Great coverage. Thanks for the update. I feel that people are starting to change their minds about being a “real Defender” and are coming around to it, the more they see on its capability through the various types of videos being posted. Change is a tough thing to accept sometimes. I feel the engineers have done an incredible job with the task they had, and I’m loving the design language. There was an off road video the other day from Colorado showing its capability on rocks and other types of terrain, just amazing. I think it looks incredible and having had three hours in it myself, really enjoyed its size, shape and function. I’m looking forward to mine coming in September. Looking forward to more videos.

I agree, there will always be change and without change there would be no progress and without progress the original Defender would never had existed to start with. This is a brilliant machine and that is something to celebrate, and in my view worthy of the Defender name for this century. Enjoy yours when it comes.

Good coverage and it's great to see, at last, that someone has included mud flaps. I'm surprised that people don't do this as the flaps really protect the doors against the stones and tar that are thrown up by the front wheels and the rear flaps minimise the suck-back of dirt to the rear of the car and minimise stones thown onto following vehicles. I was surprised that the cordless phone charger was not an option for you. The one thing you didn't have and I would have added myself is the rear bumper protection for when you load the car. This is definitely a "real" Defender and I am drooling and want to get one somehow.
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
John Willett good point Re bumper protection - I am guessing this is a dealer fit item and will check it out. Mud flaps are the ‘classic’ option and very much needed for towing Airstream to avoid stone chips to the front in addition to points you made.

If you spec the seven seat model then the rear bench cannot be folded flat because of the slide / tilt mechanism that allows access to the third row of seats - glad I specced the 5 seat First Edition. Another useful thing I found this weekend when I used the fridge for the first time is that the stowage area at the front of the console low down where you can reach in from the top or the sides,where the USB etc sockets is is also cooled,

Very informative video, thank you very much. I'm looking forward to driving my First Edition when it finally arrives! I was also surprised about the lack of wireless charge pad as per your video. I've just watched an American video featuring a First Edition which DID have the wireless charge pad, even though it still isn't an option you can choose on the configurator? So maybe the difference is due to market specific differences or maybe it is now included as standard? I'll let you know when I get mine!

Great video - I hope you'll do more. I'm considering the 90 when it's available but very nervous about LR reliability and customer satisfaction ratings which seem to be amongst the worst in the industry! A Land Cruiser would be a safer bet but Defender is much more interesting. I've considered land rover in the past but was put off by arrogant, poorly trained sales people.
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, there is a lot of talk about LR reliability and I don't think sales staff are ever fully up to date on all cars so I get where you are coming from. From my experience I have had a lot of cars from LR - generally from new - including the original Defender, Vogue (2), RR Sport (3), Discovery (3) and Evoke. I may have been lucky but the cars I have owned have always been reliable with no bad builds. I do look after my cars though. I know of one person who has had issues though with an Evoke (lots going wrong) so it does happen - just probably not as much as the reports suggest though. Getting a good relationship with the dealer (service rather than sales) will help I think in the event of a problem. LR cars are expensive so expectations are probably higher (as you can reasonably expect) which might account for the negative noise in some sense. I can really though only report on my own experience with LR which has been a good one so far.

Does the roof cargo rack add any noticeable wind noise?
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. There is a bit at 80 MPH+ but nothing significant under that. The roof rack cross beams have an aerofoil type profile - I believe Thule employ this design too - so a lot of thought seems to have gone into this. My Vogue is super quiet so the fact that it compares at normal speeds is very good.

Lovely vehicle but it's going to have to prove its durability over the coming years. I can't see many of these being used as farm workhorses pulling tri axle ifor Williams trailers in the Highlands of Scotland etc
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
I agree, doesn’t seem like a workhorse vehicle. Will be interesting to see how the commercial variants are kitted out. If it can be stripped back with say the screen ruggedised and vinyl seats, coil and shock suspension etc. It might work?

Interesting car. Have to be honest and say that I really don't like the painted panels in the glazing.
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
They do grow on you I would say and set the car apart. They cover structural elements on the 110 but not on the 90 and can be optional I believe.

I have a Discovery 4. I also had the Discovery 3 but never liked the new one. I know the new defender will be great off road but just wanted to ask how it compares to the Discovery 4 on road.
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
Aston Tirrold It’s a very comfortable ride and copes with pot holes and bumps in the road like drain covers etc really well. I seem to remember the Discovery 4 was similar. Very easy to drive. It would be a great replacement for the Disco 4 with the benefit of the improved tech which is next level.

Simon Perry I guess it all depends on what everyone thinks the name Defender stands for. If it means the most off-road capable car LR makes then it would qualify. I am sure there are other criteria that would apply to the original where the new one wouldn’t qualify. For me I’ve had the original and prefer this one for what I need it for.

What a load of crap! It will not be able to last a day in the outback. It will break and there will be no Landrover engineer to be seen as far as the eye can see. Landrover had failed with this SUV for soccer mothers. I am a proud owner of a real 2010 Landrover Defender Series 110 that I use everyday. This crap SUV will not be able to survive a day work that my real Defender does. I will keep my real Defender instead. Thank you very much.

Check out the videos of what it went through in Namibia and other parts of the world, it is very capable. Time will tell how it copes over time in real world use. When it comes to driving for ten hours non-stop to the Alps from the UK and then climbing narrow twisting roads in snow for an hour or two with all the family on board - given the choice between new and old (and I have had both) - I'd take the new! Horses for courses perhaps?

Thanks for your review. Curious if the plastic on the interior of the cargo area is the rubber finish that’s on the dash or is is hard plastic...does it appear to be durable?
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
Plastic tread plate design in cargo area is quite hard and very different to most of the dash areas such as door grab handles and grab rail on dash which is soft a bit like neoprene. I’m keen to know how this copes with general use as it gets dirty and will feed back on follow-up video as the car gets some real world use.

Great video Jonathan. Quick question, how is the ride quality of the defender compared to your RR Vogue ? Does the defender gives you that comfy, floating feeling which RR normally has ? Specially when you driving on a road with lots of pot holes.
@JonathanElvidge4 жыл бұрын
Hi Irosha, ride quality is really good, so good in fact we have decided to sell the Vogue which we thought we might want to keep for long runs. Ride is softer which is great on poor roads, whereas Vogue is much firmer and clatters more. On long runs card is smooth and comfortable. Handling is not as good as the Vogue at speed and missing some power compared with 4.0 V8 but these are not deal breakers. Defender tows really well too which was my other concern. So no need to hang on to Vogue now.

Great review, detailed and impartial. I have a Discovery 4 and trying to decide what to do next. Totally with your last comment that JLR lost me with the curvy Discovery 5, which looks like every other blob SUV and is not especially practical. Think I will wait for the hybrid Defender next year as will prob depreciate less and, I'm guessing, introduce a bit more tech. Personally really like the explorer look. Keep up the good work Jonathan.
