I show you step by step how I strip down two springs for a 1985 Ford F150 pickup. Clean up the springs, replace the bushings, re-arch the leaves and get them ready for installation.

Great video. If you need a spring center bolt in a pinch you can make one with a regular bolt. I may do this on mine.

Nice. Cracking and popping sounds when you turn is a good sign of a worn bushing.

Love the video but, could you please can the music. I'd rather hear you talk or the machinery operate than constantly have to adjust my volume and skip back to hear what you say. Thanks for making and uploading these videos.

Are bushings hard to replace on these Ford springs, or expensive? It seems to me if I had a set of springs in your shop I'd want all new bushings - especially if I had the springs off the truck.

Bushings can range from about $8 each all the way up to $65 each depending on the year make and model. Sometimes it is worth it, we just access each vehicle when it comes in. There are about 200 different bushings so we dont stock anywhere near all of them.

@@simcoespring Aha! makes sense. Do you recommend the poly 2 piece bushings as a replacement?

The music would best be played in private. Or make two videos, one on shop work and one for the music you like.

You guys do great work, but damn that's a lot of work to refurbish a leaf spring that's readily available new.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Жыл бұрын
yes, a refurbish like this is less than 1/2 the cost of a new spring. not everyone can afford all new all the time, so we do a ton of rebuilding.

@@simcoespring those spring must be quite a bit more expensive in Canada than in the US. There is a bit of a lead time 3-5 days, but I can have those for about 300 a side new from one of my supplier here in the US.

@@chris6200 I was thinking the exact same thing. Just looked up on Rock Auto and a brand new set of average aftermarket springs with bushings is $322 delivered in 2 days. I can't imagine paying shop labor rates to reuse some crusty tired 25+ year old springs to /maybe/ get new bushings.

I was always curious, when you rear Ark springs do they not lose their strength and tension? Thank you.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 2 жыл бұрын
it is actually quite the opposite. when we re-arch a spring we are trying to make the spring stronger. most leaf springs loose their strength over the years so when we re-arch them we are trying to make them all work together again and for them to be as close to original strength that we can do while using used material.

Today I was scraping and sanding the eyes of my f250 springs There was a little rust ....I was concerned about rust and tolerences.Saw this and I was laughin. My Mickey Mouse calibers said the bushing is 1.63 inches and the eye was 1.6 Is that ok? I like your way better.....
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 3 жыл бұрын
All the bushings in all springs have roughly 1/32, 30 thou or .75mm of tolerance around the bolt you need a little wiggle room....once you tighten the bolts properly the sleeve will be "locked" into position and just let the rubber flex...its actually better to tighten the bolts a little tighter than looser....that inner sleeve on the bushing will not bend or get crushed. Whatever they make that sleeve out of is really strong, you can't drill even it. When you are putting new bushings in you need about the same 1/32, 30 thou or .75mm of a smaller diameter in the eye to "hold" onto the bushing when you push them in. The eyes are flexible and will be able to expand to let the bushing in....and hold them in place. You can either press them in or if you have an anvil, you can smack them in with a big flat faced hammer.

like your videos , BUT , this is ridiculous to do that amount of labor on some springs from a 1/2 ton truck !!!! you could of sold him a brand new set with urethane bushings & hardware & he would of had a superior product when installed !!!! THIS IS A CLASSIC CASE OF THE CUSTOMER BEING A " CHEAP SKATE " & " CHASING A NICKEL AROUND THE ROOM " ALL DAY !!!! " PENNYWISE & DOLLAR FOOLISH " FOR SURE !!!!! those spring kits are cheap !!! BUT , I DO LIKE YOUR VIDEOS , BEEN IN THE HEAVY TRUCK REPAIR 45 YEARS , LIKE TO SEE TRICKS OTHER GUYS GOT , ALWAYS CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW !!
