I love how you can still hear the blues in the playing especially in Marks solo in WWMIH. Such an awesome tip of the hat to roots.

If you think playing in a drop tuning is easy? More power to you, I tend to play in a sharp tuning (which still requires full chord hold downs, it's just more natural to me because I first learned to play that way). Sometimes I wish I first learned how to play in drop tuning. You have to adjust to drop tuning, and do it well to achieve and appreciate what they are doing. Any intermediate and above guitarist knows it's true. Thanks goes out to Willie and Mark for taking the time to do this!!!

He does have a unique picking style that makes me feel awkward watching him play, but let's face facts, the man is a beast. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Rabo Redfield Some people get too technical these days when it comes to picking posture, the way to hold the pick, not curling all your fingers in to a fist etc.

I love how you can hear how little gain Mark uses. It drives me crazy hearing amateur guitarists using insane amounts of gain and it ends up sounding like a fuzzy mess. Pretty much any professional or seasoned guitarist will tell you to dial it back considerably. That is how they get so much articulation, clarity and crunch. The same can be said for those who scoop their mids. That is your meat! Use those mids or you will get lost in the mix and sound weak!

weedshoes A few things. First off, although I love Dime's work, I believe he had, for the most part, a horrible tone. Also, multi tracking makes a lot of guitars sound more distorted than they really are while retaining a lot of definition. Try watching some tutorials and watching live rigs. They don't use nearly as much gain as you think and yes, they also use their mids. But hey, go right on ahead and turn your gain to 11 and dial out your mids. Let me know how that works in a live setting when no one hears you or you offend their ears.

uhh....they use emgs....the most distorted pickups out there. what your hearing is a lack of bass not distortion, i uh kinda have and use the same pickups and settings so lol.....quit your dime bashing none believer! lol

+Benjamin Rapp This is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. You offer knowledge here, it is wisdom if one chooses to use it. That said, guys will rub out numbers on gain dials before ever noticing that numbers even were written there, but it's typically because they know what they're actually doing very well.. It fuzzes out sloppy playing , hiding mistakes for the ears of a handful of drunk buddies... It's a wide area between pickup adjustment and quality, volume functions, and basic amp levels. I've always run high gain, but I play Marshalls strictly so their valvestate series, like their tube amps, could get away with it, and when using a decent amount of discipline and finesse, as well as volume level on instrument, having the effect available on hand has been preferable. Or for home solo practice, with no bass backing or 2nd rythym, the sustain can be friendly. .. In my opinion, dime was of that same school of thought that, a good player will make a shitty rig sound like a field of daisies, so his tone could be one way one night and different the next. I you mean the studio tones...well your entitled, hahaha I dont 100% agree, although there was a time when I didn't like his style or tone.. Mids are like kids, they can be whiney if you let me run open too long, or too much, but you'll hear them loud n clear, no question...lol

It really doesn't make sense to focus on mark when his guitar doesn't have any fret markers. It's probably on purpose to make it harder for everyone to figure out

I watched this over and over, Mark's part is easy to decipher sonically and visually in walk with me in hell, as for Willie, I think he just bullshits his part live because it's a harmony in minor key and no one pays attention to the full step and a half lines, its minor anyway it's not like it really has a true harmony to it.
