Great advice using heat sinks. I like using music speaker magnets repurposed for welding magnets. Have many for holding and if cooked it's ok they were free

Heavy copper sheet is vastly better as a welding heat sink. Eastwood sells a good copper heat sink, with magnets built in so that it can hold itself in place (safe with heat). Also, fish oil has a fairly limited life inside vehicle bodies. The best anti-rust treatment is a slurry of 1/3 fish oil, 1/3 Teroson cavity wax (the heavy liquid, not the spray can) and 1/3 spraying thinners. You can blow it everywhere with a proper long air wand, or simply use an engine cleaning gun. This slurry is initially very liquid and creeps in everywhere, then dries to a waxy, self-healing coating that lasts a decade or more, although I always redo sensitive areas such as doors every five years of so. CRC rust converter is an expensive way to treat light rust. Corroless is better and far cheaper and can be sprayed or brushed over light rust then topcoated later. About $130 for four litres. Keep up the good work :)

Thankyou for all that info Clive. problem is - I live in a town with 1 hardware outlet.and we use what we can get. All these brand names are interesting.Eastwoods is new to me Ill get back into their website and have a good look around. Protective Paints- Coroless - I used years ago on some agricultural implements and was most impressed. I will check out their primers. You comments have been so helpful

Great video, I’ve tried doing that spot welding like you were doing to keep it cool and on mine I blew holes in it. Of course my wire welder is a cheap one. I need to get my Lincoln wire welder fixed up to my welding machine. Can’t wait to see the V-8 truck going. I’d love to have something like that to tinker with once I get done fixing my 4 tractors, tree shaker, both my CanAm Commanders and especially my John Deere 450E long track dozer ( my secret stress reliever)

I have used vinger to clean up old nuts and bolts found it work's well also use duck oil. I use quite a lot of copper slip as well it's great stuff. I have to have the sills welded up in my MG ZR. The foot wells on the bulk head seam to most common place for the Land Rover series for roting. I see you are still having problems with your Audio. Where I am in the Highlands rust kills everything. Anyway mate hope your well. The rust converter we use that over here to works really well if your working outside.👍

reasonably grunty - 200 amp so i can weld trailer drawbars safely - but certainly not industrial- just a serious hobby level unit. here is a link to it= www.machineryhouse.co.nz/W1102

@t.h.o.r.
@t.h.o.r. 3 жыл бұрын
Seldom. because im welding outside so often and because Im also welding lots of galvanised steel - I use flux cored wire. I get a great price on it too. gas shield is nice for production work but it keeps getting more and more expensive! Oh and it fits and sparts on anything thats not perfectly clean

That foot well, why not just weld in a thicker piece of metal and avoid having the possible wicking if water to be trapped there? IE. if the inside section and out side section are 1mil thick weld in a 2 mil piece of steel? Cheers.

What welder would you suggest a DIYer should get for home manufacturing etc? Thanks
@t.h.o.r.
@t.h.o.r. 3 жыл бұрын
I use a Migtronic 200 - nothing flash- but 200amps will weld 10mm steel safely for drawbars on trailers It can also be turned right down to weld 0.5mm sheet steel. I use Flux Cored wire to keep it more potable and because sheilding gas is easily blown away when working outside. The result is horrible porosity. try to avoid those 3 in one machines Tig/Mig/Arc. Its better to get them seperately for longevity

@@t.h.o.r. But that's not your model. Otherwise, it looks like it was moving, if I'm correct you were tightening it up. Looking at your fan suggests to me it normally spins clockwise so the nut has to go clockwise to loosen, (anti-clockwise to tighten) otherwise if the nut was anti-clockwise to loosen it would undo itself when the engine is running.

For a home resto on a budget I would get a 140 amp mig and run flux cored wire. ensure it has rotary dials for amps and wire speed- not 3 position switches. Make sure the wire feed assembly is steel not plastic. and buy a mid price range auto darkening helmet
