Thanks for this! I'm enthusiastic about electric, and really looking forward the prospect of owning one. I'd say that we're still in early days -- but things are moving fast and this pushes the envelope forward. When we're up to 250-300 miles range, good infrastructure and fast charging, then I'm in. I reckon that's 6-7 years away.

@ssmith954
@ssmith954 2 жыл бұрын
@@ikbendusan It will happen, only question is how quickly. Zero is already promising 227 miles city range for the 2022 S/RS model. With energy density improvements it's not a stretch to think that at the very least a 10-30% improvement on that will come within the next 6-7 years.
@ikbendusan
@ikbendusan 2 жыл бұрын
@@ssmith954 and who is going to ride a bike and spend 227+ miles worth of time only riding in the city? commuters use the highway because it's faster; recreational riders like to go fast so they go for the twisties and the track. i'll be impressed if that kind of range can be obtained in those conditions, but, until that is the case, i find that using city range as a metric is deceptive
@ssmith954
@ssmith954 2 жыл бұрын
@@ikbendusan City range is actually where motorcycle usage is the most frequent, so it's the most helpful metric for the majority of customers (at least in Europe). In addition, not everyone with a motorcycle in a city has access to an easy charging point. But yes, highway range is the important metric and that's typically half of city range, so there's still a way to go and as such it's quite deceptive. Electric car tech is advancing quickly and this is where the tech will trickle down from. Ducati is making the shift in large part due to pressure from their parent company Audi. The Japanese brands are behind, but they can catch up quick if the market incentive is there.

The thing is most people don't ride their motorcycles 100's of miles a day every day. A liter bike doesn't get more than 150mi of range. It's not really fun to spend more than 300mi on a bike in a day. At 80mph that is less than 4hrs. If you need to charge 3 times you'll be at a 5-6hr day total. This one claims to have a 250mi range. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJqmhnl4gZ2Fbq8

Great review Chopsy. They sound weird, but that weird is only because they sound like they're from a sci-fi movie. They sound like the future :) .... ... so many people point out the weight and lack of range. But if you consider how long it's taken to get to where we are with petrol engined sports bikes vs electric. Give electric another 10 years and there'll be so much further forward with the technology.

This is the bike I'm really looking forward to seeing at motorcycle live, especially the tri colour 2022 model. I switched to an electric car a year ago and it's perfect for my usage needs but not everyone's. I only get annoyed with missconceptions about EVs. No personal transport is ever green it just better for the local air quality, batteries lose capacity that just makes a second hand bike like any other so why we expect an EV to remain as new is beyond me, choice will get better with every category and price covered in future, big business sees profile making infrastructure better, we might miss an engine but anyone getting on the road now probably wont ever use a manual box or care what powers the vehicle. Great review now I've not to get carried away because I can't afford any high end sports bike.

UK passed legislation banning all petrol engine motorcycles in 2035 earlier this year, slipped it through whilst their on going tyranny. This has nothing to do with saving the planet, everything to do with control of the people, restricting movement, GPS tracking & data collection. Electric motorcycles will wipe-out freedom, privacy & fun, they'll even be fitted with a remote engine drive cut off so the fuzz can simply turn your ride into a sitting duck!

The torque on this bike is the same as my Peugeot e-208 GT and it's addictive how fast it can go from 0-60, the amount of high powered cars I've smoked at the traffic lights lol, they never seem pleased at the next traffic light. Actually, that range on-track and on-road is similar to what you find on current superbikes (e.g., Panigale 1299 and V4). Regarding the lack of shifting: I believe the engineers could, in fact, include a shiftable gearbox, similar to what they could do in cars. The softer torque curve at take-off makes sense, just as the faster electric cars are all-wheel drive (as are the upcoming trucks, and, for that matter, the 911 Turbo and the Wrangler 392, for the same reason that the Audi Quattro rally editions were so successful back in the day.) I love ICE motorcycles, but, like you, I feel better seeing the development of true e-sportsbikes. It will be fascinating seeing what Ducati comes up with for the race bikes in 2023. The absolute best would be if some clever young future engineer invents a way to run ICE engines on crud from the air, making the exhaust cleaner than the intake. “Ride for the planet” would be the new motto.

Great review! Here are some random factoids that offer answers/insight into some points raised in it. The transfer box is a single speed reduction gear (motor max 12500rpm). RS motor sprocket has one fewer teeth than standard. DC charge cables are thick due to liquid cooling (top spec charging can pull around half a megawatt - if it wasn't for liquid cooling they'd be a lot thicker). 80% max charge due to charging profiles ramping down the current as 100% approaches, the last 20% could take as long as the first 80% so it's discouraged on public chargers (some allow users to request 95%). Yes the price of the bikes is high but consider the total cost of ownership. I've ridden ~65k electric miles and other than the cost of consumables that all bikes require (tyres, pads, fork oil, etc) it's basically zero on engine/fuel systems maintenance, and 2p/mile in fuel. The more you ride, the more you save! I am looking forward to your summer head-to-head video!

~80 miles of overall range means 50 miles before the distraction of range anxiety sets in, that’s way too low, they will get there, performance is obviously good but the weight and range need a bit more work for most to consider. Maybe a belt drive would be less noise and the incorporation of a manual gearbox would be nice. Electric motors do have higher torque low down than petrol combustion, but after the low end power becomes midrange and top end they fade off where the combustion motor comes into its own. A gearbox would make better use of its low down torque. As you stated Chopsy it’s too expensive at the moment and the styling is poo. Great review🤘.

Only charge to 80% because the remaining 20% has to be set aside for KERS. Kinetic energy recycling, switches the polarity in the motor to become a generator thus charging the battery, thats what the remaining 20% is for. Great review as always 👍

This is incorrect. You can charge the bike to 100% no problem. But you can set charging limits on the bike itself so I assume someone before LCR just set it to charge to 80% because from 20% to 80% is where you get the most charge from the time plugged in. Charge rate below 20% and above 80% slows down.

@@notyouraveragebikes4316 maybe your right the charger was left as per last occupant at set to 80%. And maybe you can charger to 100% (according to the charging point) although looking on their website and it’s the specs. The bike does have regenerate maps. The only way this can be achieved is using the motor as a generator by switching the polarity. And if this is taking place there is no way you can charge the battery to 100%, if you could the battery would overheat.

@foxy12304 the bike has a 21.5kwh battery but only "uses" 18.9kwh. A 100% charge will fill the 18.9kwh space, and still leave a bit of battery so that the regen system can still actively work. This is unlike on something like a Tesla where once the battery is 100% charged it drastically limits the amount of braking regeneration available.

If you could charge any Hybrid or EV to 100% this will cause damage to the HV battery modules via induced, excessive heat. no matter what the charging point displays, 60%, 70% etc makes no difference

In California, it’s possible to get it under $17k with state/fed/utility/clean air incentives and rebates. More than the average liter bike, but it’s also quicker than most liter bikes, so the pricing is proportionate to the performance. It’s worth noting of course that it gets less expensive the longer you own it where as a liter bike becomes more expensive over the same period of time, referring specifically to maintenance and fuel cost differences.

also, think there is a limit in the bike itself to charge to 80% only. You can change it in settings (though I've also heard some charge stations limit you to 80%, not in US, but I would NEVER DC fast charge past 90%! (and rarely to that amount, I would probably stick to 80-85% DC fast charges, but MOst of the charges woudl be done overnight at home. plugged into the wall outlet.

Apart from the horrifically expensive, impractical use and really annoying milk float sound, I have a couple of questions. How much would you pay for a second hand 3, 5 or even a 10 year old battery? Is the battery allowed to deteriorate up to 20% within the warranty?

I've stated before, there's absolutely nothing ' environmental saving ' about electric cars or bikes! The electric vehicle hype is, as you say, a bit ridiculous… but don’t forget they do have the potential to reduce air pollution in built up areas which is a properly serious health issue. I still do not believe that replacing a fossil fuel with another fossil fuel is the right way forward. Lithium is horrendous to produce and with current technology the battery packs cannot be recycled fully. The more electric vehicles out there, the faster we'll burn through the stores we have. I'm hoping the answer is either in hydrogen or synthetic fuel. Some of the big oil companies are putting huge money into the synthetic fuels, time will tell if it pays off...

Would love an electric bike to play on but the range is just not enough. You don't want to arrive at a charger with zero charge left cause it can be out of use or whatever. And if it only charges to 80% you only got like 60 miles before you need to charge again. And perhaps a bigger issues is that I usually more or less only ride roads on the country side and that's not exactly where you will find the chargers.

Thank you for posting. Took the liberty to visit their web to price one of their bikes. How should I put this.... YIKES!!! Starts at about $25k, and heated grips, color, and ohlin suspension and you are at over $30k once you include taxes, registration, and destination fees. The bike is good for 1200 cycles (according to the web site) so commuting/daily rider is not really an option unless you only want the bike to last maybe 4 years. If I had to spend that kind of money, it would go towards a Panigale, Streetfighter, maybe an Aprilia, maybe a Gold Wing. Besides, although I am willing to listen to the data, at this point in my life, I am not convinced electric vehicles are greener (or much greener) than dino juice.

Yeah I have ridden a Zero. It’s fast for sure but ultimately left me quite cold. I still get a buzz just from turning my bike on and the engine firing up. Then the gear change or the fun of a quickshifter etc. The rider involvement is all gone. Electric is a commuter option. Go and watch MotoGP live and the sound is amazing it goes right through you. The MotoE is a dreadful whining noise. Awful as a live spectator event and only 5 laps due to battery. Compared to 27 with fuel? And that’s cutting edge tech.
