Hi Nettie, thanks! I'm curious about the test too, so I can clearly say if anything yellows or behaves weirdly and also if the final varnish really is truly protecting the colours from fading :)

I heard clear gesso was good to prep the wood 24 hours before using gouache. Should all wood be prepped with a wood conditioner for best color results and lasting wood care? Hi! It depends on what you want. I have an "updated" video with a sparrow painting in the thumbnail. On that I actually stopped priming wood. For staining I used inks, waterproof ones work easiest and it looks great on wood panels for a natural background. If you need, I have a detailed video on varnishing too. :) Have fun painting! Gouache is a great medium!

Why did you not use clear gesso instead of varnish on the wood slice as first step??

You can do if you want, but I don't have clear gesso here. You would still need a clear watercolor ground as gesso or varnish are waterproof and watercolor won't work on that surface probably. But you can try. Gouache might work as it's applied thicker.

I think you can, but I have not tried it out. A friend used watercolour on an acrylic base and it seemed to work, so I would just go for it and try if you have the clear gesso on hand. :)
