Some little facts I read about the Blackstar album; Tony Visconti, the producer of Blackstar along with many other of Bowie's best records, said there were around 15 unreleased tracks from the Blackstar sessions. He also said that Bowie was discussing a follow up record, as he was optimistic about his sickness and assumed that he would have more time. Also, just something I find interesting, throughout the making of Blackstar, Visconti said that he and Bowie found themselves listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar; who would've thought? 'Blackstar' is a star that has died out, it's also a medical term for a type of cancer, which is what Bowie passed away from. Not only does this track discuss Bowie's death, but also his loss in popularity over the years. Blackstar has been highly revered since its release, reasonably so. I'd recommend the entire album, but some of them do tend to be difficult to understand, they are all worth hearing!!

I have this album, but I've only played it a handful of times. I first heard David Bowie when I was a teenager in the 70's and was instantly drawn. He became a sort of wallpaper to my life, his new music and later, films, became a calander to my adolescence and then adulthood. Always there in the background. Then, driving to work one morning in my 50's, the news came on the radio that he had died. I pulled over and just sat there for a while, I was numb. Now in my 60's, I still play his music all the time and it's all still as fresh as when he first released it. But when I play this album I don't listen, I can't hear it, I want to but I can't, something shuts it out. Something is lost forever.

Bowie's influence on popular music of the last fifty years is undeniable. At least half the artists during what was called "New Wave" in the late seventies early eighties were aiming to sound like him in some way or another. A few even pulled it off here and there. Bowie's music maintained an inestimable elegance until the very end, even when the harmonies seemed to break apart in songs like this one. I suspect you'll be listening to his music forty years from now like so many of us today are still listening to his music after forty plus years or more. It's hard to believe he's been gone for over seven years. At any rate, for something from him with a bit more funk and sheer pluck, check out "Sound and Vision" from his 1977 album Low. Find a high fidelity audio version if you can so the subtleties can fully shimmer.

When I got this album Black Star by David Bowie( and I know David from 1991) I knew was ill....and I lso knew this album he stated was his last Masterpiece album to us before he died.....so I went out and bought it not knowing what to expect from the album....then shortly after hearing the album...I heard that he had passed away. I was deeply sad. The album went to No. 5 on the Billboard album charts and stay there fo 3 weeks. The album is brilliant!!! A Masterpiece. I am thrilled to see you react to this wonderful song on the album. Thank you!!!

I have the vinyl sleeve of Black⚫️star 🌟 signed by musician Donny McCaslin, he plays the saxophone on the album and can be heard a lot throughout Lazarus (another beautiful song by Bowie). He told me David was a great man to work with and about the music etc. He plays David's music throughout Blackstar, the music was ALL created by Bowie on Blackstar, but he got 5 musicians to play his music on it! C was here! summer - '23

I’m always haunted by story of how when he showed up to record this video his hate was barely clinging to his head, it was so damaged from cancer treatment. He was so sick and yet he’s sharing his message and art. He was dying throughout the making of the album, these videos and the musical Lazarus, and he did it all anyway..

He was at stage 4 liver cancer when he was singing this! It was his farewell song to his fans! He knew he was dying and thats why it was so dark. When it came out i watched it and i was wondering why it looks so dark. Shortly after it was announced on TV that he had died! I was crying for 3 days! He kept his cancer a secret, and he wanted to record a last album for his fans, which is amazing. They call it his swan song. Thats why he sings: ''Something happened on the day he died. Spirit rose a metre then stepped aside. Somebody else took his place....how many times does an angel fall?........Just go with me. I will take you home. Take your passport and shoes'' .... he died shortly after this video. So he made even his death into a piece of pure art!!! (he went into a local club in New York and hired a Jazz band, thats why you hear elements of Jazz) I dont know how anyone, how anyone, can still do all this and record an album at stage 4 cancer!? But HE could! Thats why there will never be another singer for me who comes anywhere near him. You could also listen to 'Lazarus' on this album. Many thanks for your great review as always. By the way the skull is about the figure Major Tom dying (as he himself was dying). Remember when you watched Space Oddity and Ashes to Ashes, it all related to Major Tom. The song he became famous with was Space Oddity and throughout his whole career it was about Major Tom, (and now he was dying of cancer). So he is singing about his own death, the bright star is turning into a Black Star.

Finally. Someone’s done the very best and most poignant and most beautiful and most mysterious Bowie song. Released just before he died. There’s so much meaning it’s hard to explain but I know I’ll cry. It’s also poignant for me as my mum died within days of this album release. If I can’t see the video and you can that’s enough ❤❤❤ His parting gift was pure art that I’ve still not fathomed out. I’m sure the girl with the tail is significant… 😎

I have been patiently waiting for your reaction to this Masterpiece and I could see you absorbing the music and the video -- I have just a few observations I have come to understand about the video and song --- Blackstar is a nod to Elvis Presley whom David shared a birthday with and he was a HUGE fan of the King - Elvis had a song named Blackstar too about how when you see a blackstar you know your time has come -- Blackstar is a cancer lesion too -- The Spaceman whos skull is encrusted with jewels is of course Major Tom from whom all Davids fame and fortune began -- The black book with the star on it was a guide to stardom a sort of recipe for fame --- If you recognize the digital tones at the end and go back and listen to the end of Space Oddity they are very very similar -- The physical original vinyl album itself has hidden properties too --- I still havent figured out the button eyes but cant ignore the similarity to Coraline the childrens book and movie -- the shaking dance might be how his cancer affected him -- like a uncontrollable dance -- There is way more to explore but one thing that I must insist you do is to listen to Blackstar backwards -- He even hints to do it -- Upside down and turned around -- you will be amazed -- not with any lyrics that are hidden there even- tho I do pick up a few- Its more so how it sounds like another amazing David Bowie masterpiece ! here is the link for you --- kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKe5dniGd6min9E Im not kidding its so amazing and I have been studying it over and over and discover more and more hidden lyrics everytime I listen - maybe someday I will understand his message but that might be a long time from now ---

I just get the feeling that David was offering a glimpse into how needless our worries are. Religious exhortations and dire warnings are no more impactful than scarecrows twitching endlessly in anticipation of what we have no idea. The bottom line is can you inspire someone to be wiser by your mistakes than the mess you made of your life? He really seems to want to reach us but I think he merely left us with the hope that a few would quit believing that knowledge would rain down on them. It won't. Be happy to have lived at a time when Bowie was available. We were lucky.

Glad to see you check this out! Man, the Bowie estate is a joke when it comes to censoring, Bowie never allowed it. Even that Moonage Daydream film was a joke it was a video collage of vids on YT!~ Great reaction as always! I knew this would kick yer ass lol. The entire album is mind blowing. Some think Bowie was into the occult. NO, he was not. When he went thru all that he was coked out it will do that. Bowie studied every religion he could & used imagery from it which as you see is strange. The weird dance was also used in his 1980 vid "Fashion". Enjoy the journey!

I love your reactions! From the same album, Lazarus is a masterpiece. From Aladdin Sane, Panic in Detroit (about the race riots in the us in the 60s). Oh, and you should definitely check out the video of Bowie asking MTV why they didn’t play more videos by black artists in 1983. Has anyone told you about the documentary that came out last year called Moonage Daydream? The creator had access to the entire archive of Bowie’s from his estate, and made Bowie himself the only narrator. It’s beautiful.

Hi Pope! Fantastic reaction :) ! That's why I'm always pleased when you react to an artist you like (especially Bowie, btw) : you're not afraid to show how it emotionaly affects you. It resonates deeply with those of us Bowie fans who heard this song the first time. It reminded me how i personaly reacted at first listen (the confusion, the awe, the excitement, the pleasure and also myriad of questions... which were to find an answer partly - and tragically - 2 days after...). I won't get deeply in the anaysis of the title (you'll find many infos and thoughtful interpretations in the other comments), but let's just say this : imagine you're an internationaly renowned artist, famous for being an avant-garde explorer, always shifting and changing and curious about everything (in short : imagine you're David Bowie). You learn that you'll be dying soon and you're about to begin a new album. Being who you are, you have to make this album the most impenetrable, thought-provoking, deep and hauntingly beautiful of your entire discography. As a parting gift to your fans, as a personal challenge and also as final point of rich career so generations to come will be as amazed as the contemporary one when they discover this work of art even in the distant future. On the day of execution line, David went into this last album knowing his number was up. The last year of recording the album he noticed his voice failing him, and he had started to become very thin. I think some time before he started the album, he knew he was fighting with the big C, and it was terminal, just a matter of when. Blackstar I believe released on his birthday, and a week later he had passed on. I think the video that hit hardest on his mind set, and having to admit he was going to be on the way out, has to be Lazarus.
