The most accepted theory is that this is the same guy from the born to die era, but just older. She is presented as young because that's how he remembers her because she died young or sth like that. She is everywhere he looks, she haunts him and fills him with regret.

this theory might be true, but I initially thought the old guy was Barrie, song is most likely about him and Lana told he is the strongest guy yet, like she was stronger than all her other men except for him. and how she could 'not break through his world.' she is following him on the streets, swimming being sexy, dancing around him like crazy, but he is cold and don't care, sees right through her.

The man from the music videos is called Mark Mahoney, he is actually considered a “living legend” as far as tattoo artists go. Lana said in an interview Mahoney was one of the first people she knew in L.A., and she was very fond of him. I actually believe he tattooed her although I can’t remember which tattoo she said it was. This is probably why she wanted him in her music videos, he’s everything L.A. cool... ‘down on the west coast, they got their icons’.

The theory about this video that I've heard most in that I believe applies to it is not that it's an older guy younger woman thing, although we get that alot from Lana. He is older and she was his lover from when they were both younger and she died and now she is haunting him and that's why in the scene where the guitar is playing and they are together he looks a little bit younger. I really thought you would figure it out lol. There’s a theory that he is the same born to die, blue jeans and west coast guy. In shades of cool he is remembering her, even her bathing suit is almost the same as the white one in blue jeans. That scene where she is swimming and he sees her but later he is alone again, I think that’s what kinda make me figure it out. And also when he is getting in his car and supposedly Lana is walking down the street and he’s looking but there’s no one there actually, and btw the imagery with butterflies and everything she looks transparent almost heavenly, cause she’s dead already. I love her so much and her music means the world to me, I’m latín and sometimes my English it’s not that good so I apologize if I made a mistake in my explanation.

One thing to consider with the “old guy” thing that she got a lot of critique for, remember the born to do video? Well the young guy in that video is supposed to be the old guy in these videos years on because if you remember she died in the born to die video. If you also notice she is phantom like in the shades of cool video when she’s singing, she’s haunting him and when she’s “physically” there it’s in his head he is reminiscing about her and missing her he sees her everywhere because of the guilt and sadness of her death. The line he calls for me and not for you is symbolic of the fact he misses her his phantom lover and no other woman could fulfil so that’s why he lives in shades of cool and is always blue. Hope this helps it’s just an interpretation! Love these reactions tho x
