It's so unsatisfying when you go for the last little fine tune flare, only to find that it plants the main gear firmly down instead of buttering it on 😅

I wonder how many planes land here in the span of 2 minutes. I live a few blocks away and I look up and count and count so many planes in a 5 minute span . I know some are heading to Newark but the teterboro ones are way closer

When these planes land to the southwest, the planes drop their gear way out as they circle from the east - must be an arrival. Can someone tell me why these small biz jets drop their gear so early - maybe 10-15 miles out.
@Sixtyten60102 жыл бұрын
No expert but I think it depends on if they have speed brakes/speed flaps or not. The gear adds drag to help slow the planes down to approach speed. Oh and it could be the configuration of the planes landing lights if they are located on the gear struts or not. I don't know its its required or just good practice but most aircraft turn on landing lights under 10,000 feet.
@njrailfanner452 жыл бұрын
I live right under the approach for 19 and the they lower the gear just as soon as they pass my town, which is exactly 5 miles out from Teterboro. They rarely ever do it earlier.
@HH-mw4sq Жыл бұрын
As a pilot, we lower the gear once we intercept the glide-slope for the ILS, because in case the gear is not working properly, it gives us time to go through the checklist to manually lower the gear while still on the approach. So, 10 - 15 miles out, or 4 - 6 minutes out, is a comfortable amount of time to troubleshoot the reason we don't get "three greens", and prepare to abandon the approach and fly the missed approach if we can't solve the problem within that time.

It would be nice to be able to fly without having to talk to or listen to all that air traffic control babble. They talk too fast and the pilot has to have good memory to remember what they just heard. Perhaps computer only air traffic control is the solution. The approach and landing instructions can show up on the pilot's heads up display or a audio warning to veer off and try again in an emergency. The same can apply for taxi and take off.
