@@victorvek5227 so I watched the video and know what they are talking about. In that video, the tongue and groove ceiling was installed under the roof with no air gap. In all the cases that Don put up his laminate floor ceiling, it was interior rooms that had another room above on the next floor. Even the upstairs rooms have attic space above them. So bottom line, you are absolutely correct. If you put up a ceiling below a roof, there has to be an air gap to avoid condensation issues. In our video, Don and I were working in rooms that don't have roof directly overhead, so this hasn't been an issue. This is VERY good information, though! And I hope people read this and consider their situation before doing any work. Thanks for the info!

Alright guys, seriously; had these laminated floors. Took them out( very carefully) in order to refinish the original, beautiful hardwood floor underneath. I too, have these ugly popcorn ceilings throughout the whole 1965 brick rancher I bought cheap. Question is: do I remove the popcorn ceilings and give it a go? Or say, hell with it and put it on over the popcorn? If I put it over the popcorn what do I put up to nail it to?
@ClayCarlino Жыл бұрын
Even though it’s a mess, I’d want to remove the popcorn. You could certainly install furring strips overtop of the popcorn ceiling, but the risk is not being 100% sure what you’re screwing into. And man it would suck if parts start falling after you install everything. If you remove the popcorn you should be able to see the joists and know definitely that everything you put up is securely anchored. Good luck! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

Looking to do this project this weekend. My joists are 24" a part and was going to screw 1x6 across the length of the joists, and then put the laminate flooring perpendicular to the joists. I'm concerned about the 24" distance but perhaps the 1x6 will help and maybe i can cut things in a manner that keeps the ends very close to the support. (and relying on the interlock). Does that sound like it will work? I'm also considering using a manual brad nailer instead of a pneumatic because I do not own, and they seem expensive to rent. Could a manual stanley staple/brad nailer with a 1/2 or 5/8 inch brad work assuming I also use some type of glue along with it? I'm curious your thoughts, and thanks for sharing the project!
@ClayCarlino Жыл бұрын
I would be concerned with the 24” spacing on the joists as well. I like your idea about adding 1x6s. Another thing you could consider would be to add 1x3s or 1x2s perpendicular to the joists. (It may be worth it to get the select choice that’s not warped and twisted!) space them about every 12 to 16 inches apart. Then add the laminate flooring going parallel to the joists by attaching to the 1x3s. That way each piece of flooring is supported at at least 2 places, and you don’t have to cut them to odd lengths just to hit a strip. I’ve never used the stanley brad nailer so I don’t have an opinion on that. What I can say is that a pancake air compressor at harbor freight is not a ton of money to just buy outright. Good luck on your project! Feel free to let me know what you decide and how it goes. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

@ClayCarlino2 жыл бұрын
I flip it to measure the cut so I don’t accidentally cut off the wrong edge. These planks only go together when they’re all oriented the same way, so if you cut off the wrong edge, you ruin the plank. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

It’s held up great for years now! I don’t know what the weather is like in Oklahoma, but if the room you want to do it in is climate controlled, then I can’t image there would be any issues. Why not start and end on a stud so your edges are supported?
@ClayCarlino4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I have an answer: The laminate floor pieces have interlocking edges, but the length is not evenly divisible by the distance between the studs. So the only way to make the pieces start and end on a stud would be to cut almost every one to fit. But then you don't get that nice tight fit created by the interlocking edges, and you're spending a lot more time and effort to do it. The nice thing, though, is that the studs in the ceiling are only about 16" apart. That's not a long unsupported distance for flooring pieces that are usually 48" long. Also, don't forget that once the edges interlock, they do support eachother. Great thought, though! Thanks for commenting!
@thosey20093 жыл бұрын
Can this be put directly over drywall ceiling or should the drywall be removed.
@ClayCarlino3 жыл бұрын
The problem putting it directly over drywall is that the nail MUST go into wood, and its hard to know with 100% certainty with the drywall up. Also you'd need to make sure the brads are long enough to get through the drywall and get into the wood. So while it may be possible to go through drywall and have it work, I wouldn't risk it. So yeah, tear down the drywall first. I know that sucks, but what wouls suck more is if your laminate flooring starts to sag or even worse, fall out! Good luck with your project! Not sure. Typically, laminate flooring does not do well in areas with moisture and condensation. So if you use it in a bathroom, make sure its got decent ventilation. An exhaust fan will probably help. As for what kind of planks, I'm not sure if there's something that would be better for that or not. We were always just looking for the cheapest stuff we could find. Still, you could do some checking to see if anything is recommended for bathrooms. Sorry if that's not terribly helpful. People in a DIY chat have advised .e against using a laminate flooring on the ceiling bc of buckling due to expanding and contracting...even with an expansion gap perimeter. Have you had any issues with that?
@ClayCarlino3 жыл бұрын
We had the same concerns and it's certainly valid, but at this point, that ceiling has been up for a few years with no issues. Furthermore Don did the same thing in his finished basement a couple years before we did this. That area is also holding up just fine. That being said, they are both in climate controlled areas of the house. Neither locations have to suffer wild swings of heat and humidity, so maybe that's why it's held up. I would say that you should only consider this option for an interior room with decent climate control. Otherwise, I would expect expansion and contraction to make a mess of your work. Good luck! Any of the "big box" hardware stores such as Lowes and Home Depot would have everything you need: A pneumatic nail gun (sometimes called a "brad nailer") A pancake style air compressor 1 inch to 1.5 inch nail gun nails (sometimes called "brads") Laminate flooring (also called "floating floor" The flooring is sold in packs of planks. The planks are about 3/8 of an inch thick and can vary in length and width. On average the length will be about 3 feet long and the width is usually about 8 inches. The edges interlock together to form a tight joint as you saw in the video. You should also be aware that often times you do not have to buy the tools you need. Big box hardware stores often have a tool rental counter where you can rent an air compressor and a nail gun. Finally, you should know that air compressors come in many shapes and sizes. A pancake compressor is probably the smallest you can get that will work, but if you get something bigger, that will certainly work as well. (It's just more expensive.) Good luck with your project! Since we went across the furring strips, and since the strips are placed about a foot apart, we didn't have any edges that weren't at least within 10 inches of a strip, so no sag. Hmmm wonder if this could cover ugly popcorn
@ClayCarlino3 жыл бұрын
If you're considering doing this, make sure that the brads you use are long enough to get into real wood like joists or furring strips. The other thing is to make sure when you're nailing that you are actually hitting those joists or furring strips. Thats hard to do if there's and existing ceiling covering in place like a popcorn ceiling. Not impossible, but it definitely adds a layer of difficulty. If you try it feel free to post how it goes! Good luck! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

Hey, I love this idea and it's exactly what my wife would love. We've used laminate for walls before, with awesome results BUT, I have a new problem. I have a four season room (I live in Ohio). The ceiling got wrecked due to a leak (long story). Of course my wife planned to have our nieces baby shower over the house in a couple weeks and, that ceiling needs dealt with. I've been planning on getting rid of the track tile (which is ugly as hell anyway) and wanted to do drywall. Got word that, that's a bad idea because of cracking (don't really use heat in the winter except for special occasions). Long story short, I'm down to joists (24" on center with 8" of insulation between each joist) and need to do something that isn't going to cost an ass load of money. Laminate seems like it but with the temperature swings? It's highly recommended not to do it. However, I can find material for like $.89 a sq. ft. It'd cost me about $400.00 in material (which aint bad). Worth the try? It'll at least look good for the baby shower.
@ClayCarlino4 жыл бұрын
You're not the first person to ask about how well this will hold up. I think it depends on how much the temperature and humidity swings in that room. Personally, I'd go for it. As you said, it's not super expensive and you can have it up in about a day or so. If it doesn't last long term, you haven't lost much time or money. Plus it will look good for the shower. Feel free to let me know what you decide and how it works out. Thanks for sharing your story! Good luck!

If you have already used it on walls, requiring nailing, i presume there was no buckling? Why would it be any different on the ceiling?
@ClayCarlino4 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalant3841 just in case SVF Radio isn't watching this thread anymore, I may be able to answer that. In their original post they did indeed say they had used it on walls. The issue was that the room they were proposing to do the ceiling in is not heated over the winter. So it will have temperature swings from well below freezing up to 80s and 90s F in the summer. (That's assuming its not air conditioned either.) With temperature swings that wide, expansion and contraction of the laminate flooring could be pretty severe and could result in warping or bows or other issues. Hope that helps!

Clay Carlino - yes, I see. So the rooms you have done on ceiling have all been fairly climate controlled?
@ClayCarlino4 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalant3841 yep! Well, technically, this is a project my friend Don has done several times in his house. I helped him that day. How would it be installed on a drywall ceiling? Glued & nailed?
@ClayCarlino5 жыл бұрын
If your ceiling is dry walled, you could nail through the drywall, but I'd MAKE SURE I know where any joists or studs are so you can ensure that your nails are actually going into wood. If you do it this way you should also check the thickness of the drywall so you know what length nails to use. Of course it would probably be better to tear down the drywall and expose the joists and studs that way you can be sure where to nail. That also has the added advantage of giving you a clear view of any wiring that might be in the ceiling that you would want to avoid. Last tip- You will DEFINITELY want a pneumatic nailer- even if you have to rent one. Laminate flooring is REALLY HARD to nail through otherwise! Good luck!

@@janecj9569 ,oh! Okay. Then I'd go in with a stud finder and mark where the joists are. And since its harder to be sure, adding liquid nails or some other adhesive is probably a good idea too. Good luck on your project!

What is cost for an average room.Great work guys.what is color?
@ClayCarlino5 жыл бұрын
That's a hard question to answer. I've seen laminate flooring for lower than 20 bucks a box on clearance, but as high as 50 bucks per box. A box will cover roughly 15 sq.ft. so for a 100 sq.ft. room it would cost about $140.00 in cheap flooring.

Can I used this for a covered porch ceiling or should I use Vinyl?
@ClayCarlino6 жыл бұрын
I've never tried on a porch ceiling. My only concern would be that this kind of flooring can swell or contract based on heat and humidity. Don has used this to do the ceiling in both his kitchen and his basement, and so far he hasn't had any problems. But those are both in climate controlled environments. I suspect that outside you may see warping or bulging over time- especially if you have hot humid summers and cold winters like we do here in Pennsylvania.

That's a good question! one that I can't answer, but good nonetheless! This is something that Don has done on several rooms now and he does it this way. To my knowledge, he's never had any planks come loose, so perhaps the answer is "because it doesn't need it." But I'm working on a project right now where I'm rebuilding my old MAME cabinet, and for what it's worth, even though everything is going together with screws, I'm gluing every piece for extra support. I feel like it's more solid and will stay that way long term. But that's just me... well I guess it's you too!

@@ClayCarlino my concern is by nailing the pieces you will have problems with contraction and expansion of the boards.. when place on the floor it floats and has movement
@ClayCarlino4 жыл бұрын
@@ericyou1828 , I had the same concern. Yes you are absolutely right. These kinds are intended to float to compensate for expansion and contraction. I raised the same concerns with Don who had done this before and all he could say is that in the ceilings he had done previously, it hadn't been a problem. Also, it's been at least a couple years since we did that job, and the ceiling still looks as good as it did then. I don't know why expansion hasn't been a problem, but several of his ceilings have been done this way for years now with no issues. If you decide to try it, cross your fingers and hope to have the same experience.

We're in Pennsylvania. The weather swings pretty wide here. BITTER cold in the winter then hot and humid in the summer. But I wouldn't say that we've RULED OUT expansion, it just hasn't been a problem for us. Don did this in his basement almost 5 years ago, and he hasn't has any issues. The ceiling we did in this video was done about 3 and a half years ago (as of Dec.2019) and it hasn't shown any signs of warping or anything. Still both of these cases are still inside, so that may make a big difference. I'm not sure I would trust it outside. I'm just not sure. Good luck, though!

Hey Clay, first thanks for your video.. very informative. My question is don't you see the nail holes after you nail the showing face of the laminate? and air pressure do you put the compressor? Thanks
@ClayCarlino6 жыл бұрын
Carlos Cano, we're using a brad-nailer in this video. The heads are so tiny you can barely see them at all. I'm not sure what the pressure required is for a bradnailer, but if you are renting one, they can tell you at the tool rental place. Likewise, if you buy a bradnailer, it should say in the instructions. Thanks for commenting! What I do know is that pancake aircompressors aren't very powerful, and just about the only thing they are good for is filling tires and running a bradnailer.

@ClayCarlino5 жыл бұрын
The issue with drywall is that you have to KNOW that the nails are going into wood behind the drywall. I would not trust suspending all that laminate flooring from the ceiling with nothing more than brads in drywall. If you do want to put this up over drywall, I would mark out where the studs are then securely anchor furring strips across the ceiling to nail the laminate flooring to. It would be more work, but I wouldn't trust it otherwise.
