For clarity, the luck stat of a servant in Fate isn't talking about conventional luck but more of a measure of how much they could screw destiny/prophecy in their legend. For Saber, while Merlin prophecised that Britain would fall and it did in the end, Saber managed to hold off said fated destruction for about two decades. Cu, on the other hand, was destined for glory and a short life which he didn't manage to defy at all. Thus Saber has high luck Cu has low luck. Thus Saber with high luck and instinct manages to partially dodge Gae Bolg's conceptual cause and effect reversal because said cause and effect manipulation slightly resembles destiny/prophecy.

chaostomb Funny enough, it was the other way around. Cu had a pretty good amount of opportunities to get out of his prophecy. The Morrigan was willing to give him immortality during the Tain Bo Cualigne, not to mention he could have stayed in the Land of Shadows with his teacher before that were even happened. The only reason why he died was because he threw away those options himself. He died because he want to keep that prophecy regardless of how shity it is. Arturia on the other hand was destined to fail from the very beginning to prevent Camelot from falling. It was so predestined that it was a time locked event, meaning that all across time and space not a single timeline didn't have Camelot falling.

@@FallenHalfWingedWolf Archer blocked the Soaring Spear, not the Barbed Spear. The Barbed Spear is what reverses causality, while the Soaring Spear is just a really powerful AOE attack. Archer knew about the Barbed Spear and so made sure that he stayed out of range as much as possible. Once Lancer realized what he was doing, he switched to the Soaring Spear for its greater range which Archer managed to barely block because Rho Aias is particularly strong against projectile attacks.

Well, i can kinda explain how EMIYA blocked gáe bolg, he used/copied Rho Aias, which is a conceptual NP. Its origin is that it was a shield that blocked the strongest thrown spear, which was thrown by Hector. So because of that act, it became the conceptual defense against any thrown weapon, which was why it last so long against Gate of Babylon in Kalied. But its EMIYA, so his shield is weaker than the original, if it was the original, it could've just completely stop Gáe Bolg

Plus the thrown version of Gae Bolg loose his ability to reverse the nature of causality, but have the ability "No matter how many times it is dodged, it will strike the enemy" (too lazy to write). So the thrown version is very possible to block It, especially with Rho Aias wich is the absolute defense against any thrown weapon

Getting struck by lightning could be considered luck, same as winning the lottery. The higher your luck just the more varied and wild stuff is that will happen. That is if luck scales like the other stats. which E would be like 10 times that of a normal human.

Protection from Arrows and Battle Continuation make this Son of a gun nearly IMPOSSIBLE to kill in Fate Grand Order. He got shafted into being a 3* servant (so he has lower stats than those of a higher ranking), but he is EASILY one of the best servants in the game. If not the best.

Vlood Xavier I just looked. Lancer Cu has a SMALL advantage in that his Protection from Arrows protects him from one more hit than Alter's does. Alter also has Madness of Spirits which reduces enemy attack (and thus how much damage he takes) but he can't heal back whatever hits he DOES eat without help like Lancer Cu can with Disengage. It's a toss-up.

Honestly, if the Saber and Archer had been anyone but Arturia and EMIYA (and didn't have Kirei as a master) Cu would've won hands down (except maybe against Berserker). The only reason Arturia survived was two-fold: Luck represents the servent's ability to defy Fate and she had an A rank in instinct which is pretty much precognition and negates the penalties of any auditory or visual interference. On EMIYA's case, he only got away by turning the last layer of the Aias into a Broken Phantasm returning the Shield to its original rank (as his tracings are one rank lower) without doing so the Spear would've most likely pierced the last layer and skewered him to the ground. Edit: I've seen mentions of the whole Cu v Herk in the replies and thought I'd add that it was confirmed in Comptiq 2006-03 issue - Fate Dojo Q & A that Lancer Cu, while disadvantageous, would be able to fight and potentially kill Herk by temporarily boosting Gae Bolgs rank to A with Runes.

Nasu Confirmed if Bazett was alive with Cu she would have won the war, the only real threat would be herc at that point. But Cu has things that can hurt Herc and Bazett would probably deal with Illya at that time. So yes Kirei is just the worst master ever

@@swaythegod5812 be careful when you say that. Because if you say that if it should have been like his legend. Artoria can spam excalibur, wipe out the entire city in a single swing+ and guarantee victory (such is the common myth of a sword of victory/light). There's as well the fact she should have her scabbard which makes her immortal but fate obviously doesn't want that. His transformation is something unique to his berserker self. As much as it should have been a noble phantasm, though I don't think it would change enough for it to be dangerous if they do get his spear away from him somehow. His spells aren't as great as medea. Medea's are far stronger. Though he does use runes which are better in his case. Though you are right that it's stronger then those of a magus. Issue is saber is pretty much immune from magecraft. Heck even medea struggles to even scratch her because of it. Oddly, divinity in fate just causes certain ability to fail. Like protection from arrows don't work against people with divinity because their attacks can't be dictated by non divine beings etc. Though going by demi god thing Arthur is a dragon and one that causes a worldly scale calamity so... again this is more fate lore issues. Though I fully agree, in fate stay night he got the short end of the stick since he isn't getting to show off like he should. His a lot more powerful and should be able to do a lot more harm against many servants in fate. And issue is Gilgamesh is special to Nasu. So he gets to show off.

One of many things I would like to mention is that Cu was heavily nerfed for a multitude of reasons, and especially against his fight with Saber. His Gae Bolg attack against was also held back by Kirie’s command seal on Cu, because Cu was not allowed to defeat an enemy in their first encounter.

In fact, it's part of the established Fate parameters. The higher your Luck stat means that your fate or your destiny favors you. Basically a minor Fate Manipulation.

Something often over looked about Gae Bolg is even if you dodge the blow to the heart via luck it still strikes you in the cheat and does damage. When combined with it's crazy low mana cost even a enemy with high luck can just be poked to death. Also it does damage based on how tough the enemy is + a set amount. So the tougher they are the more damage they take.

Actually I have to disagree with you about how Rho Aos shouldn't be able to block lancers thrown spear. In the particular legend about the shield of Ajax, that shield is used to block an unblockable thrown javelin, so Rho Aus would gain a conceptual boost when used against ranged weapons such a Lancers second noble phantasm. If anything, the anime overstated it's ability against the shield of Ajax as the only ranged weapons that could get through 6 petals should have been the spear of Hector, Durindana.

Rho Arias was a shield used to block a spear thrown by Hector during Troyan war and it blocked the spear. Thus it has a legend of blocking Javelins and Spears, this manifesting as a noble phantasm, even de-ranked a lot since it was just a projection mande by EMIYA, it still has some of it's original qualities and so it blocking Gae Bolg isn't that much of a stretch.

You should mention there are limits to the gae blog. Like it has an unspecified range for its pierce the heart effect. Also, if you can rewrite fate yourself, like a divine being, you also have an advantage in blocking the gae bolg.

It doesn't seem anyone is talking about this, so I'll explain a little bit. The reason Saber survived Gae Bolg is because her absurdly high luck meant the "spear that always pierces/strikes the opponent's heart" only GRAZED her heart. Technically it did hit her heart, but only barely. Understandably, this is still a massive wound, but her durability as a servant along with her healing abilities mean that it wasn't lethal.

It was her Luck and Instinct at the same time which allowed her to survive so, unless the Servant in question has an absurdly high Luck Stat, then it won't be something that can be easily done by most other Servants. Just as a tidbit of info, Saber only had B rank Luck under Shirou

Well the thing about the Luck stat in Fate is it basiclly the ability/shows the likelyhood of defying fate itself. For exampe if you would die from something because it is fate aka a law in existence itself and undoubtly a certain death/end. Than the luck stat comes into play and if high enough you can defy said outcome fate that the world throws at you.

Well the animation had explanations on how they survived fighting him. The encounters took a lot out of Saber and Archer. It was not a walk in the park. Plus Saber was freshly summoned in her fight running at full tilt. It was after that she was never really at full strength because of Shiro. He had her swords sheath which prevented her most powerful defense move from basically anything plus healing factor.

3:24 It may be undodgable but not unblockable, unless you are mixing up the two NPs. Rho Aias is set by the story to be able to block all physical ranged attack. It was the strongest spear against the strongest shield type of duel, which I think was an intentional setup by the creator of the story. The outcome in this case does not require additional explanation -- unlike Saber surviving Cu Chulainn's first NP. I was slightly disappointed to find out the explanation never ended up being given in the LN.

Funny that you mentioned runes. In the clip you showed, he used the correct rune (Kenaz, the torch of life) to set the house on fire, while in the FGO game, he uses a wrong one to set something on fire (Ansuz, the rune of the ancestral gods, and is used for aid in any forms of communication).

All Lancers are powerful and can win against their opponents. However what we saw in the Fate series is that what hinders them is the luck status and their masters examples are Kayneth who didn’t have trust in his servant and Kirei who improperly used Cu Chulainn to only survey the other servants then retreat only using half strength

i just realized that by technicalities the reason why gae bolg didn't kill saber was the combination of two things A. luck and B. her using excalibur to block the attack and since the title of the sword is quite literally "the sword of promised victory" it didn't kill her just wound

I'm waaayyy late to the party but if I recall. Her luck stat was high enough to have Gae Bolg miss, but in Cu's history he's regarded as *extremely* unlucky. He goes to play with the boys and accidentally ends up challenging the entire group. Gets invited to the Kings dinner and the king *forgets* and let's his dog out. Cu kills the dog and has to replace it. Cu is told the prophecy and before the prophecy is finished he already took up arms thus guaranteeing him a young death. He can't keep his own son. He kills his own son in battle and finds out as his son is dying. The list goes on and on and onnnn. I mean his history is just unlucky as hell from the start lol. Rho Aias didn’t exactly nullify Gae Bolg. If Archer wasn’t able to mass project Noble Phantasms, he would have lost Rho Aias permanently along with almost being killed. Although it’s not shown as much in the anime, in the VN, Archer is badly wounded with his arm barely being attached his his body

If you look at the Lancers stats they have an E rank in luck. So what you say is actually true about having a bad luck ability. They even poke a lot of fun at this in Carnival Phantasm where Lancer is just constantly dealing with bad luck situations. This is also why Lancer in Fate Zero had the worst luck too.

"Reverses Cause and Effect", don't think of it as too literally. Instead think of it as this: 1) Gae Bolg is thrust. 2) The spear hits or misses. 3) The Cause/Effect is switched if it comes into contact with the other person/their possessions, making the strike appear in front of the heart/chest area. 4) The spear's 2nd hit is accelerating at the heart, but if you move back fast enough you can probably dodge. So imagine two separate strikes at the same time, once the lance comes into contact with the target. Artoria's Luck is high enough, combined with her intuition to make her decide to dodge back at that "exact moment". Not really. Once the technique is activated, it has already pierced the opponent's heart. The piercing of the heart is the effect of the technique. How the spear hits the opponent is irrelevant and just an aftereffect. If you are in it's range when the technique is activated (and you don't have great luck) you will die, no matter how far you escape.

It makes it so the effect(the spear pierces the heart) happens before the cause(you thrust the spear). Technically it is supposed to be unblockable and undodgable because the spear already pierced you heart before he even attacks you. Artoria's luck gave her a semi-plot armor that made her able to evade the strike that already pierce her heart.

You can resist Gae Bolg's curse with high Luck. Luck in the fate-verse is basically 'your ability to resist fate.' And what is causality reversal if not fate? This is why Saber was able to mitigate the effects of the Gae Bolg... but even then she couldn't avoid it entirely... her high luck only moved the curse away from her heart. Archer was able to block Gae Bolg, because of his choice of noble phantasm. Rho Aius is among the most famous and most powerful shields in lore... and is especially well known for blocking projectiles. Archer implies it could even stop Gungnir, another lance with a famous fate altering legend attached to it (Any battle where odin threw that lance was declared a victory.) But again... even Rho Aius wasn't enough to fully mitigate the effect, having destroyed most of his arm (and mana supply) in order to block it. And all that... was accomplished only after turning the shield into a Broken Phantasm... so...

The throwing version also doesn't carry the same heart piercing-effect as the piercing version. It's just really, really strong. And, as pointed out, it took everything Archer had to just barely block the attack with Rhoa Aias, which is a really strong shield itself.

Rho Aias did exactly what it's legend says it should be able to do. The ONLY spear said to be able to pierce to the final layer is Durindana Pilum. If anything Gae Bolg should have pierced to the penultimate layer and no farther.

bcfb21 Gil actually didn't lose to Emiya, if you are referring to UBW, he was only wounded by Shirou, and then sucked in by the holy grail. Just like how Archer didn't actually lose to Shirou either, the difference between servant and a normal human is way too big. Shirou already ran out Rin's mana for one, so he would have lost anyway, and had Gil used Ea there would have been no fight. The only time Gilgamesh actually lost was against Avalon

a bit late but luck state basically is defying fate or density don't remember what luck archer had but I know saber had A+ while every lancer has E for some reason. so luck state is basically the way that OHKO can be withstood. so saber gets a pass for beating it .... now idea how archer did tho

On Archer and Saber surviving Lancer's Noble Phantasms: Archer was in his homeland, hell his hometown, for the Fifth Holy Grail War. I imagine that this gives him some boost, in addition to being a Counter Guardian, a being that has fought nearly all Servants and remembers them as a Servant of Alaya. And Rin is hands down a better Master than Kirei, not even mentioning that Kirei isn't even his original Master. Saber however does not have these numerous advantages. However, her Luck stat is A+, Luck being the "ability to defy fate" the thing that Gae Bolg sort of uses to complete it's attack. Concepts are a big part of the Fate and Type-Moon universes ability/magic systems as certain beings will be at an advantage or disadvantage against different beings and weapons. Is it completely unrealistic that Saber would've been able to dodge it with Shirou as her Master? Of course it is. But the + in the A+ rank means that in extreme circumstances, such as Arturia's situation, the skill can exceed its parameters and temporarily go a little over the next rank. Next rank being EX, I can sorta see it happening. The impossibility of the task being the exact reason that EX Luck could dodge the blow that has already occurred, as Luck defies fate and certainty, the very concepts that Lancer's spear uses. Please keep in mind that this is off the top of my head, so I could be wrong.

Archer cant get a boost unless he has a legend, which he doesn't so It doesn't matter where he's summoned. Fighting all of the servants is irrelevant due to it only giving him knowledge of the ability(which can be gained from analyzing the weapon anyway), and not the power to top it. He does that on his own. It's not unrealistic that Saber can dodge Gae bolg. That's not how the luck stat works. In fate luck stats are a servants ability to defy fate. Gae bolg is an ability, which twists fate to always hit it's target, so it makes sense. You only need B rank luck to dodge. Gae bolg is only B rank so it doesn't make sense for it to need something of higher rank to cancel it out. Sabers luck didn't increase. she had B rank luck the entire time under Shirou.

Archer managed to block Gae Bolg because his Rho Aias is not a copied Noble Phantasm -- it is instead a Conceptual Weapon. It is an embodiment of the concept of "defence against thrown weaponry". It may break in process, but it will always stop the attack as long as Archer has enough mana to do so. The reason EMIYA took damage to his arm by blocking was because Rho Aias requires three times the amount of mana needed to cast the attack in order to reflect it, and using that much mana all at once put a significant strain on his Magic Circuits.

I don’t know if this really matters, but Scathatch’s Interlude quest In Fate Grand Order implies that if is possible for the gae bolg to miss. So, maybe it’s not completely an instant kill, but requires a degree of concentration and will to aim, that Cu did not have while fighting Saber.

Rho Aias is the shield of sure deflection Gae Bolg is a spear that never misses I think them cancelling each other out and Archer then surrendering to Cu was perfectly fine. Even at the best of times Lancer is a terrible opponent for Archer to face. (Protection from Arrows, for a start.)

Lancer is the fastest Heroic spirit, Archer's agility is more average, so landing a being able to get the attack off to begin with is a pretty big if. 2. Lancer's protection from Arrows may not be effective against Gae Bolg, given the strength of the weapon. Once launched though, I imagine it would work exactly as designed. The thing is, being stabbed by Gae Bolg will stop Lancer eventually, but he has battle continuation in the mean time.

Its not an immediate defense against projectiles. ''Like Lancer, Saber has defense against projectiles weapons. Lancer reads the course of the projectile attack using the sound of cutting air and the enemy's murderous intent. Saber uses the sound of cutting air, and her instincts.'' If there are too many projectiles to block, or If the force of the weapon is too strong protection against arrows wont work.

Saber could've survived due to her Luck and Magic Resistance, and obviously that spear is using magic to function and alter Destiny, not technology. As for Archer, it could be due to him blocking the attack. You claimed it was undodgeable, but Archer didn't dodge, he blocked it with (what serves as) a magical Barrier. Therefore, he was delaying the unavoidable impact so it would stop short on its on. Or, perhaps the Barrier itself became the attacks new target and thus was not homing in on Archer as it already hit its mark. I'm just going by what you've said and what I know from the show (mostly the "Fate" route adaptation) to make these assumptions.

His luck is pretty low. The best way to kill someone with Gae Bolg for Cu was to attack before he performs the attack, in which he never did in his fight with the two(one is out of unknown reasons, while Archer was only able to barely block the attack and minimalize the damage it brought)

Cu doesn't beat Saber/Archer for three reasons. 1. He's not allowed to. His master doesn't *want* to win, he just wants to screw with the Grail War. 2. Cu's master *refuses* to give him mana. He's stuck using the mana that he got when he was summoned, and is fighting the grail war while effectively starving to death. 3. That's not Cu's original master. Nasu (author) came out and said that Cu would have basically won the war with his original master, with Berzerker being the only challenge for him.
