Lamar Jackson: overlooked, not a QB … Unanimous MVP

Lamar Jackson is part of a rare group of players who have won the Heisman Trophy and an NFL MVP Award. Even more impressive, Jackson is one of just two MVPs to win the award unanimously. The other is Tom Brady - widely regarded as the Greatest Quarterback of All Time. Despite being in elite company, Jackson is often pegged as not being a “true quarterback.”
It’s an unfair label that’s followed him since high school but Lamar has proved his doubters wrong at every step. I mean, forever being linked with the GOAT ain’t half bad. But Lamar’s journey to get the proper recognition he deserves hasn’t been easy. He was once a guy overlooked by major college programs, told to switch positions, and someone that critics thought wouldn’t survive in the NFL. Let’s meet these versions of Lamar Jackson in the prism.

One of the most underrated aspects of lamars story is what was done for him at college. Playing under a coach who was forward looking enough to work with an athletic qb while forcing to play in a pro style passing offense. It's no wonder he was able to translate to the league so well as a passer. Especially considering he was playing under Greg Roman.

@@Montrealmancanadiens First things first… you can’t make the playoffs if you’re terrible in the regular season. People talk about playoff records as if it’s the only thing and it ain’t! And it’s such a bull***t position to take because the regular season gets a team to the playoffs. And more importantly only 1 team is actually happy at the end of the season! Furthermore the closer you get to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy the bigger the heartbreak! But feel free to explain how having 5wins in 5post seasons is better. Man y'all pulled this too early. I get the series, and I get he's already lived enough stories to match most players full careers, but the dude is the favorite for MVP . . . again. Just six months later and he's clearly got more story to write. Especially in the context of the Prism series, I feel like the more recent disrespect and the doubts about sustainability of his style before and into the beginning of the year is yet another chapter of Lamar topping the doubters.

That 2018 draft was wild in terms of quarterbacks. It really feels like a moment in time truly defining before and after. People really were wrong about Josh Allen and #7 felt way too late in hindsight. Lamar Jackson at #32 feels like blasphemy in comparison. But Baltimore really had to adjust to figure out how to get the most out of him. Seeing him brought in for obvious QB keep plays that first year was harsh. Now, it's expected to be able to utilise that kind of player.
@tidmarshXC

It's odd that that draft was completely flipped from what people were projecting. The consensus at the time was that Darnold and Rosen were the safest picks, Mayfield was a bit riskier, and Allen and Jackson were pure gambles.

@@tidmarshXCIn the end the gamble picks turned out well, the safest picks ended up being busts, and Baker Mayfield has had his moments but hasn’t been anything amazing. Out of curiosity, going into that draft what about Darnold and Rosen made them seem like a “safe” pick?

@@tidmarshXC The main reason why these quarterbacks succeeded while the other two failed is because it depends on how good the team develops them. I do believe that Sam Darnold, and Josh Rosen could’ve succeeded, but they just ended up on really bad teams. And Josh Allen Lamar Jackson succeeded, because they went to a really good organization that knew how to develop them through their strengths and weaknesses

@@fortynights1513 Rosen had immense football IQ and "threw the ball beautifully" [mike Mayock's words]. Sam I honestly never understood the hype, my guess is arm strength? Admittedly they went to some pretty bad situations, but they still didn't do much with what they were given.

@@fortynights1513 Darnold and Rosen were safe picks as viewed by the old ways of evaluating QBs. Tall, pocket passers who throw a lot in the college system making reads. I think that Bill Polian was judging Jackson not by the color of his skin but by the content of his completion percentage. Polian is quoted as saying, "Jackson should switch to wide receiver, because his throwing accuracy isn't there." His assessment here is wrong but it is not unjustified. In his Heisman Trophy winning season, Jackson was 82nd in the nation in completion %. A year later he was 55th. Another point that needs clarification is: "there weren't multiple teams that asked Jackson to do receiving drills, apparently, there was only one: The Los Angeles Chargers." I would also like to point out that Polian was not wrong to question Lamar Jackson's accuracy. He ranked 9th in the NFL during his MVP winning season but has followed that up the last three years with 27th, 22nd, and 24th place finishes in the category.

I am really hoping this video was made way too early because Lamar has always and still seems like his best play may yet be to come, even when he is doing things that have never been done before.

The racism is inexcusable, but there were legitimate criticisms of his game thru his rookie year, albeit overblown ones. Year 2 Lamar was such a better passer, and he pretty much fixes all the holes, but there were some to begin with

Lamar Jackson should be celebrated as a classic underdog story and an example of hard work and dedication allowing you to achieve your dreams and he’s not. Idk why he isn’t but that’s for y’all to speculate on. People are even more willing to embrace people like Joe Burrow in that regard and Joe was far more liked as a prospect in HS and coming out of college.

Can’t wait to see him with a decent wide receiver…. He will look great for the 6 games OBJ plays before being hurt. He never seems to connect on the deeper passes but he never had a big body deep threat at WR. Hard to judge him fairly but I wouldn’t call him a top passer. He’s fine as a passer but as a quarterback he’s amazing.

I remember that draft so well. I'm a Az Cardinals fan and told my dad the only QB I want is Lamar Jackson, he told me all the BS that his old head analysts were saying and he was happy when we got Josh Rosen. I disagree with your take that Tim Ryan the announcer was blatantly racist. He commented live on the air where everyone can hear that it's hard to see when he does a fake "because dark skin, dark ball, dark uniform". Lamar said he wasn't offended by this and didn't want the guy fired. It's not very fair for you to just publicly call a guy a racist who made an observation. That guy still has a job and Lamar and the team didn't think he was racist. 👎

Passer Rating Rankings since MVP: 2022: 17th 2021: 23rd 2020: 12th Not exactly an “unfair label” to say he isn’t a true QB. Not to mention, dude can’t hold a season together. Stop using his 2019 season as a safety blanket. Guys are supposed to get better. You sound like everyone still defending Cam in 2020. 2019 was a fluke. You can find guys off the street who rush for 1000 yards. Get above 3K passing before you even consider being labeled a “serviceable” QB. His peak was 3,127. That’s Trubisky territory. (Actually, Trubisky had more). You’re just turning this guy into Uncle Rico talking up his glory days.

I enjoyed this video, and its a good idea to view Lamar through the Prism. That being said, I think it's still too early to put him through the Prism. He's accomplished a lot (establishing himself as a top QB, unanimous MVP), but he's also only won one playoff game... Time will tell where he ends up on that end.

As a Ravens fan now I think it is an appropriate time. The contract disputes, the trade request and the ultimate return to Baltimore felt very much like the closing of the first chapter of Lamar's career. The next chapter begins in the fall. It's a good time to reflect.

I'm west Baltimore born and raised and as a Ravens fan I speak for most of us in saying THIS WAS THE BEST DRAFT PICK IN OUR HISTORY! All of this said, I do t think that there are many knowledgeable football fans who would want Jackson as their QB. I just don’t believe he can win with his arm in the fourth quarter, especially in the playoffs. He will never get to a Super Bowl, let alone win one. I’d be surprised if he even got to the conference championship.
@colincraigo5793
@colincraigo5793 Жыл бұрын
Running Quarterbacks are not sustainable. Simple as that. A QB's best weapon is his throwing arm followed closely by his head. His legs should be complimentary. It's the 4th quarter and you are down by 5 points starting at your own 14 yard line. You only got 1:02 left in regulation and one time out. How do you get into the endzone in time? You throw the ball. That's how Brady would do it and how he did do it. That's how Mahomes currently does it. Crossing your fingers that your QB breaks off for 40 or 50 yards in one play may work every once in a blue moon, but it ain't sustainable. That's not how you win championships, create a winning culture or better yet, create a dynasty.
@jamesmarshall6619

Numerous analysts have broken down the tape on Lamar's passing over the last few years and just about every single one of them praises his passing and show that yeah, he's a good passer despite what some dunce might think or say. They also to a person point out that Greg Roman's passing schemes are horrible, he's great at putting together run schemes but his passing schemes are just bad so Lamar is excelling in spite of the scheme he played in. Does Lamar still need to prove himself in the playoffs? Of course but the idea that he's not a good passer just isn't supported by tape, stats, nothing, and he's done all of this despite working in a bad scheme with often underwhelming or injured talent.
