I've recently been riding the Triumph Speed Twin so I'm sticking with the retro classic theme and trying the 2021 BMW R nineT. How does this classic inspired Boxer Twin compare to the newly revamped Triumph?
Well stick around to find out!

Love an RnineT me, lovely premium feel and love those clocks - when I was in the retro market I just didn’t fancy another boxer engine though (especially the “old” one)…for me the Speed Twin pips it but then I like lazy riding and love the idea of owning Triumphs. Great video again Choppsy - you’re really rather good at this!

Great way to describe this bike as 75% playtime and 25% ride enjoyment, find that exact same ratio when riding my R1250R and at some point I've even asked myself why not just go the extra 25% into a speed triple. especially coming from sport bikes and even more especially on the rare occasion I get dusted by a supernaked 😆

I have the 2021 Scrambler. My first bike ever. I've tested a few other bikes practicing, Honda, Yamaha etc, street bikes. I must say that I love the NineT. Good ride height, enough space for feet when shifting, awesome sound, and above all, the responsiveness through the revs. Not very nice to ride on the highway though since it doesn't have covers. I often get questions and comments about it. My first bike and I hope I will get to give it to my son when he's old enough.

Let's say it, anyone with an eye for design loves the R9T range. It feels like a special bike to ride, and although I enjoyed my Gen 1 Speed Twin it kind of gets lost in the Triumph range with Streets and other Bonnevilles. The R9T seems unique and I love the running characteristics of the Boxer. A keeper!

what kind of riding do you do with these bikes? How long of a ride? I ride a honda monkey and I love doing long rides (200+ miles) but I cannot go faster than 60 mph so that's the limiting factor. But the monkey is super comfortable for all day rides. I wonder if i should get a bigger bike but the weight is intimidating. the monkey is only 220 lbs.
@theultimatef1geek463
@theultimatef1geek463 Жыл бұрын
@@edwardchoe1495 Do not worry about the weight. Its a bit of an issue at crawling speeds but the weight disappears once you get moving. The gyroscopic principle helps to keep your bike upright, so the faster you go the lighter it will feel. Its possible to corner just as good on heavy bikes, and maneuvering through traffic will be a breeze if you get a short wheelbase streetfighter.

The 75/25 assessment makes perfect sense. When the bike is too fast you’ve got to zone in more as opposed to just taking your time to relax and enjoy it. Both types of rides are enjoyable ofcourse but definitely different

I have a 2017 and everything you said was spot on, it's a combination of a retro and a naked bike. There is a lot of aftermarket and customization you can do on the R9T range. The R9T Pure would go up against the Speed Twin the R9T classic/roadster would go against the Thruxton although the Thruxton RS is probably a bit sportier.

The handling on my 2020 Speed twin was abysmal due to the poor quality of the suspension...... A set of YSS shock absorbers and decent progressive fork springs with pre load adjusters transformed the bike. Shouldn't have to do that on a new 12k bike..... The newer Speed Twin with the usd forks are better,I imagine,but don't look as good,or suit the bike,in my opinion.

Actually, I'm not a fan of beMoto, either. They were the only insurance company to decline insuring my 1 year old Ducati - as I only had 1 years NCD (having come back to bikes after a 40 year break)and I didn't have 2 years NCD they 'required' - yet I already had an older BMW insured with them! Both bikes securely garaged. They also sent a threatening letter requesting proof of the previous 1 year NCD for the BMW.....despite getting an email from somebody else at beMoto acknowledging receipt of it! Unbelievable, and I gave them hell as a result, receiving a grudging apology in return. Yeah, naw.......I think they spend too much sponsoring some channels - it was 44 teeth led me to originally insure with them - and their actual coverage and service is decidedly so so. As for the R9T.....yeah, naw.....styling is meh, and I think Ducati finish and detail their bikes better, now. To give just one example, the much vaunted BMW S1000RR, killer bike to ride, but lacklustre, cheapo plastic and stickers everywhere. The older BMW's are better made and finished.

Not ridden the Speed Twin but I have ridden the R9T, and I loved it. Great review. I'm going to have to ride the Speed Twin to see if I concur now but I do believe you've given a pretty accurate judgment. The R9T may be more expensive but you are getting a few things more. That boxer though is such an easy going motor you can ride it just as lazily to enjoy the views as any bike I've ever ridden so not sure i could agree there. One thing you don't touch on though is these bike are not much good at anything other than offering a stylish Sunday ride out. Really just a second bike for enjoying the ride when you're in the mood.

I had exactly the same bike, but new back in the end of 2017. Akrapovic pipes were standard then, no cruise available, but went for the heated grips. Bought a Sargent seat which transformed the comfort (did not look much different from standard, but oh was it better !!). Only other changes were a dart flyscreen and a passenger grab rail from Unit Garage which blended in well. Loved the turn-in on the bike as it has a smaller front wheel than the rest of the range (17 inch) - the urban had a larger front wheel and the scrambler larger still). It has soooo much torque, listening to you ride it brings it all back 🙂. For the models back then, the standard R9T was actually the top of the range bike (bit weird, but that is BMW for you). It was a very special bike to own and ride. Only sold it as I was addicted to changing bikes every year or two for a while !! Thanks for the vid !

Must admit, I prefer the RnineT, to the Speed Twin...........but i'm slightly biased, as I own a R1200R. From what i've found, any factory fitted "Akra" cans, are restricted to normal emissions and noise levels. My advice, buy one with "standard" cans, fit an aftermarket can. Usually it adds about £800 to £1000 to the purchase price for a fitted Akra, after market will cost similar, and you can remove the baffle on after market ones, not usually possible on factory fitted! Great video, as always Chops, keep up the good work.

His comment "Yes it has, the fuel light comes on then you have 60-80km to fill up? 2. Size wise I am 5'7" 30" in seam, fits me nicely? When I sat on the F750GS it felt like a much larger bike & top heavy. I've not sat on the Speed Twin, Seat height 809mm v R nineT seat height 805mm? 3. Wet weight nothing in it really Speed Twin 216kg v R nineT 221Kg + weight would be lower down on the BM I guess. Both bikes are special and we are so lucky to have manufactures producing such awesome machines.

Imagine Chopsy if your partner said "I am only allowing you to have one bike and no more". This bike would be the perfect solution, as you get all these different riding capacities in one bike. The Great Around bike has been found in the R Nine T. And the lack of fuel gauge wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. You would just out of habit, make sure you automatically refuel everyday. And you would do this even more more on longer trips. So ultimately the lack of fuel gauge shouldn't be an issue. Remember, Chopsy there are thousands of R Nine T owners around the world, that are riding their bikes and managing to do it, without a fuel gauge.

And now compare those figures when taking into account final drive ratios and transmissions losses and oops the rr wins in every gear at any speed. Sure this bike is zippy at lower engine speeds, but sportbikes are just geared much shorter so its like being in a lower gear effectively.

I bought the exact same bike new in 2018 , I replaced the front forks at 3200 kms due to knocking noises over bumps , it was perfect until I got to just over 7000 kms & got the same problem again so I had enough if it then & got rid of it after having it just for 6 months , I was disappointed because I liked the bike , it didn’t like the backroads here in Ireland , I bought a 2019 s1000r sport after that & never got a problem great all round bike but that’s gone now for a new busa bought last July & loving it

Got mine about a year ago. It’s a keeper for sure. No maintenance shaft drive is ferah to havle. I probably will keep it till I die. It can be the Swiss Army knife of bikes with simple mods (the scrambler model). You can literally turn it into a bare bones gs for touring and have the best looking urban bike when you simply remove the touring mods. All it takes is 30 minutes to put on and remove the touring mods(wind screen, handlebar riser, peg adjustments) You may want to upgrade the seat as well. I use the unit garage gel seat which both looks better and is much more comfortable.

Loving these Sunday morning videos! I’ve got the Speed Twin, and love it, but didn’t think to try the rNineT. As a larger lumpier person perhaps I should have..

Hi, I don’t own the r nine t any more, I’m two bikes further on now. However, like most of my sells I regret doing so. The r nine t was a great bike. Great in town and the B road. Loads of grunt at the twist of the throttle on an A road too. Best thing has to be the smell in your garage for a couple of hours after you’ve put it away. That air head motor smells of oil and fuel which you don’t get on modern water cooled engines. Fantastic smell ! Only small gripes, and I do mean small, is there a dead space on the front break where the first 10% of movement does nothing. It’s been mentioned by reviewers before. You ride around it just fine though. The other thing is on earlier models (mine being 2016) the posh looking upside down gold forks weren’t fully adjustable, and the rear shock wasn’t very swanky either. Neither matter for B road blasts or A roads. Not at all ! I think the suspension would only need upgrading if you were doing the odd track day (not sure why you’d choose an r nine t for that though) or if you were some what heavier than the bike was designed for. For the record I’m 12-1/2 stone if that helps put some perspective on it. Great bike ! Shaft drive is super refined too.

I have a 2013 1200R roadster and was thinking of upgrading to a nine t. However on the face of it, I can’t see any real reason to (except for the styling). The 1200R is much more versatile, comes with BMW removable luggage for touring and is more comfortable for my pillion. It has all the performance of the nine t and the riding position is more upright (better for my bad back!). I picked it up for less than £5,000 - I reckon it’d cost me an extra 3 - 4,000 to upgrade and all I’d get would be a nicer styling package!

I would imagine that if Triumph put equivalent suspension on the Speed Twin it would be as good, if not better. R nine T owners used to complain about it suspension too until BMW sorted it in 2017. Of course it depends what you want from a bike but I reckon the fact the Trumpy makes more torque and does so 1800 rpm lower gives it bigger grin potential.

I would definitely go for the 9Nine as it is really unique, engaging, beautiful and full of character. The Triumph is a nice machine but it is still stightly asceptic and doesn't handle as well, especially cornering. The Boxer engine also sounds amazing and is a myth.

You hit nail on the head about customizing they are the perfect bike for customising, close to Harley's. Specialist customizer with kits (pier city customs are a supplier I have used many times)

Back to the bike: I rented an Urban GS and was absolutely giddy about the strong, exuberant engine coupled with the terrific handling and brilliant brakes! I decided then and there, I must have one... BUT WHICH VERSION? I must have a tachometer, so that's my minimum requirement. Love this bike---Kudos, BMW!

I'm 5.11 and 17st, I find all the retro Triumph bikes a bit small, except for the 1200 scrams. The 1200 Triumph engine is a peach of a motor, but your right about the handling, when you push on a bit you soon remember that you're on a retro, where as the Bmw you don't, I bought the F900 r I wanted the TFT and all the tec, But the 9T looks the nuts,

Two notes: 1. This is not the base version of the R Nine T lineup, that'd be the Pure. This one is actually the better equipped of all the versions in terms of suspension and brakes. 2. This weighs 5kg more than the Speed Twin (221kg vs 216kg), not 10kg like you said. Your conclusion is exactly the same as mine, though: this is better than the Speed Twin is every single department.

Hi, I have to agree with you about the 75% bike / 25% ride. I have owned an r nine t (top spec 🤐) for a few years now and have ridden the thruxton R which is a cut above the speed twin, and I’d agree the r nine t is more incorrigible than even that. The thruxton R or even the Speed twin behave more lazily like the Moto Guzzi Griso I sold. I loved my Griso (with an aftermarket Italian exhaust) but if you washed it, it would misfire (not the first Italian bike I’ve sold for reliability issues !). I’ve digressed. The reason I mention it is that I wanted a reliable bike to replace the Griso with equaled character. I achieved that, but ended up singing to the r nine t’s tune and lavishing it with straight through Akrapovic exhausts, K&N air filter, Power commander V & a rolling road tune. Yet I bought the r nine t to get me back to grass routes and stop chasing horse power. Now I find my self talking myself down…..when I can ! That said, I love the looks and the engine and the fact that it doesn’t pretend to be a full on Retro, it’s just it’s own fully modifiable entreaty.

Do you still own the r nine t? And if so, are you still satisfied? I have found an E 4 at a good price. I'm thinking about buying it. Is it rideable in the city and on winding roads? Can it also be ridden comfortably?

R9T not the base Chopsy, that’s the Pure, funny you found so sporty, Chaseon2Wheels really didn’t get on with it. I tried my mate’s and the non ABS rear brake kept bothering me, def a bike to ride off the front end as you say. Def a modern retro to go up against the Kwak and FTR1200 etc. Now FTR1200 2021 model on proper tyres?
