LAND BORDER CROSSING FROM HO CHI MINH TO PHNOM PENH | What To Know Before You Go

It's quite expensive to fly from Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi into Cambodia, so most people end up going by bus across the border from Saigon to Phnom Penh. For those who have never travelled by land border inbetween countries before, there are some extra things to consider compared to flying and also always check if sometimes visa requirements differ depending on whether you are entering a country by air or by land. In our case it case the same, either you get a Cambodian tourist visa online before your trip or you can get one on arrival (with an extra fee). If you're thinking of making the trip, you can watch this video to see what our experience was like and hopefully it will help you feel more at ease about everything. We went with Giant Ibis as our bus choice (as most tourists do). It's the most expensive option, but might be less of a headache in the long run.

I remember that border crossing. The attendant for the bus we were on took everyone's passports and that was a new experience for us as our first reaction was we may never see them again. Of course, everything turned out fine, but it was simply part of the expediting service they performed. Giving up one's passport in a strange land where you don't speak the language was tough though!

So cool to see you and your dad travelling together through SE Asia! I can tell he's having the time of his life. I went to Cambodia with my parents when I was 17 and loved it. Phnom Penh was a cool city, the Killing Fields genocide memorial was the 3rd most emotionally traumatic site I've visited after Auschwitz and Treblinka and the Angkor temples may be touristy but they're definitely a site you'll be amazed by.

Cambodia is an amazing place. Just a word about crossing the border - it is very important to have a full six months left on your passport (not 5 months and 3 weeks, as we learned from experience). I took the Giant Ibis bus as well; they actually had Cambodian SIM cards available at their Saigon office. That certainly made the phone thing easier. One note - although I've heard different accounts, the only way I could make the Grab app payments work was to uninstall and re-install the app and enter my bank card information again.
