Returned to bikes after a 20 odd year break (bloody kids) and bought myself a 2008 650 vstrom with 10,000km's on a 10 year old bike. I use it for my daily commute into Brisbane, it sips fuel and goes well when you want it to. Wanted an R Nine T but bugger it i'll run the Strom for a few more years.

Forty years ago, I rode motorcycles. Nothing til last year, when I got a wild hair and scratched the itch. Bought an '09 DL650 with 52,000 miles on it. Lots of commuting miles but lovely shape. I bought it after researching all the different bikes in that class. I went with the many top reviews because I had nothing else to go with. I have never regretted it. Absolutely a superb motorcycle from stem to stern, with only the saddle comfort in question. But, that's probably just me because I don't like to stop, and I'll likely solve that eventually. I installed a 16 tooth sprocket up front and it cruises at 75mph with no issues of vibration or any hint of strain, even with 100lbs of camping gear aboard.

I have a Vstrom650 and use it for exactly what you say, my daily 65 mile commute. Clocked up 15000 miles now in 18 months and it’s not missed a beat. One great feature when doing these kind of miles is the economy, I get 66 to 72 mpg and best of all are the service intervals at 7500 miles, a fair bit more than most bikes. Picked up your channel from TMF MTV, like what I see.

I have done a similar mileage, just over 28000km in 20 months on a GS250. It hasn't missed a beat, and I would be keen to upgrade to a Vstrom650 when I get my full licence in November. I think it would suit my needs and local road conditions perfectly.

I found the stock seat and my rear were at war within 20 minutes. I spent quite a bit on a Russell Daylong saddle. They take a bit of break in to become one with your rear. At this point I can easily do 24 hours in the saddle out of 48 then get right back on. These are great backroad touring bikes. Great range, relaxing, just like a dependable horse to take you town to town.

Great vid! I have a 2017 650XT, same color - LOVE IT! I was quite surrprised at the torque and gear overlap this bike has. As you said, it pulls with great power. I have to ride 5 miles in any direction to hit pavement from my home in SW Colorado and this bike does so well on our unpaved county roads as well as pavement. From various bikes I've ridden, it is the best bike for m needs. I have a dirt bike also, but this "adventure bike" ticks all the boxes for my needs. --Ray

Thanks for this comment. I looked hard at F800GS vs VStrom 650 and found used with 3-8k miles, $6200/8k and went with Strom for the reasons you mentioned. Would like less weight, more power, but... obviously lol those two don't go together, and the additional power of the F850GSA looks too heavy for what I do (actual off road, laying the bike over in snow, etc...). Guess I'll be happy with what I have and maybe wind it out more often. ..kills the MPG though. Oh well.

have one for 2 and a half years now, 24K kms of nice Schwarzwald roads on the clock, absolutely no issues. Being my 1st bike I don't have much comparison, except a 2 hour ride on an MT 07 which I didn't really like (hard seat, snatchy throttle). All in all I am very happy with it. As a bonus info, for who wants to try, the USB plug from the 1050 XT is an almost direct swap with 12 V plug (physically it slots right in but it needs a matching connector). No the need to carry one of those annoying cigarette to usb adapters.

I commend you on your choice. I have a 2006. At 142,000 (trouble free miles) the chain broke and destroyed the engine. I bought a replacement engine with 8,000 miles off of a wreck for $700 in 2010. I have put 137,000 (trouble free) miles on it. It requires shims at 63,000 and again at around 122,000. Other than that it's just been consumables .... tires, oil, filters, chains (I always buy 530 RK chain and sprockets) coolant and brake fluid. I don't even consume oil yet. And I push this little guy fairly hard. I have gone through an FJR, ST1300, Super Tenere all in the meantime as well as BMW 1200RT (I will never own one of them again ... maintenence and reliability nightmare). I don't believe you can go wrong with this choice. Even my Grandson has bought one, a 2018 xt also, to commute to work and short (under 2,000 mile) trips. Just ride, change the oil, and enjoy!,! You won't go wrong.

The biggest problem I'm trying to deal with right now is the loud helmet whacking at highway speeds with the stock windshield. For crying out loud people, do any of you ever check your “facts” before you commend? I have no idea why people keep comparing the V-Strom 650 to a full size GS. It seems that everyone does that. That’s like comparing a 150lbs guy to a 270lbs NFL linebacker. Seriously! I guess that that is smart. I one makes to convince oneself that one has the best ADV bike (which it’s not) then it’s better to compare it to a bike that is way out of it’s weight class and price range. The V-Strom is a nice bike but no it is not a 1200GS or 12050GS for sure. Not even a at 750GS or a 850GS. Which are more in it’s weight and price range. With the basic version of those two bikes not being no where near double or more the price of a V-Strom 650 XT. In fact, the V-Strom 650 XT Adventure is more expensive than a 750GS. But it does come with the cases and crash bars. Sadly it’s way over weight. The XT Adventure (the version I was considering buying) is heavier (528lbs) than a Honda Africa Twin based model with the manual transmission (501 lbs), and only two pounds lighter than the African Twin Adventure (530 lbs). Which has an 1100 cc engine and a tank that holds over a gallon more of gas.If you don’t mind paying more for the AF. When you are a solo female rider traveling the world, weight does matter. Specially when you hit the often lonely dirt roads that sometimes can turn technical. I can’t justify such a heavy bike (even without my gear on it). If weight was not an issued I would pick the AF over the V-Strom. But weight of an adventure bike is an issue. A major one for off roading. Heavier bikes sink faster and deeper into the sand or mud. Good luck getting a 528 lbs bike unstuck from a mud pit, or having to push the thing if it breaks down. If my Tenere 700 is no laughing matter, I can only imagine a bike that is 80 lbs heavier. Before you acuse me of being BMW fan, I like the way they look, but that is it. I would never buy a 1250GS (at just shy of 600lbs with no gear on) to travel the world. I think that those who do that they do it because they want to be like others. The price, size, and weight makes it less than practical for traveling and specially off roading over anything that is not just a basic fire or gravel road. Anything technical and get ready to struggle. Tons of videos of that online. And don’t get me wrong, I am not a V-Strom hater, it is a great little bike. The little bike that could. But for me buying one means spending the money to update the suspension, converting the front wheel to a 21”, if possible the rear wheel to an 18”, and buying some more accessories to make off more off road capable. But by then it would make more sense and cheaper to buy a T7. Hell, even the dual sport Suzuki DR650 would make more sense. And cheaper than any of the the V-Stroms. I almost bought a new V-Strom 650 XT Adventure last year. I had almost given up on buying a Tenere 700. But I was immensely lucky and walked into a Yamaha dealer and found a Tenere 700. Something nearly impossible to do.People are waiting well over six months to have one delivered. Those bikes never see the showroom before they are sold. Mine was still in the shop, just taken out of the box from Japan. Yamaha can not make them fast enough. I paid 9,999 dollars for mine, and people have offered me well over 12 grand. One guy’s offer was a couple hundred short of 15 grand. Crazy! Now, if I had to pick between any GS and the V-Strom, I would pick the V-Strom. It’s a Japanese bike and BMW can not match the reliability of any of the four Japanese bike manufactures. There is no comparison in that respect. In two different owner surveys done 7 years apart, Suzuki came in 3rd and 4th place in reliability, while BMW came in at second to last in reliability. Only beaten in both surveys by CanAm. Hell, a Harley Davison is more reliable. That says a lot. I am still considering buying a based model of the V-Strom 650 and use it as a commuter and save my T7 for my Central and South America trip. Which is why I wanted a T7 to start with.

I had a DL1000XT the other year. Ultimately missed my lightweight ripper street bike and traded off. I have also demo'd the DL650 and after owning the 1000, I think the 45 less pounds weight, the more free-revving eager 650 engine, and a bit less wind noise from the fairings would ultimately have me going with the cast-wheel 650 version in the future for a distance bike. The suspension and brakes on the 1000 were superb, but those things can be upgraded (fork cartridges and shock) on the 650 if one is so inclined.

@@IAmYourReflection The 650 felt 'more' nimble and eager, but it wasn't by a large percentage. Just noticeable. Not to say the 1000 wasn't nimble in its own right, as it was quite maneuverable for the weight and size class. Yet with 45 pounds less, a lighter flywheel and crankshaft, and an eager proven engine, you might find the 650 more entertaining or endearing. It's up to you. All the bikes in my past were basically equipped, so the absence of gadgets wouldn’t bother me. I looked at the 2019 Versys 1000, the left control has so many buttons I wouldn’t have a clue. A gear indicator is not that necessary whereas a fuel gauge is

As an adventure bike, I find that the boxer engine in BMW is hard to service like if you got a clutch that needs to be replaced you have to almost take the whole bike apart, it is a simple job in most bikes like 4 to 10 bolts and you get to the clutch. I'm no engineer but from a perspective of a guy who likes to work on motorcycles it's quite out of reach, engineers should make it easy to work on and consider it. I can see that it might be to lower centre of gravity down but it's at a bigger price.

I had an earlier model DL650 V strom and in hindsight, often wonder why I sold it, great allrounder that it was. I am thinking of going back for seconds, but wonder why anyone would pay for spoked wheels when you can have the trouble free mag version cheaper. I am not sure what other differences there are between the XT and the "standard" model, but personally the less"fruit", the less things there are to go wrong. These bikes are relatively cheap, cheerful, great value for money and do most things well

Love the V Storms . I have a 13 . Not an ounce of problem ever . Rides incredible. It just swallows up road imperfections . How is the new single headlight ? The old double lights like mine illuminate the road at night quite well . Great review . I’m new to your channel & find it fun .

For the road the weeStrom would be most excellent. I contemplated it pretty hard but I bought a different yellow & black 650, 2018 KLR. A bit more dirt minded and I couldn't justify the 701 Husky or an Africa Twin with two road bikes in the garage and a Ms Wolf to rarely take on lil rides.

LCR rides a Wee-Strom, yeah! I have the '12 version, virtually the same bike, and I absolutely love it! (Apart from it being a bit fugly, especially the 19" three spoke front wheel.) Personally I love the way it corners, it's just a joy to ride, so much fun! Still haven't found anything I like better. (Going to demo a 'Scalpel' soon...) Only negatives for me is that she's a bit top heavy at standstill, and the power and brakes are a little bit lacking two up. Enjoyed every minute of this video, especially with commentary like, "Starfleet would be impressed with the mileage you can get out of one of these engines". Lmao! Thanks Chops!

I'm on my 3rd one now, a new 2019 650XT. I always plan on something more exotic but then when it's time to get my wallet out I know the V-Strom 650 ticks a lot of boxes. I've pre ordered the new 1050xt for when I'm back in the UK in February. Can't wait to try it.

I used to love the extreme bikes like GSXR 1000 and Hayabusa but after owning them, you realise that you don't need that much power. My SV 650 was quite adequate and I recently got a bargain on BMW F800R and I love these middleweight commuters.

This bike is very interesting to me. I drive a cruiser bike now. I’m scared to take the jump and buy one. Was thinking about the 1000 as 90% of my driving will have a pillion and long road trips. And also have a bad back wondering if siting straight up will hurt my back after 300+ miles.

I just bought the latest(2022) 650 VStrom XT but it won't arrive for 2 or 3 months yet because, I'm told, they are having problems with materials and, because of the pandemic, people are buying more bikes to get out and about. The reason I got it is because I've never heard a bad word said about them and a couple of friends have them and we go riding together and I can see what they can do. They cost just over $15,000 in Australia. Can anyone advise me about cruise control for the bike. I can't find anywhere that says one is fitted to the new models, but it looked like the guy in this video had one on when he took his hands off the throttle. The 1000 VStrom's have them fitted standard so, if the 650 doesn't I wonder if I can get one from the 1000 fitted to mine. They are essential in my country.
