This is a previously unpublished video that I did on a backpacking trip to the Land Between the Lakes in October 2012.
The idea to hike this location in the fall came to me from an article in the August 2012 issue of Backpacker Magazine, which gave details on water sources and campground locations. Unfortunately, I never found the campsites listed in the article, and the water sources were all dry, which ended up making for a long, pretty miserable first day of the hike.
In addition, rough weather was forecast to come into the area the night of the first day. It ended up holding off that first day, but was coming in for certain the afternoon of the second day. All of this contributed to deciding to shorten the trip by a day. Instead of retracing our steps back to the car on the North-South Trail, I decided to do a shorter road walk on the 'Trace' roadway, hoping we could catch a ride at least part of the way back.
All the problems we encountered are what led me to decide not to publish the video originally, but I do think it is a good look into one of my earlier backpacking trips with Jaden and can provide some good information to anyone thinking of doing a hike in the Land Between the Lakes area.

Yes, I know. I look back on these older videos and cringe at all the mistakes... but somehow even on the most recent trips I still make so many mistakes. It's all about the living and learning, and it never seems to stop.

This is an awesome video. You demonstrate that even when the trip goes sideways, it’s important to keep your head, make the best of what you have, and learn something for next time.

I am glad that you published this video. Even if it was from many years ago. As a new backpack myself, I can learn from videos that were previously unpublished. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thanks for the video! We got out on our first hike for a while at the weekend, and enjoyed saying David Gray quotes to each other the whole way round! “This is what we’re hiking in”! :)

Nice old video! I learned a lot - plan for a change, booties for the pup, don't count on water or weather, enjoy the turtles or what ever you find, keep a positive outlook! In the end, a nice trip! Thanks!

@@davidgrayin I have had quite a few experiences such as this but with mountain biking camping And didn't make sure I had enough water sources made for pretty bad situations but I got through it Chalk one went up for the Sawyer squeeze I came across some small creeks and streams very tiny creeks and streams with just enough water to get me through it when I found them and back then there was no GPS cell phone for me so it made finding water a little more challenging

I'm not sure if I'll go back, but I probably would if someone was planning a trip there and wanted some company. The hiking wasn't really all that interesting, and reminded me of much of the Indiana hiking I have much closer to home (and with more hills and interesting terrain in southern Indiana). My expectation was that I'd spend much more time along the lakes, with really cool campsites overlooking the lake, but most of the hiking wasn't near the water and there weren't many views after the start of the hike. I'm still glad I did it because I learned a lot, both about the area and backpacking in general during my earliest days of backpacking.
