Lamprechtshöhle - the longest passage cave in the world

The Lamprechtshöhle is in St. Martin near Lofer.
The Lamprechtshöhle writes world records - it is one of the longest passage caves in the world! With a total extension of 56 km, the Lamprechtshöhle in St. Martin near Lofer is one of the largest cave systems in Europe. In 1993, Polish speleologists discovered another cave access at an altitude of 2,178 m - the Lamprechtshöhle is considered the longest passage cave in the world.

The visitor's area Lamprecht cave inscriptions in the cave from the year 1822 and 1823 certainly prove the first serious research expeditions. After many disappointing attempts to open up the cave, leased in 1899, the Alpine Association Passau the cave, built in 1904 a researcher hut in front of the cave and opened on July 30, 1905 a showpiece for the general public. 12 visitors came in the opening year. But it quickly became more.
The first visitors did not come because of the cave, but for a completely different reason. It was the electric lighting of the cave - a sensation at the time. The Höhlenbach was taken at the upper end of the Stainerhalle by a small dam and a part of the water passed through a pressure pipeline to a small 52 m lower lying small power plant. Electricity generation was enough to "light the walls and ceilings of the cave in fairy light with 280 colored light bulbs". Only in the winter 1974/1975 the old power supply was given up and a connection to the public net manufactured.
In the show cave area, which is very well developed for visitors, you can explore the Lamprechtshöhle cave on well-walked climbing systems about 700 m. These 700 meters will fill your senses, on 392 steps that will boost your heart rate a bit, the leisure speleologist overcomes a height difference of 70 meters, after you have reached the platform you can enjoy the breathtaking view into the depths experience the Lamprechtshöhle.
In the central part of the show cave, there is a gate in the chancellor's grotto, which separates the show cave from the researcher's section.
Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing; the show cave has a temperature of between 4 ° C and 6 ° C all year round.
