The Late John Darling used to shoot over a 1000 rabbits a season with a 12 ft/lb Spring Air rifle and a home made head light. Spring air rifles are self contained. Easy to fix if they go wrong. With no extra Expense on charging gear.

I think a 5 litre diving bottle costs about £175 at today’s prices . As they last 5 years before having to be retested that works out to be £35 per annum or 67 pence per week according to my maths , quite expensive 😂

Good to see that you are reviewing a 'real air rifle' for a nice change. 😄 I own an HW50S in .177 and it is ( in my opinion ) a superb air rifle and as I shoot merely for R&R I am quite pleased with it's performance. Here in Canada this one would cost approximately 900 CDN$ or 501 Pounds Sterling ( as of this moment in currency conversion ) so it's is not a low cost or budget friendly rifle. Then again, any sport or hobby will cost some money so, enjoy it at your budget level. I do hope you do come back to spring type air rifles again soon. Thanks for your efforts on this one Lancs.

That's not a springer, that's a Weihrauch. An item of not only beauty and function, but the epitome of perfection. Wiehrauch. Nothing more needs to be said!

They have good barrels but I have found that their recent rifles (2000s onwards) need the cylinders re-polishing and the cocking slot de-burred, excess grease removed and proper lubricants applied. The stock HW30 spring bends with use, giving the impression that the rifle "smooths out", whereas in reality it's just an improperly tempered spring. The factory cuts corners on these details to reduce the man-hours expended on the "invisible" components of their rifles.

I agree. After watching ( one of the last so far ) of The Weaponised Hippie, I started to shoot as much as possible using no rests, just alog or box to rest left leg on. I do think most springers or gas rams prefer all hands on. All the best to all from across the Channel. Keith

Love my pcp rifles and my springers. I like traditional and tactical rifles too and I tend to take one of each when I go to the range, I’m very lucky to have a few of each. The springers I will keep, the pcp will get changed when the next latest and greatest that I like comes along. If I could keep only one rifle it would probably be my HW95 break barrel. As you have said you are not a regular springer shooter, So please NEVER LET GO OF THE BARREL WHEN LOADING, never just rely on the safety catch, it only fails once and you loose your trigger finger in the “bear trap”! Best wishes thanks again for this and many other videos, shoot safe.

@@lancsvermincontrol I mean yeah when you are shooting at sub-12, basically everything is trash. with that energy rating you cant even go over 600fps with 15gr pellet. Hard to make any significant distance hits with that. I have gas ram break barrels that perform quite well between 800-900fps with 15gr pellet. Can make repeatable offhand hits at 100yd with them. without sufficient velocity and energy, you are really limited to short range shooting (10-40yd), and even there, its very anemic.

Ear Defenders with an air rifle. Surely no risk of damage?

Being younger I still have my hearing and the amount of older (stubborn) people who now have bad hearing I don't want to take that risk. After a while it started to hurt my ears.

@@irishkelly654 Ok, I agree it's good practice to show "proper" technique to youngsters but have never heard of anyone smashing their thumb in a break barrel. The sear mechanism would have to fail or a dummy would have to pull the trigger with the safety off and than the breech block would somehow have to grab your thumb and pull it back and down into a crack of about 1/8 of an inch or less. I guess you could get a nasty skin pinch/cut, but that's about it. Now, an underlever/sliding breach can cause some serious damage.

Rubbish...had the same scope on all my springers (my 5 springers are full power, not limited to 12LBS) for years and hundreds, if not thousands of rounds. All hold zero and all performing as new! You need to educate yourself. Years ago, as a rookie to springers (first one), I put a regular rifle scope on it and yes, it destroyed the scope - I learned a valuable lesson - I got educated!
