You could bring some data into the mix on this subject. With the hyper being a new build. When you change the oil, send it off for analysis. Millers offer the service in the uk. It's £40 though. That way you could see if changing at 100, then again at 600 miles makes any odds in the metal content test results.

I completely agree with the 100/150 mile initial oil change theory Chopsy. It’s something I’ve done for many, many years. I too believe that the most ‘debris’ is generated in those first few miles. The first oil change on my most recent new bike really highlighted how discoloured the factory oil gets in that time too. What I drained out had a very noticeable metallic ‘sheen’ to it, with tiny bits of silicone sealant also present ! Rightly or wrongly, it’s at this point that I drain and refill with fully synthetic, and it’s always worked for me. If Porsche are happy to factory fill their engines with fully synthetic, then I’m very comfortable with my subtle variation. Looking forward to more videos on the Suzuki 👌

However, as mentioned, there are several tests done that don’t show any difference from riding it like you stole it so it might be simply down to a cheaper grade engine oil from factory.

The last engine that I thought about in terms of the running-in procedure was a Buell Ulysses. I simply ran it semi-vigorously for 50 miles, then changed the oil and filter. At zero miles, I warmed it up thoroughly and set off and used about three-quarters of the rev range, never lugging it - hard to do anyway with an XB12X - never holding the throttle 3/4 open for long. Open the throttle, shut it, open it, shut it etc. After the oil and filter change, I ran it normally but didn't red line it. First dealer service was at 1,000 miles. Those bikes have great engines.

Interesting bike & timely vid Chops. I'm running in a Suzuki myself at the mo ironically & up to about 750 miles currently. I believe they use a different type of oil initially but not sure about the filter tbh. However, they obviously change both at 600 miles so highly possible. For my bike the next interval is 7500 miles or 12 months & I was surprised there was no 1000 mile service as I've experienced with previous new Suzuki's. Although, you're still supposed to only use up to 75% of the revs between 600 & 1000 miles. I essential follow the manufacturers guidelines for the fitst 600 miles & then ride it normally after that but I'm still not bouncing it off the redline every 5 mins or mistreating it. With all that said I'm not really sure how much running it in matters these days with modern engines as you say. Although, I definitely think it's good to have at least some mechanical sympathy with a new engine, but it's better to overuse than underuse it too. The golden rules I've always been told are to use all the revs you're supposed to, go up & down the box as much as you can, don't hold it at constant revs for long periods of time & don't load the engine too much by doing top gear roll ons etc from low speed.

There is one common thread amongst advice on run-in, and that is whichever way you do it, engine damage is an extremely rare event. Conclusion - dont worry about it. A lot of demo bikes are loaned out at zero miles and most test riders will open up beyond run-in revs (where revs are not ecu restricted), and i have bought ex demo bikes with no issues. Maybe an issue back in 1970’s but the evidence suggests for modern bikes just ride it however you want. (Go easy on brakes and tyres for first 100 miles of course)

As you say, loads of opinions. I largely mirror your view. Don’t labour it or work it under high/wide open throttle. I tend to use a lower gear than I would once run in so as to not labour but otherwise try to ride spiritedly. Breaks to cool every 50 miles are good for the heat cycling. I don’t tend to idle for any length as that can do more harm than good with piston glazing while running in. I can genuinely feel the engine freeing up. I’ve ran in about 10 new bikes and had no issues but we all do it our own way.

Always enjoy your reviews and many of the topics you bring up so thanks again and safe travels. While I understand the urge to want to take good care of the engine of our beloved investments I'd suggest it's probably best to have a look at the quality of the oil filtration system on your particular bike. Some have very high quality filters and others are very basic. The really basic systems might benefit from an early oil dump but it's doubtful the that the better quality systems need to be ! Having said all that I'll often halve the oil change intervals once we're run in with a few thou' on the clock on the principal that oil and filters are cheap insurance for engine longevity if you are in the habit of keeping your bikes for longish periods of ownership.

Running-in has changed in the last 30 years, and how you run a bike in depends on when your bike was designed. To answer your question Chopsey: modern manufacture don't "run them in", they manufacture them to much finer tolerances (smoother) so it requires very little "running-in" and they are run up at the factory just to check the engine is OK for 30 seconds. "Running-in oil" is only used for OLDER bikes that are not so finely finished from new. This type of oil is THINNER and designed to allow the parts to RUB, hence they are short lived interval. A modern oil will not allow your brand new 1956 BSA to run-in and form the ring\ barrel seal, in that scenario you would be looking for a "running in oil" because you need the parts to rub. To answer the question "why should I run it in", the real answer is Warranty. The ECU knows if you did or did not follow the manual, and so during a Warranty claim it gives them a get-out-claim-free-card. And I know one M1000RR owner who found out the hard way with a blown motor, as BMW said, "we can see you didn't run it in- go away".

It would be nice to know if this is true or somebody from the factory could confirm this. It make sense I mean they don’t put run in oil in them anymore. I believe we get them right from the dealer with synthetic.

Maybe one factor with the the running-in of an engine is not anything to do with how the engine is treated once it's made but the tolerances to which it was built. The running in process is just ensuring that friction parts are given the chance to bed in just in case their tolerances are sub-optimal. Which I guess is why, with modern manufacturing standards, it's nowhere near as critical as it once was.

Think I'll follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than the opinions of randos on the net.

I think a lot of the ‘myths’ are based on much older bikes. Modern bikes just need to be ridden without lugging or thrashing when running in

Perfect timing, Chops. Im soon to pick up a Duke 890r brand new. I've never had a new bike before. So i have many questions and theories about the run-in. I also would like to know what oil the manufacturers use from the factory. I was thinking to use a mineral oil at 300 miles and then fully synthetic At 600. Then another at 1200. After that. I will change oil every 2000 miles. I know that sounds excessive. I've always chamged the oil very early in my bikes, and they've all been good to me. I've never had any major issues with any of my bikes. Does anyone know what the oil viscosity for the 890r is there is europe. I live in a hot tropical country. I think the oil viscosity will be different here. 👍
