Once Kia sent a Sportage up their all of these people’s vehicles seem superfluous and just a show for this particular obstacle.
@pearsth Жыл бұрын
With enough traction and clearance anything can make it up anything. There is no magic to any vehicle, including Land Rovers, no matter what marketers want you to think. In this case, my tires lost traction and I slipped into the gap. In other cases I may have just walked right up. What you don't see in a commercial is how many takes it did or didn't take for that Kia sportage to get up and how much time they spent studying to find the abosolute perfect line for that specific vehicle.
@justintaylor37206 жыл бұрын
Okay, for those that say the Kia Sorento did better, that is true. But it WAS a commercial, so we didn't see how long it really took. It could have taken just as long, and they could have cut out the pauses. Also, you are comparing 20+ year old technology to brand new. Not to mention, driver skill matters. Just my $0.02.
@pearsth6 жыл бұрын
Justin Taylor Totally true. Bottom line is that I needed to be about three inches the the right on the climb and the tires would have had enough contact patch to avoid the slip into the crevice. Off roading is a matter of clearance and traction. The best drivers know how to put whatever car in the best place to optimize both. I will say that if the Kia or similar stock vehicle would have followed the path I took that day, it would no longer have a front bumper, rear bumper, and lower body damage on the door sills. It could have made it through, though. That is where the modifications of lift and aftermarket protective parts come into play.
@justintaylor37206 жыл бұрын
pearsth - Yea, that's what it looked like, (vehicles position). I hope to one day get out that way and drive some trails. I'm actually looking at getting my own Discovery in the near future for trails, hunting, and what not. I like vehicles that you don't see on trails that often. And here in Wisconsin, I haven't seen many Land Rovers. That's why I've been watching every video I can and learning as much as possible about them before I take the dive haha. So far, I like what I see.
@pearsth6 жыл бұрын
Justin Taylor Discoveries are dirt cheap now but you need to love them. There are good ones and really bad ones that have a lot of shit break all the time. My first one I bought new in 97 then sold in 2003 after modifying it a bit more than this one (33” tires, more lift, and some additional suspension mods to radius arms and trailing links to account for the lift). My friend bought this one used at 3 years old and did all of same mods (bumpers, sliders, etc) but with a smaller lift and these 31 inch tires. I always regretted selling mine and he sold this one to me a few years ago. I have it for occasional driving for fun. If you want something cheaper and easier to maintain there are better options (Jeep Cherokee) but they don’t have the same character.
@justintaylor37206 жыл бұрын
pearsth - Yea, my buddies always say get a Jeep or full size. But I don't see the need for something that large, plus Jeeps are super common wherever I go. When I was younger I had a bullet proof 94 Geo Tracker and that thing was a blast on trails. After that I had a basically stock 92 Jimmy that was beast. But there's something about the looks of an old Discovery that gets me. And everything I've seen about their off-road capabilities puts a smile on my face. Plus it doesn't seem like they need a whole lot to be capable of most anything thrown at them. I've seen many that have been basically stock, all the way up to everything that's modifiable, has been done to the extreme. Plus, I've taken care of everything I've ever owned religiously. And have always done the work myself. So that's not a big deal to me. And the most I would do is tires, lift, and bumpers for a better approach and departure. And a few other minor extras that don't really affect its off-roading ability. That seems like all that is really necessary to make these super solid on trails.
@pearsth6 жыл бұрын
Justin Taylor You sound like the perfect Rover owner. Discoweb.org has a good forum for supporting these and debating what mods to put on. Not to mention a decent classified section for used vehicles. It comes with a lot of attitude but the info is good.

@billv36936 жыл бұрын
You actually need to stay more to the right on this trail. Let your tires crawl up the wall and avoid that crevice. The line to the left away from the wall looks better but that is how drivers get stuck.
