In this video we do a brief introduction to the Land Rover / Range Rover Tyre Pressure Monitoring System ( TPMS ) and look how to replace a leaking valve stem. The valve stem can be separated from the actual TPMS sensor so you can replace the valve seals without needing to replace the actual TPMS sensor.LR043162

Hi Simon. My 2021 D300 Defender is fitted with rubber valve stem sensors. These are different to those shown in your video. It caused a bit of confusion for my tyre guy and the dealer parts manager here in Australia. Might be worth noting. we don't know why but its been clarified that both the metal valve sensor of the type you've shown and the rubber stemmed valve with a different sensor are in use. The rubber stemmed version requires the valve stem to be changed every time it is removed as the seal ruptures. All the best and please keep up the great work.

Like a comment from Kenny G on here about 3 years ago I had a TPMS issue with 2014 RRS when upgrading new wheels and tyres fitted with their own sensors. A local LR Main dealer wanted £240 to “code” my new oem alloys with their own tpms fitted. Instead I put the old tpms units from my cars original alloys inside the new upgraded wheels. Sorted for a fraction of the cost by my regular tyre shop. I think our 2014 RRS had issues with probably the newer gen of TPMS units. The tyre shop was new to tpms issues. But said Porsche’s they store winter wheel/tyres for owners just swap straight over no issues. It was three years ago so prob more is known about these devices now like you are doing here. Cheers

Useful again..I had not really thought about how these work....after a recent puncture (am old wheel balance weight punched clean through the tyre) I noted that they did not replace the valve but when buying tyres they do change them BUT I guess reuse the old electronic part and simply fit the valve bits with new washers. Thank you for this! Richard 😃😃😃

Simon, I bought a set of diamond cut 21" 5085 from a 2019 RRS to replace the 20" standard wheels on my 2014 car. TPMS would not work. I eventually had to buy 4x LR070840 TPMS valves to get it to work. Once fitted, I had to drive about for 10 minutes for them all to start working and have been perfect ever since. Might be related to your GX FW point early in the video.

I believe that the sensor is long life battery powered. The battery is not replaceable. The complete transducer has to be replaced. The piezoelectric transducer switches the sensor on when the vehicle is in motion and off to save power when stopped.

Simon, the BMW Mini used a cunning system for TPMS by using the ABS speed sensors, but I guess they use conventional sensors now. If a tyre lost pressure that wheel then rotated faster and triggered the warning. A reset button below the handbrake lever recalibrated each time you reset the tyre pressures.

When the tyre fitter changes tye tyre they should orientate the bead braker opposite the valve, and insert tyre leavers into the top well atleast 90o from the valve stem. Because theres a chance tye valve can get damaged in both operations

I'm going to Edinburgh for a few days. "The Tyre Extinguishers" are very active in the city at the moment - can you give some thought to designing a locking valve cap that would be sophisticated enough to defeat their efforts and unique enough for there to be a million combinations (like a wheel nut key). I've considered supaglue but that would cause me more inconvenience than they would, drilling a hole through the stem and cap for a teeny weeny padlock but there's not enough material, using alloy caps as these corrode and you have to cut them off, or some sort of indelible dye marker to identify the culprit, but then I am sure to forget and I get covered as well. There are some cheap items on the internet that rely on a simple key and expanding washer and also some that use an allen screw to clamp down on the cap thread - neither fill me with confidence. This is a serious request, these misinformed characters are causing real problems.

I'd just smear a bit of silicon sealer on the washer if it leaks. Certainly wouldn't even touch the valve when changing a tyre unless there was significant visible corrosion or damage. Perhaps I'd check the torque of the retaining collar. Otherwise I reckon its just a way of selling more parts.

Another Q i have, im looking to get some 22" alloys to replace my 21" on my 2017 RRS, i assume any alloys i buy with a FW TMPS will not work on my car? and do you know what year they moved from FW to GX part numbers. Very informative video Simon - I had always wondered how these TPMS systems worked. Do you have any data as to how accurate these gizmos are? As a Defender 90 TD5 owner this is redundant technology to me. I have 235/85R16 General Grabber AT tyres which are only ever checked after a main dealer service (because they always over-inflate them). Other than that they never lose any pressure. Now, I would be extatic if you would do a video of how to replace a front windscreen washer jet on a TD5. Some on-line forums say it can be done by removing the ashtray to gain access to the retaining nut, otherwise it is off with the upper dashboard which is a pig of a job. P.S. Tyler is improving his video technique leaps and bounds.

I've seen in a few places on the interwebs, that the wiring on the LRs are usually in place, for the TMPS, but the sensors are fitted or not. I've not looked on my 2011 Disco 4, but assuming they're there, and I plug the sensors in, could you investigate if it can all be turned on with the OBD tool? It'd cost a bit for me to do it and find out it won't work!

Yet another layer of unwanted technology! Vehicles have been driven around for over 70 years without any problem, then some government moron with nothing better to do comes up with this daft idea, if a driver cannot be bothered to check tyre pressures he is not capable of being in charge of a motor vehicle, and if the vehicle runs over a sharp object or a small object in the case of low profile tyres, he will get an instant deflation, so the fancy sensor will do no good at all! Stay safe! Chris B.

I think you have summed it up. How many drivers nowadays could change a wheel, let alone know where the jack is located in their vehicle. Welcome to the dumbed down generation, you've only got to see the average TV program to see where all this is going!

Disagree - TPMS is a lifesaver. I bought a system for my old vehicle which does not have TPMS as standard. The TPMS os a valve cap with a receiver on the dashboard. If you get a slow puncture it warns you. I once had a slow puncture while I was abroad and could not easily get it sorted. I set the pressure a little high and the TPMS warned me when it got too low and I drove over 1,000 miles across Europe - I needed to pump up the tyre 3 or 4 times during the trip - but I got home safely without the tyre going to flat and getting damaged. So - totally disagree - it's an excellent tool that can save the cost of a new tyre should you get a slow puncture while driving. It can even give you enough time with a faster puncture so you can pull over and change the wheel without having to drive flat and destroy the tyre.
