What about room service after the kids go to sleep? Enjoy dinner and keep your kids safe. Alternatively, dump the kids on family and have an adult getaway.

how easily can a child leave a cruise-cabin...? he does not have a key or anything. I guess safety stuff had changed a lot... and these are really young kids... but, at 5 or 6 years of age my parents definitely would leave me in the hotel when they went out to the bar late at night, and this was at an all-inclusive near Barcelona... I do not know when the limit is, but it does seem they were not much further than say when you are working in a different part of the house at home, so, if they can go up there any time they see any problem (via whatever system of monitoring they were using), they are probably minutes away.

Leaving toddlers in the cabin while you go for dinner? Absolutely appalling parenting. A cruise ship can be a dangerous place, particularly the young children. If they wanted a couples vacation they should’ve left their kids with grandparents or something. Sounds like they saw them as an inconvenience in the daytime and in the evening. Just sad really.

The toddler story is absolutely INSANE!! My youngest son was about 6 or 7 when we first started cruising & because most of my immediate & extended family would also be traveling with us, we would either alternate times to keep each other’s kids, or pay the fee for the private babysitter service provided by the cruise line. That’s extremely dangerous & irresponsible for those parents to do!!!

I remember a comedian talking to to two little girls in the second row (ages 6 and 7) and he finally spoke to the adults beside them, thinking it was the parents. Nope. Then he asked the audience: “Where are the parents?” Crickets. The girls said the parents dropped them off and went to the cabin. 😮 I’m sure they weren’t counting on being outed like that BUT think about it. Now their kids were vulnerable to any perv in the audience. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

It was out of control with kids of all ages, running the hallways, pushing all the buttons on elevators, jumping off of furniture it sounded like above our heads. This was all day long…it was crazy🤪 We found out from some parents directly at a private dinner that “they felt safe, letting their children roam the ship that it was good for them to learn to separate from the parents” Out of sight out of mind is what I have to say👎🏼

What happens to the kids if there is an emergency and you are at the other side of the ship from your room. Not a good idea to leave your kids by themselves. I have sat at a table for four people at the buffet because of not enough seating but people ask if they can sit and there was no problem sharing the table. Future cruise credit to be used within a year is not good for older people like me. I might be in good shape to cruise NOW, but anything can happen in the next year that would prevent me from cruising. This has happened to me several times since the pandemic and I’ve lost a lot of money.
@kathryncashner3294

Look into private insurance coverage. I'm not a travel agent, so I'm not sure what various companies or policies cover if your cruise is canceled and the cruise line doesn't give you a cash refund. You are completely correct that a future cruise credit is not the same as a refund. Maybe the Dept of Transportation needs to implement some rules for cruises departing from or porting in the US that if the cruise line bumps you for any reason other than the ship unable to cruise due to weather, you are entitled to a 100% cash refund within a given time period. Nothing is that simple, but the idea is that a future cruise credit isn't good enough. Ditto for the flights involved. The cruise lines typically want to pay the $50 fee to change the flight tickets, but what if you don't plan to fly or plan to use that airline within a year?

@@patriciareynolds1800There is a qualitative difference between the sound of humans physically present engaging in conversation (and even that, as you suggest, should generally be kept to a polite level) and sounds coming from an electronic device. I say this as someone who works with technology and audio/video technology in particular. For that matter, have you ever noticed how pleasant an office becomes (in some respects, certainly not all, but in terms of sound) when the power goes out? There are various personal sound devices, one of which should work for just about everyone. In the vast majority of cases, there’s no good reason and no excuse for using your speaker in a public place.

This absolutely infuriates me! Not only could somebody come into the room and take your child, or who knows what 😢 If you’re in a balcony room if the kiddo got out the door onto the balcony, I don’t think I even need to say what could happen 😱 those cabin rooms may be small but there’s a lot of things that can happen. This makes me sick to my stomach. If this story is true, and if it’s true, I being a foster parent hope that this gets to the proper authority so that those children are placed in a safe place until the parents get help to figure out what’s right and wrong and what’s safe and not safe for their children. 🙏🏻

Glad you are covering this and I hope more do. Parents who are influencers need to realize they are an example for many. Just because they are influencers and many look up to them, does not make everything they do ok. There are other more comfortable places on cruise ships to drink, read, chat, play games etc than the buffet. Once you've finished eating get out of there. When my son was 9 months old, I was living with my parents while my husband was in the army stationed overseas. I was sound asleep the night my 9 month old son-in the same room with me- craweled up and out of his crib, it was a very high crib and he was learning how to crawl-again, 9 months old! and I did not hear a thing. So, he had to climb up, then down, and he then proceeded to crawl through the house to the family room, which had a garden area, enclosed, thank goodness. My mom woke me, laughing really hard, because he was happily playing, and eating the dirt (which the doc said he was ok after a good laugh.) These people should be Banned Forever from cruising! They are really lucky-a higher power was looking out for their baby/babies. Kids are amazingly resourseful, you never know what they are capable of! Oh my gosh, this story terrified me. When I was in the Cayman Islands there was a robbery at a Jewelry Store. Our guide linked out that it’s an island, where are you going to go to get away? Doesn’t that sorta apply to cruise ships too? Yes, I get that it isn’t just getting your kid back, but being sure they aren’t harmed. My first thought, like you Tony, was can they open the balcony door, or the cabin door. Or, do they truly sleep through the night after going to sleep? My mom used to pick Dad up from his flights, about 20 minutes round trip I think. This was normally about 5 am it seemed. I was about 5 my brother this 3. I was a light sleeper and woke up when mom left: they found me in the kitchen near the back door crying because everyone was gone! They learned to wake me up to tell me they were going and would be right back and that never happened again.

If an emergency happened while the kiddos were left unattended in the cabin, what would they do? They might not make it back as quickly as they’d like. It’s not like the children can open the heavy door and ask for assistance. Especially if they are young enough to have baby monitors. People confuse me more everyday.

You can usually hire a babysitter to come babysit your children in your cabin

There were 3 passengers that were sitting in the buffet area playing cards AND had a Bluetooth speaker playing rather loud during lunch on the Mardi Gras this past March. None of the staff said anything to them. 😤 Just because they’re on a ship doesn’t mean they should be so trusting! I would never leave my children in the cabin by themselves!!!! That’s neglectful parenting, in my opinion.

Sometimes you can't find a table for 2 so we sit at the end of a table for 6 and we will always tell people they are welcome to join us. We try not to do that but it happens.

Apparently there was extended family in the cabin with the babies at all times. The monitors were just extra in case the parents were needed.

NEVER, should you leave a child unattended on a cruise ship. I would hope any adult would know this. I’m far from a perfect parent, but this is basic child care, safety, and common sense. I feel sick just thinking of everything that could have happened. Makes my heart hurt.

Thanks for the little extra entertainment today. Hopefully you can still do a show while you are in Italy. I miss when I don't get my Tony fix for the day.

Tony the comment about Lido was made about the Journey cruise that we are on. What’s left out is that they opened up the 3rd floor dining room for people to play games and cards

I’m surprised they don’t have spare lifeboats at the ports just in case something like this happens.

Our teenager hangs in our cruise cabin a lot because she doesn't like eating in the main dining room, and we do. She'd rather have pizza. Same with all the trivia and "old people" activities, she'd rather hang in the cabin and watch TV. She does enjoy the shows and attends those with us.

The surly gondaliers. I remember them well. Nice boat ride though. Venice looked sad.
