Nice one THOR! Loved what you did with the bolts. They are fasteners after all!

This video has been particularly helpful to me. I’m in the middle of refurbishing my spring and just about to make some new spring retainers. Thanks for the tips. I chamfered the ends of the leaves so aid them sliding on the leaf under. I’m using black zinc paint on them and plan to use graphite grease in between the leafs to hopefully give it a more subtle ride off road. Thank you for all your very informative videos.

I have worked In my uncle's Garage where we would refuse the spring much like what you have done but we had the rivets I do like that you used the bolts great job mate. It was quite common for leafs to break up here in the Highlands when pulling trailer and ending up at funny angels.👍 Nice hammer action

When I refurbed my 109s springs I too used counter sunk headed bolts but I used nyloc nuts, never gave a thought to riveting them. They've been on there for eleven years now with no issues. I also lubed the leaves using motorcycle chain wax before re-assembly, ideal for the job as being waxy it doesn't displace easily. I wish I'd wrapped the springs to keep the muck out before re-fitting, definitely will if there's a next time.

Hi just wondering where you live. I'm Te Kowhai Hamilton. I have the same interests as you. Rebuilt a Series 1 and currently doing a mk3 mini. Also starting an enclosed motorcycle/camper trailer. Regards Campbell

Question unrelated to this particular video. In one of your previous videos on EPS boards for offroad trailers you commented that the 2" thick aluminum-clad panels were ill-suited to temperatures below freezing. I was curious if this comment was for a unit that had some other kind of powered heat, or if you only meant a unit whose heat would come from body-heat from those occupying it. I'm mulling constructing some kind of cabover side-in camper for a pickup truck using similar techniques on an American Nissan D40 Frontier, which was sold as the D40 Navara until 2015, and my total payload capacity is low enough that using thicker panels may not be practical. Thinner panels may be necessary in order to keep the weight down.

There is very little difference in weight- the best option is to use polyurethane core - the brown one, Much better insulation and even stronger.

I have heard & watched an article on springs i am sure it was said that leafs should be uncoated between their packs as they will last longer.Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Kevin I watched several videos and spoke to the two guys at Archer's Springs. One thing seems to be clear. Don't wrap them- cos if moisture gets in it cant get out. and as for painting them- Archers paint them and all new springs that Ive ever bought for trailers have been painted. all trucks and vans have painted springs from new. 4WD boys like to oil their leaves cos they work well but wear quicker as its like a grinding paste. The paint I use is called gilsonite. its like tar, but sets harder. My other two Landys have gilsonite on the springs and so does my boat trailer. not a sign of rust on any of them. I guess that if you belly out in sand you will start to get sand between the leaves to some extent- Im still learning

In the UK, the spring makers only paint new leaf springs once they are fully assembled, bolted together. Because the paint in between layres wears away, displacement of paint material between the leaves causes the leaf pack to become loose, not good! But thanks for an entertaining video sir, and I’m sure it’s nothing that removal and some attention from your hammer and a tighten wouldn’t sort out.
