Hey I have been following you for years, and you guys have given me great ideas, and I love your stories and content. At the same time, you have given me things that make me decide what not to do. When you got your death wobble in the steering, I thought alot about it, and decided to just stick with the Old Man Emu shocks and no lift. I love the BP51s, but I think adding too much angulation to your drive train puts too much strain. You have obviously done what you think is right for your driving, but when I see you videos, I don't see that you are doing anything that I cannot do with my stock drive train set-up with heavy loads. I kept the 235/85R16 tyres (Goodrich AT), and travel with 5 people and tons of climbing gear. I have also upgraded parts like the LOF clutch, but maybe reducing your wheel size and shocks with no lift would reduce the strain for your trip. Just a thought. Regardless with what you decide, thank you for posting. For those of us that are slowly modifying their rigs and dreaming about the day that they have gotten the kids through university, thank you for providing inspiration. You and your family are great!!! Have an asesome adventure and keep safe!!!

You seem to be doing awesome on your trip. Already 10,000 km in that short time.

Its good to see your trip is going well and you reminded me that its time for an oil change on my TD5....but not outside today with 45mph wind and rain here😀

My Puma is the 2.2 engine (Ford Durotorq). I have mine serviced every 7000km or so and also use genuine LR parts. I still use 5W30 albeit i travel around Southern Africa in extremely hot dusty summer conditions. I’ve had no problems apart from a clutch replacement (LOF installed). Problems are experienced on those engines when they are mapped to produce more kW and injector problems occur resulting in pistons being destroyed. Thanks for all the time you take to share your trip.

I would definitely say that every 10.000 km is fine for tyre rotation. For spares such as oil filters and engine parts, have you compared the prices of Land Rover genuine parts to Ford genuine pparts? I would guess they are cheaper. I only know of one problem with that engine and it's premature turbo wear. Be sure to let the engine idle for 30 seconds or so before turning off.👍

Good overview. Hopefully the kids are getting involved and learning some core skills.As for leaks, you've just got to remember it's a Land Rover - it lives and breaths. It's a living thing.

I do perform the service in my 2008 Defender puma 110/2.4 L, very much same as your husband, I think is worth to be meticulous to your engine, specially wen travelling over-landing, myself as a marine mechanic love to fix, and play with the tools and spending time knowing the machinery, I have been using 5W/40 for over 110000 kms the old Ford engine just love it, never have any issue driving on trips non stop for over 10 hours at high speeds or lower speeds or temperatures from -5*C to up 50*C , I'm in Australia so yeah distances and temperatures are insane you will experience very similar conditions in the American continent, remember to clean the air mass flow sensor makes a big difference for the date readings of the ECU and fuel mix ratio calculations and put some 2 stroke oil in your tank before fuelling back up, this trick will make the engine run so beautiful will keep the injectors, common rail pump and fuel volume control valve lubricated this will make most of the vibrations and noise disappear very much instantly, is a good old trick from the top dogs, (1 L of 2stroke oil pour 100 L of diesel) my puma engine has been working flawless for over 16 years, I do carry a set of injector copper watcher seals and the specific tools to perform the injector seals service and replacement with me at all times as well, it is a very easy job, I did drive over 40000 kms around Australia and never had a any issue with the Rover, (touch wood ) keep those awesome videos coming, I do enjoy them stay safe and hydrated cheers from Australia 🍻🍺🍻

I too have a 2008 Defender Puma 2.4. 90 XS. Ive owned it for 2 years with no issues. It’s good to year good comments about the 2.4 engine. I bought not knowing much about Defender engines and was horrified when I started reading bad reports - don’t get Pumaed etc. Ive had the engine oil changed every 6 months irrespective of mileage.

@@stevewray1838 Yep, those engines are brilliant just look up at the Ford transit vans been use for delivering goods all around the world, some with up to 700000+ kms on the odo, one of the mayor reasons land Rover choose installing this engine I think the other defender are just jealous as the 200, 300 are so slow and noise and the td5 always gets you with the BMW tax (expensive parts and import tax), and by been 5 cylinders there is not many mechanics the can perform a good timing on a 5 cylinders engine, but I do love the sound of a well tune td5 for sure Puma engines are reliable and very economic on fuel and parts if you buy from Ford dealerships of-course and remember the Code named Puma came out during development, these Ford 2.0 L, 2.2 L, and 2.4 L engines are called ZSD. They are produced at the company's Dagenham plant in east London not china and this is always a plus over all is a nice power plant, is not my 6.5 L V8 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD but gets the job done with ease

Mines a Td5, only thing I'd do on yours is at some point have the injectors tested, as that seems to kill those engines quick with a hole through the piston.

Very nice Defender! If you can research and fit a gauge to measure the EGR (exhaust gas temperature) and keeping it under 700 Celsius will extend the life of the engine very much. Enjoy the trip!

2009 Defender 110 Station Wagon, 2.4 Puma, 325k km, and does around 35mpg UK (8 L/100km). So far only major engine issue was injectors and blown turbo at 140k, and a water pump seal failure at 160K. Regularly (as in every month) drives from Bavaria to northern England and back. I hope I have not jinxed things!

HI, I follow this English builder: "Mahker Workshop" who makes a lot of modifications on the engines. In a video, answering a specific question on which engine is the best on the 90/110 series, he declared that: "among all the units mounted, in the case of a hypothetical replacement of the engine, I would mount the revised and corrected 200 one" ............ 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve seen engines last for years with crappy maintenance and I’ve seen where they broke down even when maintained right. I’ve learned that it seems to be a luck of the draw. On the tire rotation I personally wouldn’t worry about it unless I was mostly on hard pack or asphalt or cement
@tomrastrick17832 ай бұрын
Great to do on road maintenance! My only concern is with the extremely regular tyre rotation as surely by constantly taking off the wheel nuts and torquing them back up you’re putting premature wear on the stub axel threads Increasing the risk of failure? If it’s working for you then great, but if your tracking is good the tyre wear should be even regardless.

Most of the people who absolutely hate the Puma engine fall into one of two groups: 1. People who’ve never owned one. 2. People who own Land Rover garages that will sell you a BMW or LS swap for $75,000
