@MiguelHernandez-tm4um I got a 2012 with the timing chain issue on the V8. It was already replaced when I got it. Since then, i have only had to replace a bad fuel injector. It was around 100k miles that it failed. Otherwise it's been great. People take the time to bash things online when something breaks. Not a lot of people take the time to say when things don't break. Great to see all the highlights Scott. I made a dumb decision 2 years ago when I upgraded one of my 130Tdi's to a new D-max for the modern family-friendly safety features.... what a mistake! Your adventures in a D4 convinced me 6 months ago to trade the 'ute with no soul' in on a 9 yr old TDV6 D4 with 90,000km.... have been smiling ever since! IMO the D3/4 is still the best all round 4x4 by far, even today no other vehicle can match the combination of Comfort, Capability & Capacity. Here's hoping the new Defender comes close to replacing the D4, although sad to see the split tailgate not carried over.

Hi Scott, how is the reliability on your disco? I am thinking about getting one but was worried about some of the issues. By the looks of it, you have taken yours to the edge and it hasn't failed. Anything I should look out for when buying a second hand one?
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Mine has been excellent so far (touch wood). Of course the first six years is expected to be the best for any vehicle but I also think they are no worse for reliability than any similar or comparable large 4WD. Secondhand is difficult because there's such a range of ages and budgets these days. But I do know that maintenance history is by far the most important factor, more than distance on the clock and features fitted by a long margin. Serviced better than the long factory intervals is what you want.

Scott hi, great video. Our D4 here in the UK is same colour as yours! Our Compomotive wheels and BFGs arrive next week, and hoping to carry the fifth matching wheel onboard. We’re opting for 265/65 R18 tyres.
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rupert, love the Nara Bronze. The 265/65/R18 is a VERY tight fit and needs to be almost fully deflated and then forced in. I know because I’ve just upgraded to this size in the Nitto Ridge Grappler. So you need to fight with it somewhat to get it in and out and carry an air compressor which I know have permanently installed under the passenger seat anyway. But yes it can be done.

Hi Scott, Impressive driving and very nice videos. I would like to know some details of your tyres and wheels. I own same model which came with 20 inch wheels and 255/50/20 tyres. Already scratched the alloys when offloading as not enough tyre height. I was so glad to see your videos and see the solutions. As I have read a lot which says due to large brake callipers disco cannot take smaller diameter wheels. I would be very grateful if you could describe re your wheels and tyres. Many thanks.

Thanks for that. The wheels are listed in the video description plus a couple of the tyres I have run over the last 5 years. There's more waffling about tyre stuff in one of the other comments here (comment by Jack). If I was starting again I'd be getting a set of Tuffant steel wheels for offroad.

What broken/worn out parts have you replaced so far? And how far have you driven it on and off road?
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Touch wood nothing has broken, so only replaced things proactively for preventative maintenance. The front lower control arm bushes could be classed as "broken" by some but I see them as a maintenance item that wears out. Other than that, all fluids and filters have been replaced obviously some more than once in the 125,000km it's traveled. I don't have exact figures but I'd say at least 50% of its life is offroad.

Hi, Love the vid. How do you rate the compmotive rims vs the tiffany steely's ? I am tossing up between the compmotive alloys Vs tuffant alloys vs tuffant steely's. thanks. See you out there!!
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
From a purely off-road perspective the Tuffant steel wheels would be first choice. If aesthetics are a consideration then alloys come in to play, assuming you're looking for one wheel to cover all situations. I'm lucky to have two sets of 18" wheels but I also bought before any Tuffant existed. If I was looking for one set of wheels now it would probably be the Tuffant alloy but prefer the steel wheel for longterm remote travel.
@ThomasDavenport14 жыл бұрын
I have Tuff Ants on my D4 and they're excellent. The smaller diameter (18") makes the D4 so much better in sand than 21's (?!?) it had when I bought it. Don't know what the previous owner was thinking. Maybe he was a drug dealer... Word of warning re the Compos though. Not the quality of the rim itself, I'm sure they're great. This issue was with the importer. I had ordered a set before I got the Tuff Ants but they just never showed up, lots of unanswered emails, missed delivery dates, etc etc, and had to delay a trip to Fraser. Eventually I had to raise an complaint with PayPal just to get my $$ back and all the while it was total radio silence from the importer. From what I've heard, this is not uncommon.

How do you manage to keep it working even using in these harsh conditions? Does the air suspension fails after hard off roading ?
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
I’ve had zero issues with the air suspension and it is a relatively simple system to troubleshoot anyway. Just takes a bit of knowledge and research. Keeping in mine that mine is 2014 and I’d say a 10 year old system like yours would be due for some parts replacement or rebuild, eg valve blocks.

No rear locker and no wade sensing. I would love to have the locker but for majority of situations the traction control is fantastic. I've never failed an obstacle where my mate who has a rear locker in his D4 has cleared it. No I personally don't see the need to trim anything to run bigger tyres. I run 265/60/R18 and I never get left behind. I'd be happy to run 265/65/R18 and a few of my mates do run that size but bigger than that is just unnecessary.

@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Varies a lot to suit surface and how loaded etc. for the steep rocky stuff it’ll be around 24-28 psi and lower from there if required. General offroad I find mid 30’s to be good especially if running heavy for a trip.
@TheShays4 жыл бұрын
Scott H Thanks good to know. I run 28 psi on the 265s on the LR4. There is room for lower psi.
@alantan76444 жыл бұрын
Scott, What is the standard psi for day to day road driving on the 18” on All Terrain tires? Also, could you share your experience if there were any pinching issues when you lowered the psi. Been scouring the web and the general advise is to increase the psi (even when with 18”) to avoid pinching and the that lowering the psi is only helpful in situation of sand. Your input would be most helpful.

How do you get the headlights to do that cool fancy flashing mode plz?
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
It’s a trick of the video that’s not visible to the eye. Some LEDs are controlled via pulsing to set light output and the camera catches this. The D4 seems to be particularly prone to it.

Hi Scott, great video, thanks for sharing. Which off road modes have you found more useful? When you drove it in the dunes, did you use sand mode or did you disable traction control? Cheers!
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Cheers. For the terrain we drive usually Rock Crawl and Mud Ruts are the best modes. For dune driving I generally find no modes & low range are required but with DSC turned off usually works the best. When the sand conditions are more variable then Sand mode can be useful but turning off DSC is the most important thing, that and tyre pressure!
@AnkurNeupane3 жыл бұрын
@@sienaoverland What pressures do you use for on road and for gravel/rocks (1:32)?
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
@@AnkurNeupane On road/bitumen pressure is at least 40 psi for the LT rated tyres I use, often higher than that if I'm fully loaded. For gravel and rocks it depends on how rough/rocky the situation and more importantly what the traction is like. I don't typically go lower than 30 psi unless struggling for traction on steeper terrain.

I may do a few install videos. Bit hard once the mod is finished though.Not that keen to take something off or pull it apart just to make a video. The mudflaps are pretty simple, the front ones don't need any changes and the rears just need a piece cut off to avoid the exhaust pipe.

Great clips, just wondering if your Disco has the active rear diff lock?
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
No, just standard diff.

Loved every second of that. Great to see a fellow LR owner using it for what they were intended. Can I ask you reason for not having a bull bar?
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Bullbar decision is a judgement of our risk profile versus weight/cost/aesthetic. We avoid driving at dusk and into the night and this reduces the risk significantly. I also think quite a lot of run-ins with roos are side hits where the bull bar makes no difference. Of course you get random animal strikes at any time of the day and we may get unlucky and regret it one day but I think it’s a low enough risk.

What size wheels and tires you got on there? And do you think it would be as capable or as easy to drive off-road if it had a manual gearbox? Ie a 79 series land cruiser?
@sienaoverland3 жыл бұрын
Details in description. I find auto box so much easier offroad, especially for sand etc. no momentum loss when you least need it.

How did you manage without bull bar? Any kangaroo hits?
@sienaoverland2 жыл бұрын
None so far. We tend to avoid driving at high risk times in more remote locations where roo strikes are more common.

Hi Scott. Noticed the front lights were blinking. Is this an aftermarket module installed or just a video frame rate thingy?
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Just video frame rate. It’s annoying but I can’t seem to find a video setting that does t do it, at least not with the iPhone.

Awesome compilation Scott, thanks for sharing. There seems to be several different tyres used on the 18” wheels, which is your favourite and would run again?
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
I have run Bridgestone D697 / BFG KO2 / Monsta Mud Warrior / Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 AT My criteria has always been well rated LT spec tyres with good tread. Remote roads in Australia are tough. These tyres all have benefits and I would recommend all of them but it depends on your needs. To be fair the Mickey T's have only just been fitted and not used offroad yet so I can only really comment on the other ones. The best all-rounder for strength, traction and capability in all conditions has been the KO2s. However they cost a lot more than the D697s or the Monsta. Things changed for me when I got the Tuffant steel wheels, which allowed me to run mud tyres AND all terrains. So I decided to try the Mickey T's because I have less need for aggressive tread on the touring wheels and they are very solid but also well mannered and quiet on-road, which makes up the bulk of long range touring for most big trips. But, if I could only pick one tyre to do everything now? I'd probably be getting a set of BFG KM3s.

Hi Scott, when you went touring what spares did you take? I also have a D4. Cheers Owen
@sienaoverland4 жыл бұрын
Hi Owen, I assume you mean D4 specific spares rather than things that should be taken for any 4WD and that list is not too long. What comes to mind; air filter / wheel speed sensor / suspension height sensors / intercooler hose / one of the common relays. I think there's a couple more things but can't remember exactly. Forum threads have been useful to come up with common issues for which spares are worth carrying.
