I had that vintage Lance and experienced the same problem. The flimsy metal bracket under the aluminum skin is pathetic. I took off the siding from each side. Installed pressure treated wood both for the horizontal plates and sistered in new studs. Then I installed angle iron bracing both inside and under the camper at the tie down points. Then installed new aluminum siding. The factory tie down work was laughable. Get a little moisture in the siding and rot quickly takes over.

The same thing happened to my 2000 Angler slide in camper. Ripped out all 4 tie down points over time. I wouldn't buy these again for this camper. The camper mfg just didn't build tie down points strong enough and the spring tension eventually tears those connection points out even when fastguns are correctly adjusted.

I felt my front rings were easy to rip out. Good idea with the jack attachment

I was wondering about the roof clearance too . I had a 92 Lance on my 2003 super duty and it would hit when I crossed one of those hellacious bridge bumps , I added some wood under it . I just purchased a 1999 Northstar 10 1/2 foot camper and it was even worse . I had to add about 5 “ underneath to give me a comfortable to me , 3 inches between cab roof and camper . I had the same issue as you on the front tie down and went , like you , to the bracket with an I - bolt . I may lower the camper a tad .

I used plywood to create a 3" lift under the camper, took care of the cab over issues.

You're securing it to the camper itself.

@@FloatingCabinLife I've seen some folk put foam wedges wrapped in rain-proof canvas to go between the camper & the truck's roof+rear window area. Thanks for posting!
@michaelwest45252 жыл бұрын
They used to make an inflatable pillow to go in between , also I still have a pair of new shock absorbers that mount to the camper and door pillar of the truck . I never used them because I wasn’t anxious to drill the holes necessary , however the more I think of it , the pillow may not be a bad idea .

Thanks for the information. Ive got the same truck and looking for a camper, never owned a cabover before. What mileage do you see? Good boy Ben! ;)

Hi Jay... My 2006 Dually is excellent. I got 13 MPG, the same as without the lead. Its great!

@@FloatingCabinLife my 7.3 got better gas mileage, it was an 01, but this newer truck runs, rides, pulls, amd shifts better! I'm excited to get it set up with a camper and get adventuring! We may go with a tow behind though, my better half is a little claustrophobic and the thought of sleeping up in the bunk seems a little too close for comfort for her. Either way, we're getting closer to adventures! Thanks for your videos, very informative and im sure will help us a lot of we get the cab over. :) wondering where you find your campsites, you permanently purchase them? Ive seen camp memberships, but nothing where you can actually own the spot. Thanks again!

Yeah, you don't use the tie downs to hold the truck camper down.
@FloatingCabinLife4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I didn't understand the proper way to use them. The guy I bought the lance from said crank them down as tight as you can.
@georgethomaa224 жыл бұрын
Make sure you are using spring loaded turnbuckles. They should be tightened to the spring tension point. This way, as your camper pulls against the shift; the spring in the turnbuckle lessens the force to the camper tie down point.
@GradiorDignus Жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? That’s all they do.
@GradiorDignus Жыл бұрын
That’s a good plan to fix it. That’ll work just fine

@@GradiorDignus The weight of the camper is what keeps it down, all the tie-downs do is keep the camper oriented correctly.

I had the same EXACT issue with a used ELKHORN same size when i bought it. i had to take the skin off and reinforce the tie down points with metal L brackets. Sad how crappy they engineered those tie down points. Just wood with some staples. The bigger issue with your lippert component tie down turnbuckles is being sure the spring loaded ones are up front and the internal dampened ones are in the back. I made a video of it several years ago that might be helpful...kzbin.info/www/bejne/pafUYn93pbulmac
