Meet the New King (for Half the Price): Bookoo vs Acaia

The Acaia Lunar has long been the golden standard for coffee scales. Fetching a meaty pricetag of over $250, it certainly is a lot to swallow, but has demanded the price for many years. Finally, a contender has arisen, matching and even surpassing the build quality of the lunar, the Bookoo scale offers the same precision at half the cost.
What do you think of this new player in the market? And do you think others will follow suit?
*note- the lunar shows 100g with the calibration unit in the b roll. This was filmed after the video. During filming, it was showing 100.1g, which is why I said they both needed calibration. The Bookoo was not calibrated to the Acaia weight.

to be SUPER CLEAR because it seems to be going over some heads: I am NOT saying you get loads more with BooKoo. I'm saying SIMPLY you get at WORST the same quality/experience and at BEST potentially slightly higher for HALF the price. So, if you feel the need to point out these changes aren't massive, yes, I know. It's not about one being massively better. It's the fact these scales can be made with similar (or better) manufacturing AND cost half the price while also not just ripping off a design. ALSO, I love my Acaia scales. I have spent north of $1000 on them. I use them often. The Acaia is not now "bad." This video is to shine a light on a company that has found a better way to construct scales and will hopefully cause other companies to implement these building designs into cheaper and more affordable units for everyone to access quality products without exorbitant prices. Is $125 the end game? Of course not. But it is 50% lower!!! That's a start. Thanks for watching!

I do think it is a good way to let Acaia know, that there is competition, and you need to up your game to survive.

I think value to money is a very important thing to point out, and I appreciate you making videos like this. Even for those of us that can afford “end game” products, the value play is an important consideration. For most of your viewers, getting 95% of the capabilities for 50% of the cost is big deal. I also have several of the scales you mentioned, including the BooKoo, and I concur with your conclusions. One last thing related to responsiveness using the calibration weight. Did you set the “noise filter” to zero before testing? That slows down the perceived responsiveness a lot.

I will say it's worth noting that having the usb port on a daughterboard can be a good thing. USB C ports aren't the most durable things and being able to replace a little daughterboard rather than trying to solder a new usb C port to an otherwise functioning board. As for the build, while the machining of the bookoo does seem nice, it *looks* like it's just different strategies for manufacturing altogether. I will say, the bookoo is definitely something i've been considering, having put up with an aging hario scale for years now, looking forward to a tier list!

Great video ! a tierlist should be very interesting. I know it’s a bit lot nerdy, but as a former calibration lab equipment, I’m interested to see the difference of the 100g weight in the 4 corners vs the middle. It’s a test we do when we’re testing laboratory scale. If the difference between a corner and the middle is too big, the scale not passed the test. Also repetitive mesures, like 10 times could be interesting, for me and calibration guys :) A suggestion for the next scale review video ;)
@johnadams9314
@johnadams9314 2 ай бұрын
I have the bookoo so I just did this test. I put a 100g calibration weight in each of the four corners (though for the bottom two corners I moved it slightly further up because it was activating the buttons, which of itself is interesting to know) it measured exactly 100.0g in all locations. I then repeatedly measured it in the centre (I lost count how many times but more than 10) and varied the time between measurements, it measured 100.0 every time. Edited to add: The calibration weight is the one that I calibrated the scale with when I received it, and to confirm I have no connection with bookoo other than as a customer of both the scale and the pressure monitor.

I would argue that, for the sake of repairability, having a separate daughter board for the USB port is better. If your port breaks, that’s a much cheaper repair than the entire mainboard. But that’s pretty much the only point I’d give to the Acaia

@@KennethWodiskato a certain degree yes, though desoldering and resoldering a port on a small daughterboard with few other components is also far less risky than doing the same directly on the motherboard, so the modular design is still a win for repairability. Thanks, good critical view of both sets of scales. not ripping them apart by critiquing them either, but simply pointing out how things are, and that the price points for an item like this are to a degree over the top. Captive market - even niche maybe means they can get the most profit with minimal outlay. That Bookoo scale, even though smaller, may actually ring alarm bells with Acaia. It does exactly the same and is literally on point being far cheaper,

I am really enjoying my Normcore V3 espresso scale that I got for half the price of the bookoo at only $59. It’s all aluminum and has a very planted feel due to its weight. It has a very aesthetic angled screen on the front like that one scale that timemore makes. The oversized silicone covers stay in place unlike all of those small pads that most scales provide. I highly recommend every one to give it a look and see for themselves.

Been to UK and Malta in my carry on for work trips, since coffee is hit or miss when traveling and I like making coffee at my hotel before work (Aeropress). The premium scales definitely FEEL nicer, but as was alluded to in the video, the guts are not a hard problem to solve for anyone. I do wish mine was about an inch narrower and shallower, but no big deal. It works for espresso, v60, Aeropress, my vac pot, bigass vintage chemex, and I use it to pre/post my roast batches. Maybe I’ll get something nicer if it dies someday.

Acaia has never been a king of anything other than overcharging their customers for a rather basic thing, so I fully agree someone could easily replicate it for 1/3 of the price. There been many other scales with same accuracy at a fraction for many years but didn’t have the marketing or design behind them. I have one that I had basically as long as Acaia been out and it’s been drowned in water and espresso and still works and it was out long before Acaia made an espresso scale, it’s Ui is questionable but it still works. It’s good to see more and more taking on Acaia and at more reasonable prices and not ripping their customers to nearly the same extent.

Love you Lance, a few thoughts on this vid and future electronics videos: I don't think having a place machined into the aluminum for the PCB is necessary at all. It's a little unfair to Acaia to imply that for some reason that's needed. The Acaia board is in a much larger enclosure. Regarding the boards: Both have custom PCBs designed to fit in the enclosure. You can tell in the Acaia by the bottom left/right cutouts so it fits in the rounded enclosure edges, and by the notch at the top of the board to provide some separation from the load cell. Also from the Acaia branding on the board itself. So, if they both have custom shaped boards designed to fit in the enclosures, it's a little odd to imply the BooKoo PCB being L shaped is somehow 'nicer' or higher quality in and of itself. Some actual "nice" features that should be tested for, or mentioned if possible: 1) No use handwaving about "this might be better because it has a coating" when there are many, many factors that go into waterproofing a whole device. Which is why in the electronics industry we have actual standardized tests (the IP ratings). If you want to get creative you can even test for some of these IP ratings yourself at home. Most IP ratings are not hard to replicate the test setup. . 2) Scientific scales are not necessarily optimized for latency. These "fancy" coffee scales are. As an electronics engineer I can promise you that a LOT of the electronic hardware & software effort is about optimizing the hardware and software design to minimize the latency between different vendor components, in the hardware and software design, so using it feels more responsive. The biggest different to me using a fancy coffee scale vs a cheap one is not the accuracy difference. It's the work that went into optimizing the latency/responsiveness so that the fancy one works so much better in a dynamic situation like during an espresso shot. You seemed to breeze over the fact the latency was worse on the BuKu, but for over $100 that's a big deal to me. For over $100 on a NEW competitor product I want to see the SAME or BETTER latency, not worse. Especially if the broader video claim is that the BooKoo is at least as good quality wise. . 3) All three of these require a lot of work to optimize for. You should mention the actual size of the battery in mAh and what the advertised battery life is. You can easily estimate the active power draw by just seeing how much the battery drains in a set time period while you're actively using it. Charge time matters too - do these ship with a charging brick and what is the wattage? Can I get a week long charge in 2 minutes or 30 minutes? A "fancier" system will draw significantly less power when in use, draw less power while at rest, and will have faster charging times due to more expensive power electronics hardware, and a more complicated BMS software package. All of these things are things I want to know when paying smartphone prices for a coffee scale. . 4) > Admittedly this one is less important, but for these prices having a near instant boot up is what I'd want - and it is what the Acaia *almost* provides. From the video you can see the Acaia boot up time is almost exactly 2 seconds, and the BooKoo seems at least 2 or 3 times as bad? The camera cuts away so its hard to tell exactly how much worse but its definitely way slower. The part where it's scrolling "bookoo" and showing a number you seemed to gloss over as just something that it does, but actually that's really not great. What that *actually* is is a very slow boot sequence. Thats not what I want from a $100+ coffee scale. It should be as near instant as possible. Similarly to 2) and 3), this is something that folks building high quality electronics spend a lot of time and energy optimizing because it does make an impact on the user experience.

Awesome. Need more innovation to push the industry to a more affordable entry point for newcomers. That being said, I love my black mirror but its a little big for espresso so I mainly use my $13 temu scale for espresso now. Its not as quick as the black mirror, but it also works good enough for my day to day espresso shots (also comes with an attached usb c cover).

I had an Acaia Lunar to replace my $12 Weightman amazon scale. I honestly didn't notice a single quality of life upgrade from it other than pretty animations for numbers. In fact, I much prefer the physical buttons on my weightman. Resold the Lunar and I have zero regrets going back to my Weightman. Trust me when I say, you don't need any of this shit. If your scale can read time and weight, you're good to go. Your $12 Weightman is more than enough.

Just got one a week ago to pair with my Decent. I was using the Decent scale which I never liked. It finally crapped out on me so I could justify ending that poor relationship. I have a Pearl and it’s great but never wowed me so I was apprehensive spending big for the Lunar scale. Decided to give the Bookoo a shot and so far so good. Worlds better than the Decent scale. Had to update the firmware in the decent for it to read it but otherwise it’s been great.

Acaia still awesome. Feels more premium, both in feel and price haha. Great gifting to a coffee hobbyist. If i had to pick a scale for myself starting out id invest in the bookoo or the timemore nano.

Hi Lance. From $500 to $1000, what espresso machine do you recommend me to get? After 3 years making espresso with cheap espresso machine my wife wants to buy me a quality espresso machine. Me and my wife love your channel so much. She is a scientist and every time you talk about those crazy numbers she smile 🥰. I am eyeing on the Stone espresso machine but we prefer your recommendation. Much love from NJ. Thank you 🙏🏽

With advancements in wireless charging, I think it would be very beneficial for manufacturers to ditch the external port to make a fully sealed scale for espresso drip tray use.

You can test the accuracy of any scale by dropping a dollar bill onto it. If it reads 1 gram, your scale, regardless of price, is okay for coffees. Finding cheap scales at thrift stores for example.

Worth noting that on the PCB shape, this will have no impact on operation. But will on packaging (how small you can make the scales) and on waste in production. Those square PCBs will have almost 0 waste when cut out of a sheet of PCB stock material. The L shape will not tesselate perfectly and will have much more waste. I also suspect that the notch on the Bookoo is not there for alignment, but for clearance for the load cell to flex. This construction means you can have thicker material where you need it to improve rigidity, but with a smaller form factor. Again, this requires extra steps in production with extra waste. Design decisions were made on both of them. And I think there's perfectly reasonable reasons for both. At the end of the day, people should buy the scale that fits their needs & price point. I don't think there's a whole lot here that truly differentiates in quality except maybe the conformal coating. That's great, because it makes the bookoo fantastic value on the face of it. But you aren't necessarily getting more for less imo.
