through 81 players and 3 head coaches where he has blamed teammates, coaches, front offices, and refs for his failures for the past 14 years. His layers of media bias are very deep with little resistance. But when he flops, throws childish tandems, and plays laxadazile defense,.it's time to move on from LeBron, and usher in the next era. When LeBron replied, "That it is just basketball", it shows that his heart isn't in it. And when AD stated that we "Don't know what we are supposed to do", it's not a reflection on Darvin Ham, but it's a reflection of LeBron calling his own shots offensively and being out of position to defensively way too many times.

@rayd4974 actually no, kd can play well with lakers supporting cast and lbj already complains with coach and cast. Only problem is lbj goes to non la area. Then lbj should stop crying cause he has a good enough team just need continuity not always changes yearly and blame. Rui was guarding porter gordon and jokic that's why his Stat was low when lbj goes around complaining and saying iso with ball not listening to coach and that ruins the team chemistry. That's why ad complained at the end not throughout the season. So let lbj got to a team with 2 other superstar again so in future he can blame min. Players again and coach
