It's not that she's afraid he doesn't like her, she knows he does but she understands that she can't be too forward with him or she'll scare him off. In one of the manga extras she says he's like a cat, you can't get close to him too fast or he'll run. One of the greatest thing about this anime is how well she gets Ichikawa and leads him where she wants (christmas date being a good example).

**MANGA SPOILERS** My absolute favorite part of the manga is the note Ichikawa finds that Yamada wrote to Hanzawa. It's one of the only times we get Yamada's inner thoughts, and it gives us more of the cat analogy "About Ichikawa, he's actually super shy. It can sometimes be hard to see, but he's always thinking about -me- people. Thinking way too much even. If you get close, he pulls away. He's just like a cat, really. We built our relationship up slowly, a little bit at a time. That time and that closeness is something special and precious to me."

The relationship is build gradually throughout the series until she finally confess when she knows she can finally confess without driving him away which happens in chapter 113

Ichikawa doesnt have a negative view on everything. He just doesnt want to get his hopes up. Imagine you're like the emo guy in school that everyone sees as weird and then suddenly, the prettiest girl in your class shows interest in you. Wouldn't that be too good to be true? Our mc Ichikawa isnt actually dense unlike other romcom mcs and he actually gets the hints that Yamada throws at him. Its just that its too good to be true for him so the hints ends up getting shoved up his ass. The show made a good analogy for an explaination. Yamada is like the ps5 he wanted as a kid. He can't get a ps5 so he convinces himself that he hates consoles because he cant get one

From a character writing standpoint this is arguably THE BEST anime romcom...the setting and events are incredibly normal and basically just the character writing and yet we still get to feel all these feels, its way too good

Definitely agree, it's so realistic the way the story told and things happen in this anime also it's has progress and not stagnating in the middle like any other romance and the most important thing they act like a real teenager, they're pure and innocent also a bit horny(because of puberty), sometimes awkward and struggles because of misscomunication but they resolved it quickly by talking to each other not like any anime while some misscomunication can turn the anime into the whole drama, definitely the best romcom in the last few years

A thing that I love about this episode is that Pickup senpai was flirting with Yamada to go play games in his house without success. But then apparently Yamada liked the tip and used the same flirt tactic on Ichikawa hahaha. Not even trying to hide.

@@ssjokg4952 I'm not OP, but personally I prefer one particular line from the manga that the anime leaves out, which explains a LOT about why Ichikawa acts the way he does in this episode. When thinking about Haruya seeing himself and Anna in the library, Ichikawa remarks something like, "I didn't want to see him make that sort of face." As we've seen throughout the show, Ichikawa is DEEPLY empathetic. He feels what others feel almost as strongly as they do--and he's not mature enough yet to separate that out from himself. So, the pain he felt seeing Haruya's disappointment and sadness adds to the sense of betrayal that pushes him to assume the worst from Anna. I think the anime's a little worse for leaving out that line. It may seem like a small change, but it's a crucial line to explain how drastic Ichikawa's response is.

Yeah the thing with Kyou is that despite his low self-esteem when he wants to tell you something you're wrong or he feels like not right he is definitely that daring and honest with that person especially with Yamada

Despite her dorky demeanor, this episode once again shows how cunning Yamada really is. First, she tried to steal Ichikawa's bike so she can spend more time with him. Then, contrary to what they agreed upon the day before, she didn't bring the manga on purpose so she can set-up a date with him (Without Ichikawa knowing, of course) on Christmas Eve, which is the next day and finally getting his LINE account. Thankfully, Season 2 is just around the corner.

There are so many details about this series, both in the manga and anime, which makes this series so damn good. I'll keep saying this. This is the best romance anime. It feels so natural yet ethereal at the same time. Ichikawa and Kobayashi were in the same situation in this episode and had two different reactions. Ichikawa was a doubter. He kept his distance to protect himself by not hoping too much. On the other hand, Kobayashi clung to any hope she saw, even if it was deceptive and false. Both their reactions were not optimal; something in the between probably is the best way to handle those types of situations. I love how the community bands together, giving insights on things we can easily miss watching or reading through this series. Thank you for the reaction!

Quick lost in translation note. At the end of the episode you see Yamada say "Kyo..." which is the nickname Ichikawa's family uses for him. It's also the Japanese word for "today." So for the next episode, just remember whenever Yamada says "today" there is a double meaning to it

I have face similiar situation like ichikawa when 3rd grade high school, but I have the different ending, if ichikawa realize that yamada not used him and be reconcile with yamada again. But I'm not reconcile with her (even from the start I realize and understand that her not intend to used me) and keep avoiding her until our graduation. I think the only part of the whole season I really found dissatisfactory was the resolution this ep. It feels like they completely invalidated what he was feeling after the library incident, but from a guy's perspective I would absolutely be left hurting if I realized I was being used as "boy-repellant" while I had genuine feelings for a girl. She did literally use him in that scene in a clear-cut way and left without explaining or saying anything, and unfortunately it snowballed right into his insecurities. Idk, I just didn't like that Yamada was seemingly absolved simply by crying and he was portrayed as having thrown a petulant tantrum over something that would genuinely feel shitty.
