NOTE: This video was published before Nissan Australia changed its servicing intervals. In the Ownership section of the video, we state the service intervals are six months/10,000km. As of early 2022, these have been changed to 12 months/10,000km.

I have a defender 110 D300 HSE I get asked about it everywhere I go. I tow 3,500kg boat no sweat. It is a great car I have had 5 Land Rover products and never had major issues. The new defender is a cracking car and has so many useful features. It’s the Swiss Army knife of factory stock 4x4. Don’t knock it till you drive one. I did back to back with land cruiser and it was a massive difference.

Agree. I have done 10,000km in 6 months. 1000km or more of mixed hard and light off road, the rest about half highway and city driving, plus about 2500km of that was towing (not heavy though) and it’s been faultless. Amazingly capable car.

I test drove Disco 5, LC200 and LD D250 back to back, then settled down with LD, picked the higher power vesion just to put icing on the cake. Never had issue so far. The Patrol comes with a rear Diff Lock also, not mentioned. You can also speed up the closing speed of the Patrol rear door. I would have liked to see some overtaking with and without the caravan attached as you would see the Patrol beat the others easily. You can also turn on the 360 degree cameras on the Patrol when offroad. On road in the Patrol you can select sand mode for sharper and more aggressive gear changes.

@granthenderson687 I have spoken to many owners and they do acknowledge it likes a drink around town and uses more than the LC towing but the gap varies with conditions. The Patrol has much better perforce though But the gap of about $40k to a similarly equipped LC buys a lot of fuel. Please note the towing fuel consumption here - the Patrol was noticeably thirstier than the other two. And I am a fan of the Patrol. But would probably buy the Defender, having had a Discovery some time ago and loved it. Great vehicle.

I have a y62 and despite the good reviews on the gearbox by other commentators, it's not that great, doesn't make the best decisions, but it's reliable from what I hear. The engine loves to rev out, it's not the right fit for the car, it should be more low end torquey and less peaky, but the engine is off the shelf not purposed designed like the others. When you put your foot down, the gearbox will slam down a few cogs and the engine will rev out hard. I'd prefer some middle ground where it'll hold the same gear and load up. I suppose the gearbox doesn't want to put all that power through a tall ratio. (Unlike my pervious car with a ZF gearbox that was awesome but would prefer to blow itself up then ruin your driving experience) I do enjoy the pure shock on other motorists faces when I smoke them easily. Priceless The y62 is massive. Plenty of space for your junk if that’s your thing. You need to airbag the rear springs for towing. Out of the showroom it dives just fine, don’t let the review put you off. It’s just big in the urban landscape. It doesn’t wallow around, corners with confidence. The cabin is quiet for touring, just don’t buy a rhino rack. No seriously don’t. The car is fantastic offroad. It’s no bull out of the showroom and easily handles bigger rubber if you want to make it better. You’re getting a bigger car, but it’s an older design. It’s never going to be as refined as a landrover, but it’ll be on road for longer. It will do what the LC will do, just not as modern. The interior is ugly af on the y62. You can get the woodgrain blacked out. The y62 engine, gearbox and car are all proven to be reliable with no gimmicks. The other two, well, the jury isn’t out yet. You’re buying into some unproven tech with the hot V etc. The Nissan’s price is way more competitive than the other two, if you weigh that into the story and you need the space than the y62 is probably a good idea.
@error404blah
@error404blah 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should change out the gearbox fluids. I've read from other y62 owners that despite Nissan saying it uses a fluid that never needs changing, doing so improved the performance drastically. I'd say it's worth a try, you have nothing to lose.

@@rkmckenna I'd absolutely do it if I were you. Again, you have nothing to lose. Plus, most wear and tear comes from the initial break-in period, just like an engine. So if there would ever be tiny metal shavings in the oil causing problems, it would be now. That's where I reckon most of the trouble comes. Then every 50k kilometers, and you'll be golden. Lifetime oils are a scam, it just doesn't make sense from a mechanical standpoint.

Based from your video, you said that patrol's interior is "dated" right? Well in the Middle East, it is not. The top specification of the Nissan Patrol here is called LE Platinum (if I'm not mistaken). Difference is, they changed the rims, and the interior is on the latest tech so buying one here in the Middle East is worth it than in other countries. There is Nissan Patrol SE, LE, and XE as well. Titanium and Platinum. They recently changed the styling of its grill, Nissan Patrol 2022. So honestly, Nissan Patrol wins based in interior, exterior, and as well as it's power. This is also for the Toyota Land Cruiser, that is not the top specification of the one in the video, there are different versions of the LC. Overall, nice video!

The service intervals on the Patrol and Cruiser are ridiculous. 15,000k 12 months with today's oils is well and truly adequate. If you have "severe use" on any of the three the interval rightly should reduce to suit. Unfortunately with the Defender you will need the dealer more often than the service interval will tell you, because so many things will go wrong. Plenty of worldwide experience on this already.

@@Robert-cu9bmYour comment is incorrect. There are AWD vehicles with Low Range. Defender and Discovery are 2 such examples. There was a Subaru I believe in the past with a low range also which was an AWD. The use of terms like AWD and 4WD anyway often are not really useful. An AWD vehicle could be a 6x6 for example where the vehicle has 6 wheels and 6 are driven. However a 4WD could be a 6x4 where the vehicle has 6 wheels and 4 are driven. 4WD just means a vehicle has 4 driven wheels out of any total number whereas an AWD just means all where’s are driven no matter how many (a 2WD motorcycle with an electric motor in each hub is an AWD). Hence my original comment - just call them both permanent 4WD vehicles (or both AWD if you prefer).

So from this test the Land Rover was clearly better than its rivals. The one thing that could not be tested is long term reliability: the Toyota clearly has an advantage here though it is no longer running a super low tech V8 from which much of its famous reliability derives. Land Rover has a terrible reputation built up over many years of under investment and its infamous Rover V8. But recent surveys show that this poor reputation is now rather over stated to the point of disinformation. At the same time the new V6 in the Toyota is unlikely to maintain its predecessors stellar record, and although overall build quality should be second to none, the difference between the two vehicles is unlikely to be yawning gap it once was. If reliability is your biggest concern get a 70 series with the big V8, If not you may as well choose the one you like the most, which from this test sounds likely to be the Land Rover

It's interesting to read the comments, it's like some people watched an entirely different video. Granted, there are different configurations that all three vehicles can be optioned with to make them more fit for purpose. No one in their right mind could consider buying the patrol in this economic climate. Thirsty barge sums it up, the end. Land Cruiser, truly uninspiring as usual yet people can't get enough of them. There's nothing inherently wrong with the Land Cruiser, just nothing really good about it, especially for the money. The best thing about it is there are plenty of people out there that drink the Toyota cool-aid so resale is easy if you develop a sense of taste after buying one. Defender, truly an amazing piece of engineering that makes the other vehicles look like vintage farm machinery. With this kind of performance comes complexity. Part for part, the defender is built to a higher quality/standard, there's just more parts. What I don't think people are considering is, this ain't Land Rovers first rodeo. Air suspension has been available since the early 90s and has come leaps and bounds in refinement and reliability. Suspension aside, there are just as many wires running the drive train on the other two, it's 2022, so the "Simpson Desert" argument can be laid to rest... To summarise: Why would you drive an inferior car to avoid fears of what may never happen? In theory you could save heaps of money living in your car, avoid mortgage, rent and a ton of other living expenses, but who wants to do that? If you're one of the rare individuals that truly believes the Land Cruiser is a nicer car to drive, compared back to back.... Go for gold my friend, some people are basic and that's fine. I probably wouldn't put my hand up to test ride a horse as I'm not sure what I should be looking for, some people aren't well acquainted with the finer points of driving. Disclaimer, clearly written by a Land Rover owner but have had experience with all three vehicles (not absolute latest generation)

Nissans are clearly designed for the Middle East with their super low petrol costs and the Toyota is (again) relying on reputation / marketing to offer less for more. Makes it hard to choose between these. A landrover built in a Toyota a factory would be perfect. Someone who can design and someone who can build reliability. Patrol TiL still punching. i would buy another Patrol without batting a eyelid. Albeit more expensive then originally to get into one now day's in saying that. 7 years on, my current Til patrol the 40+k i saved in purchase price vs the then 200 series price, Brought me a shed load of fuel and servicing in that time. Drives great, tows our 3t. van well when needed. 17lt per 100 on 98 and 23lt while fully loaded towing per 100. From the current vid the parol still has more to offer, for the cost. A vid of done the 3 top spec versions of all the models, the patrol i would imagine will still be far better value. Your getting a top spec patrol for a basic version of the i other two on offer in this review. Petrol, i think will still be here to stay, no DPF,EGR,Ad blue,servicing etc. Overall winner, sorry the Patrol is still king, the other two i wouldn't consider changing for Price themselves out the market vs pros n cons imho.
