Try the following: 1. Sand wood preferably by hand as power sanders often leave circular marks or gouges on wood. Always sand with the grain of the wood. 2. Run damp cloth over wood. Let dry. (This causes micro fibers in the wood to raise up allowing for a smoother finish.) 3. sand with finer grit sand paper. 4. Repeat 1-3 until you reach at least 300 grit sandpaper or finer. 5. Use wood scrapers going with the grain of the wood to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. Traditional cabinet makers (pre-power tools) did this when they wanted to put a glass-like finish on their wood craft. They also did it as part of the preparation for putting gold leaf on woodwork.

Cool piece! Unfortunately, 1 coat of the ground on raw wood doesn't fully seal the wood. The best way to work with this technique is: seal the wood with a couple of coats of polycrylic varnish, sanding between layers to smooth any bubbles. After 24 hours then brush on the ground. It will have to be a couple of coats, 1 isn't enough. Then wait at least the 24 hours and then you can paint away. 😁 I used the same ground on a trekell cradle board that I burned (pyrography) my flowers on first. I found out while wc painting during a live that I didn't use enough coats of the wc ground. Lesson learned. 😂

Agreed Val! I have had success with 3 or so layers of the ground without the poly coat, but definitely sand between layers and that'll help it level out too!

Hey girlie!! Watch your channel too- I have a piece I drew on before sealing can I seal it without ruining what I drew already and then seal? Like can I spray fixative let dry then do a couple of coats of sealant or will that not work?

I enjoy watching your art when I’m anxious it’s such a stress reliever. Your art has inspired me to try drawing again and I haven’t done that in years. Would you consider making a kitsune. It would be kinda challenging and might be fun. Thanks for what you do and keep up the beautiful artwork!!

This piece is truly my aesthetic. Love it! I agree with others, same the wood, use more than one coat of the ground.... Maybe even seal it completely with mod podge before the water color ground? Meh.... experimentation is part of art.

I love the textural interest the wood grain creates. I used the Daniel Smith watercolor ground white version on top of an altoids tin to paint the lid. It worked decently well, but you can't really get the same effects as you would on paper with granulation. I guess it's a sacrifice for being able to paint on a surface not really made for watercolors, fun to experiment with though :)
@leighannenight
@leighannenight 5 жыл бұрын
To help with the wood grain effect, you could try adding a layer of clear gesso to the wood and sanding it down smooth before adding the watercolor ground. I haven't tried this but I think it might work. I use sanded down clear gesso to paint oils in wood.

I apologize if this has already been mentioned but if you apply a layer of sanding sealer first, it will seal the wood and fill in the grains. Also it is far cheaper than most wood finishes.

Maybe a little light sanding before applying the ground might get rid of some of that rough texture from the wood? Either way, it turned out great! Love your work!

I love how the running of the paint into the grains of the wood made the character look so much more weathered and distressed than you might have gotten on traditional paper! I'm curious what the results would be if line work was done in pyrography? In the name of Science, I might have to give this a whirl

When you seal the wood the moisture makes the grain expand, which creates channels that the watercolor can “bleed” through. Something you can try is sealing the wood once then lightly sand the surface, and then seal it again. It might help keep the grain in check when you add moisture to it with the watercolor layers.

A good way that I can think of to stop the streaking look with the wood is to take a fine grit sandpaper to the wood before you the the bass stuff on.

Yeah, I noticed that to fully seal the wood, you needed the ground to cure for at least 24 hours. Something I've also done is use sandpaper to smooth down the surface.

I think if you do multiple layers of the ground and sand between layers, it might fill in the grain enough that the paint doesn't follow the grooves of the wood texture.

I've been experimenting with this recently, too. I've been doing two layers of transparent ground (12 hours dry time between layers) and then lightly sanding before painting. Makes inking very pleasant and haven't had any paint following the grain. The ground does lose transparency if you apply it too thickly, though.

Awesome work! Just curious, it looks like you have good control over the fine details with the white acrylic at the end - why not do the line work with a brush as well? In my experience, it's easier than fighting the wood grain with a micron felt-tip.
@mikuenjoyerXD

Im guessing because it needs to be waterproof? And its hard to have control with a brush doing linework
@zachreddy

You can get waterproof india or acrylic ink. I know it takes a bit to get used to at first, but you've already got a lot of the brush skills to do it, and it might make your next time a bit easier. Of course, the best tool is whatever feels most comfortable to you in the moment. Your work is gorgeous either way!

If you try again, use a coat of clear Gesso first, maybe two, sand down a bit, then at least two coats of watercolour ground, lightly sand inbetween coats and the final coat and all should be good :)

Thoughts on the wood grain thing influencing the paint: what if you sanded the wood as smooth as you could before applying the ground? Water does follow the path of least resistance so if you get rid of the grooves then it shouldn't do it?
